I stopped using a ranging potion with the atlatl because it doesnt affect max hits, but then it felt really inaccurate. Does a range potion increase range accuracy?

Thats what I was thinking as well
Max hit is based of strenght bonus, its still a ranged weapon so ur accuracy does matter, using ranging pot does work. @@MDGScape
