  • “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones
    Producer: Jimmy Miller
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyricists: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Madeline Bell, Rocky Dijon, Al Kooper, The London Bach Choir, Jimmy Miller, Jack Nitzsche, Doris Troy, and Nanette Newman
    Lyrics:
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was a foot-loose man
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
    You get what you need
    Oh, yeah
And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singin’ “We’re gonna vent our frustration
    If we don’t, we’re gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse
    Sing it to me now
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
    You get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
    To get your prescription filled
I was standin’ in line with Mr. Jimmy
A-man, did he look pretty ill
    We decided that we would have a soda;
    My favorite flavor, cherry red,
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me,
    And that was “dead.”
    I said to him
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
    You get what you need
I was her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands.
    Say it!
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you just might find,
    You get what you need

…, but if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need.
Big difference between wants and needs. Knowing the difference is the key.
This is one of the all time greatest rock and roll songs. IMHO

I'm actually here to get the link and send it to her since she is now an adult and id love for her to listen to the entire song. 😆 hopefully I didn't traumatize her too much with it. I didnt expect to see other parents or even children of parents that did this when I came here. Its wild. I'm glad you were able to listen now and have a positive memory of your father. Take care

I’m here at 2:15pm and this song just hit me during the hardest times. My father just passed away due to the coronavirus. As he was fighting for his life for 2 weeks straight and a bunch of prayers. He passed away without having to say one last word to his kids. This song hits because you can’t always get what you want in life, but if you try and keep moving forward you can find light at the end of the tunnel..

My wife and I put our 2 1/2 year old twin girls down for a nap a few months ago. One refused to sleep, so I brought her downstairs. She loves music, so I asked our music device to play classic rock. My daughter started playing in a little tent castle my wife set up for her in our living room. We have been taking her to a speech therapist for some months because she has been having difficulty verbalizing like our other twin daughter. So there I was, sitting on the couch thinking, and worrying, and worrying about my daughter - and wishing she would verbalize more. At that moment, the Rolling Stones song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” started playing. My daughter poked her head out of the tent, and she just looked at me … and she smiled. And I realize, she is just perfect the way she is, and she will learn to speak more in her own time. I am so lucky to have my children. “You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need, ah yeah.” So true. Count your blessings.

@mikebrown1485 --- that's a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing that. I am a retired preschool teacher, and your daughter will eventually verbalize when she reaches that developmental stage, or I should say her stage of development, in her time....I used to sing this song to my preschool class whenever they were fighting over not getting exactly what they wanted when they wanted it, and in just a few months, my entire class knew the words. In November one year, at parent teacher conferences, one of my parents said his son was singing it at home by himself and he laughed and asked him where he learned it, and his son said ms. mckinnie taught it to me and he said he started cracking up laughing.... Music makes a huge difference in everyone's lives and it's a great way to teach kids patterns and also math, as music is essentially mathematical in structure and design... Take care 🌹✨💜

My boy was a late talker. He vocabulary was less than a 1/3 of his age group. His speech therapist told me 3 yrs was the magic number. “When he wants to start, the floodgates will open.” Three yrs and 4 weeks later, the floodgates opened and 17 yrs later, I’d be okay with a little silence 😉. Good things come to those who patiently wait. She’s going to thrive with the love you obviously provide. ❤

For some inexplicable reason, this song ALWAYS reminds me of an elusive girlfriend from decades past. I met Mary back in the early 90s while living just outside Washington DC. We were both young, up-and-coming professionals of promise in our respective fields. Mary was a lithesome, brilliant, free-lance journalist with contributions in US News & World Report and other highly-regarded, syndicated print publications. Winsome, slender, perceptive, and with legs up to her neck and piercing blue-eyes that perceived much and missed little, Mary was the kind of woman all men sought, as did I. But Mary had another agenda, one that didn't include love, marriage and all the things that modern women (as they always have) considered impediments to a successful career. Mary rejected my romantic overtures, but was tactful enough to do so in such a way as to remain a close friend and confident. I didn't mind since I knew the sea was full of fish, and female companionship, so I was content to be her back-up when she needed a date somewhere with someone who wouldn't try get into her shorts at the end of the evening. Together we had many splendid outings, from parties at Embassy's and the World Bank to steeple chases in the Virginia country side. Indeed, even when I attend those events now, I still half expect to see her there, with her long blonde hair flowing, glittering in the iridescent sun, surrounded by admirers. And I have to say, in that capacity as a friend, we had tremendous fun. No relationship complications, no fights, we were pretty much like brother and sister (in fact, we both introduced the other to people as just that). In the end, I finally met the woman of my dreams, to whom I've been married for some 23 years now. But I still hold dear those memories of Mary, of what was and what might have been. There's not a street corner or sidewalk in Georgetown or Old Town, Alexandria that doesn't evoke memories of our time together. Sadly, Mary passed away a few years back of cancer. It came as a shock as I had spoken to her only a couple weeks before her passing and she sounded as strong and vibrant as ever. The funny thing is, after her passing, one of her friends confided that Mary had always adored me. I miss her every day, or perhaps it was the magic of our youth that I miss now and of lives free from consequences, but at any rate, Mary was the one thing in life that I wanted but couldn't get, but in exchange, I got what I needed. Thanks, Mary...and now through the past, darkly, she comes. :-)

That was wonderful to read. I never read loooong comments, but I remained riveted to this one to the end. It's a bittersweet ending . I felt like I was listening to a close friend tell me the story. You must be a writer too ?

Brian Jones's contributions to the band's sound were dwindling away by this time. Years of undeserved Establishment persecution had ground this sensitive man into the dirt. Paradoxically, this grim period found the Stones at their sonic and lyrical peak, as in this epic masterpiece.

Rolling Stones started their career singing "You can make it if you try" and, decades later, I see them singing "You can't always get what you want". That's life.

This was the favorite song of someone really close to me that passed on recently. He was like a second father to me. He used to have this song play on his answering machine back in the day. We hadn't spoke in long time. He overdosed and the people he was with dumped him out the car in a parking lot and never called for help. Wish he could've gotten clean
