      Earthbending style that all Earthbenders from Avatar use is based on Hung Gar Kung Fu (style with a lot of "tiger and crane stuff") but Toph's specific style of Earthending is based on Southern Praying Mantis (this is official info, not a theory).
      Here a video of this art, look how the posture, footwork and arms movements are almost equal to those of Toph:

      i really believe that you should look else where for self defense, this style is alot of counterattacks that require you to parry and block attacks at the same time allowing you grab their arm. Not claiming that none would work. only that they would be situational. this style has no protection in clinch or on floor. this wouldn't work in a street fight. most definingly a beginner in the style. maybe if you study the art for years and use others style. look up something else kid

    It’s so difficult finding information on Praying Mantis KungFu so thank you so much for this. First demo was a head scratcher, second was so much better. Could see where the strike had room for power vs just a tag; the arm wasn’t absorbing half the strike, he had room to extend into the target etc. The hook brings up so many questions. I don’t want to dismiss it offhand as ineffective but redirecting that much power into a counter strike seems to involve so much potentially self damaging contact considering how short and explosive hooks are. Redirecting vs avoiding just seems soooo risky. Wish dude could explain more but again I appreciate the content, thank you!

      What's the point if you will still get your ass whooped in a fight? This is highly ineffective. No one on earth has ever just thrown a straight right and at half speed where they pause with the arm extended for about 2 minutes. Get an amateur boxing champion from Spain in this video and let's see how you effectively block a jab, cross and left hook when it actually comes from a boxer with the intent to hurt. And forget about MMA in this. His stances are beautiful for single leg takedowns into full mount and then elbows raining down on your nose.

    • @tonypeterson5316
      @tonypeterson5316 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @P M B No, what u r saying isn't right. If u r fighting in MMA of course then u r not going to get inside the cage with just one style. You are comparing someone with just one style of Kung Fu/martial art going up against someone with Muay Thai & BJJ. But if a well trained Praying Mantis or Wing Chun fighter learns BJJ, he or she could also compete well in MMA as well.
      In fact, quite a lot of pro MMA fighters have learned and used Taekwondo moves as well. Read this:
      medium.com/martial-arts-unleashed/top-11-best-taekwondo-fighters-in-mma-ufc-history-c61c4640e421
      It's usually the fighter's own fault for not executing the moves well enough, not because the techniques don't work.
      I don't see why Tony Ferguson, Anderson Silva and other pro MMA fighters would learn the techniques of Wing Chun if they didn't work at all..
      If u fight inside the cage with only BJJ or boxing and nothing else, u wouldn't get too far either!
      So generally speaking, it's best to learn a couple styles and train as hard as u can. Techniques and power/speed all matter the same!

      @tonypeterson5316 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @P M B What they teach u is TECHNIQUES, to become a really good fighter all depends on how hard u train and how smart u are. Btw, Jiu Jitsu is a martial art as well, and almost all pro MMA fighters have to learn it. Keep saying everything is useless will just make u more useless.

    • @tonypeterson5316
      @tonypeterson5316 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @P M B How about BJJ and wrestling? They only teach u grappling, no kicking and punching! Boxing only teaches u punching, no kicking, elbowing, kneeing, grappling, etc. That's why MMA exists today! I made it clear already, Taekwondo and other martial arts are more about self defense so they only teach u techniques, not training u to become a full contact fighter! Watch this video: th-cam.com/video/majFwZuxBLM/w-d-xo.html

  • @PatrickAnthonyPontillo3rivers
    @PatrickAnthonyPontillo3rivers 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    By the way, "modern" Aikido IS a variation of praying mantis kung fu. So too is Jeet Kune Do, in its trapping & its Pendulum Kick. Everything developed by man is a gradual progression from something prior.
    One step further: 1) Kung Fu becomes fine-tuned when you instintively know when to apply pressure and relieve pressure. Praying mantis kung fu, in addition to being mindful of finding your center, is a circular motion art. The essence is knowing at what point in your circular motion to jet the pressure outward ... in either a block, a strike, or in a quick reflex motion of closing the distance, so as to not get knocked out with a kick or effective punch.
    You need extra stretching exercises if you follow this form. This form is perfect for gymnasts needing to (or wanting to) learn self-defense.

    And once again. ...
    kung-fu Choy Lee Fat was the only kung-fu style ever defeating the Muy Thai in their own country Thailand. ... the Choy Lee Fat fighter fought 6 times that day , because the Muy Thai didn't wanted to accept defeat saying that it was luck, but with luck or skill Choy Lee Fat wan 3 fights non stop .... but they didn't care honor was on the line so they made the Choy lee Fat fighter fight 3 more times , the Chinese fought 6 times non stop that day and won them all .... this is the truth that every one can easily verify ...

      @@joshuaphillips4680 of course I agree with you on this ( it's the man that makes the art and not the other way around )
      But those facts that I described that happened in Thailand between Choy Lee Fat kung-fu and Muy Boran (the ancient Muy Thai )
      This really was art against art , like in the 1st UFC, that it was also art Vs art , because both fighters were only trained in their own arts , so it's was art vs art ...
      Now to be man Vs man like you said and ( I agree with you my friend ) it's different than the old days because my friend when both fighters only know their art and nothing about the opponent's art , in these cases it's always art vs art and not man vs man or training vs training , both man have to trust their own art or style of fighting different of the other guy ... now this was how they did it in the ancient times. ..
      Today it's different, today it's like you said my friend , is man vs man , even the ufc changed the rules and the safety precautions that helped this changing of art vs art like the (old vale tudo ) , like the UFC 1,2,3,4 and 5 after that everything changed, it's was no more art against art because it wasn't financially lucrative, because once the strongest art reveal it self , the challenge the possibility of winning ended. .. we saw that in those early UFC fights when kick boxing , karate , Taekwondo, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and other arts like boxing etc cane to fight one on one and when they saw the superiority of jiu-jitsu and jiu-jitsu got the super art status all that ended there because everyone knew already before the fight starts that jiu-jitsu would win the fight and the bets started to lose interest and the money start to be short , less and less so what they did ??
      They start the model of man vs man ....
      How how they did it ???
      It's easy by changing the rules in the old days you only needed to know or art and that's it, so it was really art vs art , nowadays it's not possible anymore because in the Mma today you have disciplines that makes the foundation of MMA. You can be a master in whatever art you do but to do MMA you have to practice the foundations of MMA to be equal more less with your opponent , so you have to train the foundations like boxing, kick boxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and by doing this all fighters know something that the opponent is gonna know also , and with this model were all fighters have the sane base , they toke the advantage of an art being superior to another ... understand my friend ????
      When both fighters have more less the same knowledge of fighting it's not gonna by art Vs art but man vs man instead and in this model ,yes the training and how you train and strategies are very important and that's what makes the difference today in being the winner or the loser ... they toke the advantages of the strongest arts and make all fighters train the sane disciplines, you can see that with lyoto machita the karate guy , today he is an expert in jiu-jitsu also and wrestling and boxing , a karate guy , doing all this ...
      In the same way you see wrestlers doing jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and boxing , like woody the champion, you also see great professionals in jiu-jitsu learning boxing and kickboxing and even wrestling to gain some advantages by training hard ....
      So the man Vs man its a modern concept, and in the ancient times it was really art vs art. ...
      Ok my friend , thank you for your answer and your points of view. ..

    Bruce Lee said that for fighting street fighting the Choy Lee Fat was the best and the stronger , Bruce Lee even said that until today Choy Lee Fat was the only kung-fu style ever betting a Thai expert in Muy Thai. ..
    This is a story told by Bruce Lee and other experts many times about the old challenges between styles and Muy Thai had defeated every kung-fu style the Chinese sended to fight them once a year while they were in China and this went on for many years the Muy Thai used to make this challenges , all martial arts did back than ...
    So it's cames the time that it was the Chinese turne to challenge the Muy Thai art , and they wanted to fight but in Thailand this time and it was like always they used to do the fighters had 3 fights to do and they must win at least 2 of them to be winners so they pick up the Muy Thai fighter and the Chinese sended their Choy Lee Fat fighter to Thailand and they Choy Lee Fat fighter win all 3 fights, something that never had happened and not convinced that the style was superior to Muy Thai the Chinese Choy leet Fat had to fight 3 more fights that day , and he wan them all the Choy Lee Fat defeated all the rounds and the Chinese recoverd the honor back ...
    This really happened not because Bruce Lee , but because I found that same story in many documents and from different sources (masters) not all from kung-fu. ... this is a well known story

Remember this ??? They used to invade each other's acadamies and Dojos, art against art those who had more wins it declare that his art was superior ...do you remember this ??? I do ...
      So in the old days the superior art should prove it self by letting their fighters fight and if the lower ranks beat the best fighters of the other art it would be consider superior. ..
      And this it was they way they did it .. Japan challenge Korean arts for many years during the invasion .. Thailand also did the sane thing and China as well ...

      This is not difficult to see let's remember the old days in the ufc and you would see that concept being used when Bjj with the Gracies and other Bjj experts wan over all the other arts by simply doing the grappling that no one did back then , only wrestlers and Bjj used to dominated every other guy because of that they did what others didn't know nothing about and pay off , today it's different because everyone is doing the same more less so with this cross training every one it's equal in knowledge so in this concept of course it's fighter against fighter because they no the same things only strategy and cardio will make the difference to win because they all train in the same way ....
      And even by doing that my friend things are changing and in a bit would be no longer fighter against fighter , but camp vs camp , tea. Vs team , who train beat , who as the best strategists, who as more champions. .. so you see that the concepts are always changing to fit somebody agenda .....
      But I ear you my friend I understand what you are saying ...
      Be well ...

      Please cite the story because I know you can’t. Bruce never said that. Wing Chun was the enemy of Choy La Fut. they had roof top matches in Hong Kong. Bruce knew that Wing Chun was superior.

      @@trustedfox exactly. .. in those times Bruce Lee was a pioneer when he understood that wing Chung didn't had all the answers for street fighting and that's what started the Bruce Lee's process of creating concepts of fighting taken from different arts like Ju-jutsu, boxing , savate, and more ...
      Taken what fits you and live the rest because what's good for you may not serve for me and vice versa ... one can train Jeet kune do all we wants that is not gonna make him Bruce Lee not even close because I think that that was made exactly for him they way he move they way he understood things and trained no one does that not like him so the results can't be the same ...
      Take what's serves you well and move to another. ...
      He Bruce Lee was a visionary it's to bad that he didn't see this mma boom, I would love to see how Bruce Lee would deal with the grappling arts .... I think that he would have learn them and incorporate them and move on ..
      Bruce Lee was untouchable he understood all aspects of the fight ..

    Even if the people fighting are fictional, some of these techniques would not work!
    I don't see Wildcat (from DC) doing a punch from that range on an opponent!

    It is very interesting for me to watch this video. I practice wing chun and it is very interesting to see wushu videos about the animal styles of kung fu and see the little parts, strikes, positions that wing chun took it from. The first block and punch of the mantis style in this video is called pak sao in wing chun.

    I got to the third technique before I started laughing my ass off, you want to cross parry a haymaker, rotate the arm and strike the liver with the same hand before a jab or a hook takes your head clean off … yeah … never going to happen, have any of these fools spent a day in a boxing ring before?

      The key is to move fast enough to take the opponent can counter also boxing and martial arts are two separate forms of fighting

      MouseTrap95 uhhhh.... IF you are faster than your opponent.
      He is absolutely correct. That technique takes WAY to long
      You are aware king fu/gung fu are....get this.... Chinese Boxing?
      Basic boxing technique is the literally the base of pretty much every martial art which incorporates striking, ever, across the planet
      It is literally the first martial art

      The idea is to rotate the arm to the inside quick enough to impede the attacker from throwing the left hand punch. Although I would probably forego the arm rotation after the cross block and got straight to the elbow strike

    Monkey footwork looks like it incorporates FaJin in the first move, the 3rd and 4th techniques looks extremely similar to FMA/ Kali, awesome to see where many arts overlap and interconnect with each other
