Stay safe and let's ride out the coronavirus lockdown together! 👍🏻
Wingin’ It! Paul Lucas the made you pause when boarding got me damit
Stay Safe Paul! We can't live without your videos.
As A Canberra resident, I can vouch the city has come much more "alive" in the last 10 years - our aiport in the early 2000s was basically a small county airport that could have doubled as a farm. We were considered "International" cause we had 1 flight a week to Fiji haha!
And now you even have a sia capital express flight from Singapore to Wellington.
@@tally1604 No they don't that stopped operating even pre COVID and replaced it with a SIN-SYD-CBR-SIN triangle route.
And commenced serving WLG via MEL with a A359
@@nickroberts3658 thanks. That's too bad. I flew both to Canberra and Wellington from Singapore on that flight. Loved the convenience.
@@nickroberts3658 do you know why SIA put the kibosh on it?
2:04 there are actually 3 lounges in the QF lounge complex at CBR ;) Chairmans Lounge, Business Lounge and Qantas Club
Love the fact you talk about the destination aswell as show what's onboard and do the trip report. Really sets your videos apart. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Hope we're all in the sky soon enough 👍
Going to Adelaide? Somebody is going to see Dennis.
Cheers, here’s to a great flight!
how are you flying its all lockdown
@@kingsweden4636 dude. did u fell asleep during the first 5 sec of the video? its a backlog of videos he is uploading

Ah Paul, it's the day after Boxing Day and I'm binge watching your trip to Australia! I was lucky enough to go last year too - in August / September; I went via Singapore with SQ and then my travels around Australia took me on Qantas Link and Virgin Australia - all but the Qantas link were in Business Class - it was an outstanding trip and watching your videos is almost like going all over again. I really want to do the Nullabor so another trip, when the world is safe enough, is definitely on the cards. Love the channel - keep going!
Love your unbiased reviews Paul.
In answer to your query of flight numbers matching aircraft types, used to be that often QF767 from Brisbane to Perth direct (a 5+ hour slog which departs around 1930hrs) was operated by the old 767-300 buses before QF pensioned them off... flew on them a few times myself. Probably half of the time now (before the COVID impact!!) it's an A330-200 or A330-300. The other half of the time QF767 is operated by a 737-800. That' a tough slog in an 738 for 5+ hours at the end of the day - complete with the 2 hour time zone change from QLD to WA!
I really like your reports than sam chui, ur ones are close to reality and you mention about food which every also look for. Thank you🥰
Totally different types of content :)
in Ottawa the area code is 613, so we have occasionally done flight 613 on aircraft 613 (737-600) from the 613 (it leaves at 1850) the flight goes to Calgary.
We took a flight from Miami to Seattle, and the flight number was 305 (which is the area code for Miami).
Brings back memories flying out of Canberra then mentioning Indian Pacific at end. Did both in the late 70’s.
Canberra designed by Walter Burley Griffin...brilliant architect born in the USA...hence the lake in Canberra is named after him !! So sad re Virgin Australia with debts approaching 7 billion Australian dollars. They may return as a purely domestic airline and get rid of the small fleet of A 330 and B 777 aircraft....but who knows what will happen...not to mention my Platinum FF status and a lot of FF Points in the bank !! Although our population is around 26 million we need 2 airlines in such a vast island continent !! FYI re Adelaide...Adelaide is a planned city, designed by the first Surveyor-General of South Australia, Colonel William Light. 2 planned cities in one day !! Great video and flight Paul and hope you are safe and well during these awful times !!
Saw Colin Hay live, he told the story about how he and his parents moved to Melbourne by ship. They left Scotland on a horribly cold and foggy/rainy day... and then several weeks later the ship pulled into a horribly cold and foggy/rainy Melbourne... “Did we go halfway and then turn ‘round?”
My two home towns! I live in Canberra but was born and bred in Adelaide! Cheers for the video! You'd be surprised too how green Canberra is now after months of rain...
Qantas Airlines is good as gold. My first flight I did with them is flying over Antarctica for the day from Brisbane, Gold Cost, Australia and back. Outstanding service and love doing business with them the most when I am flying into and around Australia.
We did 4 internal Australian flights with Qantas, albeit at the front, back in January and February this year - cant fault the service and the crew - made to feel welcome and a valued customer. Hope we cant get back there sometime in the not too distant future.
Paul, how far in advance did you book? I live in Australia and have not paid 400 one way in Qantas economy. Whilst QF tends to be pricier than VA and flying from CBR is not the cheapest, I think 400 is a misrepresentation of what Australians pay in a full service carrier. I have flown to SYD for 220 return in QF and live in Melbourne in the past few months. Just to be fair.
I flew AF 332 in the days which use to be the flight number for the Paris to Boston flight operated around 2005 by an A330-200 :)
I really love Canberra Airport. Very modern, architecturally interesting, spacious, and clean. And almost always deserted. Gotta love having a terminal - and as stunning as this - all to yourself. Melbourne or Sydney on the other end of the flight, seem pedestrian in comparison.
Likewise, I love Wellington airport over the Tasman sea much better than the larger Auckland International. The runway views from the main concourse in Wellington are unbeatable.
I agree Canberra is a very interesting place. I spent several days there a couple of years ago. Managed to find an Airbnb in a good inner suburb location that was walkable to the museums and core. I took several Virgin Australia flights on that trip so it is sad what happened to them. I thought the fares were pretty cheap but maybe that was due to my long range planning or time of year.
Yes air travel is expensive in OZ. Was in Canberra a couple of times with the Rural Fire Service fighting fires south & west of the city. in December & February. Flew down with Alliance Airlines from northern NSW.
From one firefighter to another, thank you for your service sir 👍🇬🇧
Nice one Rex. The fires of 2019 were terrible - stay safe.
@@Paul_Lucas Thanks Paul, I forgot to say we flew down in in a Fokker 70 a rare treat indeed for an av geek.
The US declared independence in 1776 in Philadelphia. My United flight from Houston to Philadelphia was 1776. Also back during the Continental Airlines days, Houston to Honolulu was Continental Flight 1
The reason your flight was so dear is because nobody really flies to Canberra apart from diplomats etc, meaning flight prices are high. Also the new airport has an owner trying to get what they can from everyone. That means big fees that the general public end up having to pay for.
You could easily have flown Sydney to Adelaide for less than half what you paid. Or chosen as option to go via Melbourne.
Qantas also owns the main budget airline in Australia Jetstar, so they charge higher for the main product. But it’s always been a good product - I flew from Brisbane to Sydney on Qantas (80min flight) and got an absolutely delicious dinner.
Thank you for a great independent review of Qantas.
As others have said AUD 400 is expensive for this flight.
Looking forward to your review of the Indian Pacific. That's on my bucket list to do.
I was an au pair in Canberra until COVID sent me home in March. I’m glad that you went-it’s underrated and pretty nice.
Looking forward to your journey on the Indian Pacific. I always promised myself this trip when I lived in Australia but somehow never got around to it. Maybe one day. I'll wait and see how you got on. I think you'll agree that internal flying in Australia is vastly superior to the U.S. with their overcrowded and sometimes very poor airports.
I agree about Canberra, I was there in February. Everyone said 'Canberra, why are you going there?' But I really enjoyed it. Shame I couldn't continue my Aussie adventure, but always next year!
Melbournite here but I went to Uni in Canberra - nice quiet town but I can't think there is much to do unless you are a student or a politician. Interested you went there and then to Adelaide - another nice quiet city
4:40, I totally did this when flying with KLM beginning of March. Don't normally do it but realised I did because of your videos afterwards.
Qantas is my favourite airline to fly. Good food, friendly crew and an awesome safety record. Once I get on board I know I will be home safe & sound.
Very familiar with Adelaide airport. Grew up Aand lived in or near Adelaide a lot of my life
best thing you did getting out...its a hole
That disclaimer in the in-flight magazine was the result of the behavior of many Chinese tourists onboard Qantas flights. I think it's also specifically printed in Chinese too. As well as notices around major airports in Australia and Canada - in Chinese only - with a warning not to spit on the floor or garbage cans. Yup, you read it right. They have had to put up notices like all over the airports, and only in Chinese (not in English).
I got a chuckle from the 737 audio system still being in use on my last flight. I wonder if they ever bothered to upgrade the tapes since the plane was built.
Qantas was the first airline iv'e ever remember flying and it was amazing
$400 for a 90 minute flight? That's certainly not normal in Australia, yes its a little more expensive to fly here, but despite our 25 million population, we have 5 "main" Airlines that operate, including 2 LCC, 1 with a significant regional network, and 2 full service. To have paid $400 for that flight, it must have had something to do with the day, the time, or how close to flying it was booked. I know for a fact that MEL-SYD or SYD-ADL flights usually cost under $150AUD One Way, and these flights are of a similar duration and distance.
Yes, VA is in Voluntary Admin, however it appears currently that they might survive thanks to a SQ or MU buy out. VA is owned by HNA Group, SQ and EY as well as smaller investors.
Despite our small population, Australia has 3 of the top 50 busiest passenger air routes globally, with MEL-SYD being Number 3, carrying almost 10million pax per year.
$150 one way is still expensive. In Europe a flight with the same distance and flight time would usually cost under €50 one way
@@thwalesproductions Thats $85AUD one way, which is around what it costs to do that flight on a LCC. In Australia all Domestic flights with full service carriers offer food, full baggage allowance and a proper Business Class, as well as IFE too. Hence the higher prices. Get what you pay for.
In Europe an equivalent flight of 90 mins would typically be around €30-€60, unless it was a really obscure route
Canberra direct to Adelaide is hardly a trunk route, which might help explain the price.
Bryce Larson The reason for high fares is no low cost carriers can afford to land at Canberra airport. It is privately owned
Great video as usual.
Yes our Aussie airfares are expensive, part airport charges (which reflects monopoly privately owned airports) but I'd think $200-250 would be a normal advance fare on Qantas for this route.
Qantas has 75 737s delivered from 2002-2014. They all got updated in the last few years with an extra row of seating, new fabrics and inflight internet. About half have seatback IFE and the majority of those are Sky Interior, so you got an older version that had the BYO IFE added. The seatback IFE ones are more common on the Perth, NZ and Asian flights, but otherwise luck of the draw.
Agree Qantas's inflight internet is great being free and good speed. However it uses Australia's NBN service so only works over mainland Australia and not the water to NZ, Asia or even the flights over the Bite. Also 8 domestic focussed 332s have this internet
None of QFs international aircraft have Internet, they are waiting on the new ViaSat3 launches
Fab, keep them coming Paul, cheers us up in lockdown!!
I once took an American Airlines flight #1492 out of Columbus, Ohio.
Great video Paul, never had the same flight number as aircraft but did fly on Aer lingus A330 registered EI-LAX from Dub to LAX!!
This is my take on flying, and yes I have worked in the airline industry for 20 years:-
Sub 5 hour flight: - a seat, any seat, preferably an aisle. Leave me alone, buy on board if you want it, bring your own iPad / tablet / book for entertainment.
5 hour plus flight: - A seat that goes horizontal and I mean flat, not at some stupid 17.5 degree angle that most airlines consider a sleeper seat...... IFE bring your own .......and preferably a couple of Valiums!
A cup of coffee and a muffin 1 hour out from the destination as a wake up.
Prawn salads, eye fillet steak mains, desserts, cognacs and cheese-boards are just frivolous extras added by the airline at massive cost premiums.
Eat that stuff at your destination - I’m sure you can go without it for 12 hours on a smelly aluminium tube.
Hot tip :- Buy a couple of subways before you board.
Theres a few small charter guys who run tours up to the NT, mostly in Chieftains I think. That would be an interesting trip! See plenty of the small strips in the middle of AUS.
Great video and I am really looking forward to your review on the Indian Pacific!
Hi Paul, loved your take on us here in Oz ... but would you be offended if I pointed out that Melbourne, as we pronounce it, is more akin to "melben". I'd also point out that Canberra is one of the more expensive ports to fly in and out of, simply because the passenger numbers are comparatively low. Contrast that with a fare from Sydney to Adelaide, a greater distance, which would have been $219 one way. Although seeing the number of comments before me, someone else has probably already brought all this to your attention.
We enjoy your reviews and hope that COVID-19 won't be with us much longer, so you're free to travel again.
If you liked the Hudson Paul, the War Memorial has a Lancaster, Spitfire and a Mustang.
I believe I flew on either United or Delta on flight 757. Turns out is was operated by a 737
Many years back we would do a full service in ECY - now, with years of cost cutting you are lucky to get anything .
Glad to see your Qantas Domestic flight was a lot cleaner than my a330 from MEL to SYD. Great service though!
My last flight on QF was from OOL to SYD on a QF 737
just before lockdown . I was most disappointed by the dirty interior that obviously hadn’t been cleaned between flights and the indifference of the cabin staff to offer hand sanitiser although it was clearly on board . Not impressed ! .
Thank you for visiting Canberra, I love watching your videos and I'm so glad you visited my home city.
Qantas has always been known to be expensive, but the great professionalism and welcoming as always 👌
What does "administration" mean? Any update on the video about the different classes and tearms of classes for usa, asia and europe?
Shame you didn't get a 737 with IFE. Those are quite often used on the Canberra - Adelaide route from personal experience.
If we loose Virgin {which looks likely, if no one buys it } then expect the flight prices to sky rocket. I remember flying Gold Coast to Sydney in the 90's and the prices were ludicrous, $300 round trip, not sure I can do an equivalent to today's prices.
I also like Canberra one of few Australians I guess.
Paul great work and thanks for keeping us nostalgic for the good old days!
We regularly fly on the Qantas 737’s en route over to New Zealand, however there are some clear differences between the domestic and international 737 flights... the international 737 flights feature a proper IFE screen, no onboard WiFi, and you would be served a much more substantial meal! Interesting to see the difference! 🤔
Almost. I had an Emirates flight with the flight number EK381 (HKG - DXB), which was operated on an A380.
Nice tripreport btw! Qantas (and Air NZ) is/are my favorite airline(s) of all the airlines I have ever flown on. I especially enjoyed my Qantaslink-flights on the quite rare 717s! Also I wish European carriers would do such an awesome onboard service on short haul flights as Qantas does!
Funnily I really hated Jetstar though, which is the low-cost subsidiary of Qantas... the worst legroom ever, not even European LCCs would dare that.
(Edit:)
I also flew the route from Melbourne (MEL) to Uluru (AYQ) and landing at this airport in the middle of the red desert next to this huge rock is just stunning and spectacular, highly recommended! (Even if that would mean to fly Jetstar lol)
Hi Paul,
I always like your reviews as you always seem to be willing to show and explain the full range of variables from the, not so good through to excellent. There appears to be an underlying honesty in your approach. I appreciate that in a world where deception can often be a part of many things on the net.
At last Qantas has become a part of your wonderful work. Not surprisingly, Qantas is my favourite airline. Although I travel on many others, none surpass Qantas on the most crucial aspect of flying, safety.
I had hoped that you would finally make it here one day. You are right about Canberra and I am not anti our capital. The city is often underrated and this is a shame. No I don't live in Canberra but I have been there over 100 times, possibly a good deal more.
My only minor criticism relates to your reference to "a small agricultural aircraft". This is in fact a water bombing aircraft and these aircraft and others similar are the backbone of aerial fire fighting resources in many parts of Australia.
I look forward to many more of your reviews both airline and rail. So keep up the great work.
Thanks for showing us a flying review I cant travel anywhere because of the lockdown
Welcome to Adelaide Paul!!
And yes, Canberra is a little sterile. It's got nice museums though.
Sehr cooler Vlog, eine absolut coole Maschine.
War der Tunnel, durch den du in CDG zum Terminal gegangen
bist, unterirdisch?
Wow! As everyone said that's heaps of money. I can fly ADL-MEL for no more than 200 return with Qantas. That's insane pricing!
9:50 i think is paul's Qatar a350 1000
It was nice to have a little escapism through your eyes. What are your travel ambitions after this crisis is over? Much love to you, from just down the road in Reading.
Thanks for another great video Paul. It's a shame about VA but they're not dead in the water just yet. Fingers crossed they secure a buyer as hoped, or $400 from CBR-ADL will seem like a bargain once there is no competition for QF. I hope you enjoyed your trip 'down under' and cannot wait to see more videos from you about this part of the world. Keep up the great content!
I would love to see you do the canadian whenever this whole lockdown thing ends
I live in Leighton Buzzard! Didn’t realise you were so local, Paul!
Kieran Carvell I grew up in Leighton Buzzard! I went to Southcott Lower and Linslade Middle Schools before going to Aylesbury Grammar School when I was about 12.
Wingin’ It! Paul Lucas, that’s amazing, can’t believe that! I live really near to Southcott, my little brother went there! Myself, went to Greenleas, Leighton Middle and Cedars where I’ve just finished! I run the media at our local football club, Leighton Town as well!
hello, in all your air travels have you ever taken a picture with the hostesses / stewards or pilots?
As an Aussie looking forward to more of your Australian trip!
Your last 2 videos the music has been too loud over your voiceovers- never had that problem with your videos before
Hope your back on the road ASAP!
I flew on KLM flight 757, though it obviously was not operated by a 757 as KLM has never had them in their fleet and AMS-PTY is a bit of a stretch range-wise
Of all the people that do these travel vids you by far are my favorite! You’re real! I don’t want to put anyone down but Sam Chui and Jen Brooks are complete phonies! Keep up the good work!
Thank you, Paul. I enjoy your comments and video of your trips.
I've flown on BE787. Unfortunately it was a Dash 8 Q400!
$400? I think it’s cuz you booked during the Christmas period, this flight is usually $270 but sometimes it can be as low as $170
Great Vids Paul, i actually loved Canberra was there twice really nice city!
Paul we have been following you for many years now, love what your doing your a natural. :)
Please do a flight review of a QantasLink Boeing 717 - I am a crew member onboard them and would love to know what you think! Awesome video!
Great vlog as always! That price was stiff! Looking forward to the next! Be safe , and stay safe!
canberra is an expensive place to fly
Nice to see a Jetstream flying.
Pity you didn’t have time to visit the War Memorial. You would have really liked it. Also don’t believe the stereotype comments about Canberra. I lived there for 16 years and loved it. Great vid as usual. You are so right about the cost of flying in Oz. Imagine what it’ll be like if Virgin goes under. Qantas CEO, Alan Joyce, will be praying no one buys them so he can gouge Australians even more. I always fly Virgin btw.
great video as always mate ,looking forward to seeing the train journey as well ,that price though is disgusting!! a mr O Leary or some other LC needs to be started
I took delta 757 by to sfo or the other way around can’t remember and it was on a Boeing 757
I flew on SQ380 from Singapore to London
Nicely done video. Canberra looks like an interesting place. Thanks for sharing!
Love your channel and videos! Also an aviation & travel geek...& also tour capitals! Love Parliament House (old & new) & Canberra. Interesting city!
once I went on google and searched " ANA 787" and I wanted to find info about the aircraft but the first thing it gave me: a flight tracker of flight 787 operated by ANA
As a Perth boy I'm looking forward to your Indian Pacific train trip.
How have you found cheaper prices using a VPN? I've tried with flights setting the VPN from various different countries and the price is the same.
Didn't work for me either. I tried Surfshark once because of one of these discount offers and it didn't do anything for me. I ended up canceling it.
Interesting and somewhat historical, a meal and wifi wow! We flew Sydney to Perth business class on 737. We were slugged $5,187 for 2 business class seats one way. Just before boarding (lounge closed) we were told no wifi, no entertainment and no meals. With exception one female attendant staff were appalling. Long boring flight in a bus
Am I the only one who hate the window seat and would sooner have the aisle seat
No, the aisle seat is by far the best when you're in economy. I'll take a pod any day though haha
Sad to see Virgin Australia following the recent announcement.
Thanks for posting this Paul. A bright spot during an English lock down day. 🙈Great video.
Please give me the link of Indian Pacific rail journey.
Absolutely awesome video Paul! I would love to fly Qantas sometime! I really hope you got to go to Brisbane, Queensland while you were there!😸😸
any trips with aeroflot in the catalog?
Memories... I remember Canberra well... !
Omg I live in Ampthill not far from MiltonKeynes 😲
out of curiosity do you need to fill out a form to state you have no malicious intent or do a lot of airlines and other companies generally dont care if you decide to record?
They don’t care.
You were lucky , at least you got a pie and rice for your $400 . The last time I flew QF from SYD to ADL all I got was a small piece of cake and a cuppa for my $400 .
I cannot wait for the train video man
I want to cross the US (my home nation)
Europe
Japan
Australia
and Canada
by train before I die.
Flew QF 738 to Sydney and I was on a 737-800
Because of quarantine I’m spotting from home and luckily I live on an approach path for BNE
