I’ve studied northern style tong long chuan for a little bit. The sifu definitely shows a beautiful , powerful art that many need to see. Praying mantis gung fu is rare and to those of the mma community take heed!!! I give you total props 👍💪
Interesting demonstration of the implementation of some of the techniques from Bung Bo (I am sure my spelling is drastically off). Stylistically, the way Lia Sifu taught Bong Choi (the back fist) a little differently. Instead of it being a small action it was a larger action that would include the whole body weight so that it would strike like an "avalanche". He also taught us to have the arm relaxed so that if our strike was blocked we could immediately turn it into an elbow strike.
The difference between the back fist you described and the one done in this video is what I would describe as "a variation in the generation of power". Same technique, slightly different application of power. Neither is incorrect. I like both, and would keep each one in my arsenal. I learned the "Lai" method as you described. Such is the case (in my experience) with MANY of the techniques in Praying Mantis. Just learned another way of doing the "Upward Elbow Strike" (Tag) "Sideways Elbow Strike" (Lean) from end of the 2nd road of Bung Bo (sic=spelling is correct). Anyway, variations in the "Application of Power" and variations in the "Application of Technique". Sometimes you think of a variation, try to make it work, but it's junk... Some people like the way a technique flows so much, they'll try to "force" it to work. I've been guilty of this myself from time to time. I try to catch these times and say to myself "just let this one go". Many times, it isn't until years have passed that I won't let go of a variation of a technique that I like. Sometimes, I like the way the variation is done in the form. However, the application as "seen" in the form isn't as effective or efficient as if you adjust the technique movement slightly when applying the technique. The Praying Mantis form "Bung Bo" is absolutely FLOODED with RICH variations of the techniques it contains. Liver punches, Groin upper-cuts, hair pulling, face "mushing" (what we called it when I was a kid. It's a distraction technique). It contains the technique that Michael Jai White (a well-known celebrity Martial Artist) was discussing with the late Kimbo Slice (RIP) about moving in on your opponent in a way that makes it hard for your opponent to detect and react against. I recommend watching this video. That move he is discussing is the 4th move in the first road of Bung Bo. I've seen Floyd Patterson effectively use the Praying Mantis 8 Rigid methods "Left and Right Roundhouse Punches". Floyd, however, is using "Hook" punches. Still, when he is doing his thing, it fits right into "Left and Right Roundhouse punches" of the 8 Rigid methods of Praying Mantis. I think I've said enough of nothing... There is a lot of material within this video clipping. Thank you for posting this excellent video!
Mantis is not something you can copy and apply. You will get your butt kicked if you don't get at least 3 years training. But it is a beautiful style for dedicated students.
Same applies to all arts, does it not? That's why I dislike "self defense" classes. You're better off buying a punching bag and practicing a jab/cross over and over again. I would hope most people study an art for the sake of the art and let the fighting chips fall where they may
I'm amazed that there's quite a few similarities to Ark Wong's Five Family Fist Kung Fu, it's awesome. Also, haters like to brag but then Muay Thai fighters get destroyed every time by Sanshou fighters, lol
yeah...sorry guys ...here's my opinion 7 start mantis, muay thai...they're ...fun. eagle claw...it was pretty...monkey, 4 gates, tiger, crane, mantis...they were fun to learn, got my body nice a nimble and i developed some great balance...i took all that, dissected all the thousands of years of techniques, and kept what worked...then i added more. Martial arts = arts of war. so you know, added in anatomy and botany. meridian lines and poisons the biting of throats, slicing ears off with a hand. removing eyes from the skull. splitting the nose with two fingers and ripping the face. breaking the spine, breaking kneecaps, elbows, clavicles. windpipe crushing, metacarpal crushing, snapping the ulna and radial in half, fracturing skulls and shoulder blades. ripping toes out of socket and finger and toe nails out.... stopping the heart, stopping the liver, shutting down the kidneys.... striking an artery in a way that creates a thrombosis and causes internal bleeding in the heart once it travels busting aortas, or an aneurysm in the brain. permanently maiming or crippling an opponent for life if they live. THE only problem I've found so far is a lack of sparring partners >->;;; THIS ^ this is a martial art... when your kicks and punches are aimed at areas that END LIVES. this is what a LOT of people train in....how the hell could a practitioner of something like this step into a ring at 100% without the opponent agreeing to and signing a death waiver? who the hell wants to experience something like this?! schools like the white lotus for example practice horrid techniques. there are techniques you practice on the carcass of animals so you FEEL the bones break, you FEEL the eye come out or you feel the throat be crushed and you TEST your finger strength to MAKE DAMN sure that windpipes coming with your hand when you pull it back. the real honest to god martial arts are formidable, terrifying, cruel and beautiful. The good and bad news is...most of you will never see it.
@Michael Jones For delusions of grandeur it would be far more effective to use the fact you claim to teach tutorials in a university. This shows not only Delusions of Grandeur but also detachment from reality.
I think Muay Thai should be learnt first. Kung fu can be learnt later to complete the arsenal with its evasive chain combo moves and strikes and kicks.
There's a Kung Fu art that Muay Boran was possibly a descendant from.Cant get to the name I think it's called Ang Quan or Zhuan Quan.Have a look at it.Theres a lot of moves there that you would find in Muay Boran as well.
In that case, the enemy can win. That's the problem with most instructors and most martial arts... They only focus on the hands and totally forget the feet.
I've been doing seven star and little red boxing in a real fight and combined it, you have to mix other forms or other arts together to make it work like Bruce said
I swear the individuals who developed these styles never experienced any violent confrontation in their lives. Trying to block and capture strikes with extended arms in an attempt to counter DOES NOT WORK. And ironically, some of these moves would work when trying to create an opening for a strike by pulling someone's guard down or pinning the arms when pressing the attack.
The individuals who developed this particular style were definitely not as delusional, but fast forward to the Hongkong lineage…. All that’s left is garbage
Actually, tang lang chuan was created from the fact that wang lang (the creator) could not defeat the abbot at the shaolin temple. After making tang lang chuan he could defeat the abbot and all the other warrior monks at the temple with ease.
It works very well against those who punch, then leave their arm out, while dropping the other arm low and just stands there with no further movement. This comes from a group of kung-fu systems that teach the gentle boutique styles that are not to be used against a real attacker. These students are more interested in having tea and socializing.
Have to love it when someone can't even take the time to come up with their own critique of a martial art style. The fact that you had to steal your comment from someone else tells me that you have no clue about this and don't know what our talking about.
@@eyeswideopen2536 too many people confuse the demonstration of a technique with how it would look at full speed in a real fight. Generally people who have a set opinion are the ones who are the quickest to criticize. I am not going to work to convince you of the virtues of Praying Mantis, but having seeing it done at speed by proficient practitioners (e.g., Sifu Brenden Lai) I feel it is safe to say it is a highly effective martial arts style. But again, I know I am not going to convince anyone in the TH-cam versus.
Well Muay Thai in a ring with rules is great but you can't really use lots of the Chinese technique in the ring due to the fact that they don' abide by the rules of the ring. Trying to adapt it to the ring has proven to be difficult probably because it was ment for survival and ring fighting.
thanks for sharing techniques that are very important for a fight survival

Such a nice music
I see some serious simliarities to Wing Chun, in this Mantis
Style.
Are there any basic form in tang lang chuan that summarizes the 12 key word formula (the 12 basic techniques)??
Great art work ,,thanks for the vid...

i happened 2 find this under the search tag, " northern praying mantis". presume they're not related 🤔
This is seven star praying mantis kung fu, or tang lang chuan in chinese.
Secret=basic stuff
This is a very orm of kung fu.
Is the video for sale?
quite possibly as he does a book series as well.

Sounds like the real deal. I've read about training with animal carcass but can't find much on it online. Local kung fu is pretty watered down
counter action.
