  • A Conversation With Buckethead
If you're at all into the guitar (or were a Guns N' Roses fan), then chances are you know who Buckethead is. And if you've never heard of him, prepare to meet one of the most talented, generous, and soulful human beings around. In this episode of Coming Alive, Barry talks to Buckethead (whose real name is Brian Carroll), about his Part X, his recent struggles with back pain, how he's comping with the death of both his parents, and his life's dream to build an amusement park. They also talk about the creative process and the genesis of Brian's Buckethead persona.

Funny part of this interview is Brian wondering if the people at his shows are into it. Having seen Buckethead play live I can tell you that I wonder the same thing. I wanted to dance at his show, but felt held back by same anxiety and fear that he talks about in the interview. I should have not worried about what others thought and just danced. Anyway... Brian, if you read this, thank U very much for your music. The pike series is fantastic. If you are ever worried that people at shows are not into what you are doing at the time (audience reaction), forget about it and chalk it up to everyone being totally blown away and in awe of what U can do with a guitar. I myself have had tears of joy streaming down my face listening to your music. We (all of your fans) love U very much.

I'm in the same boat... My folks passed really close to one another, my Mom died in September, and blew us kids away, and Dad too. We didn't realize that Dad wasn't taking his Diabetes meds as he should, and we didn't realize it, six months later I got a call at work, Dad's in a diabetic coma and didn't pull through... And can hear the same pain in Brian's voice to talk about his parents that I have, it's debilitating. I'm so glad he's come out the other side, his music is essential. I haven't come out of the other side, and can no longer achieve the same highs in life, and Brian has hurdled this Iwo Jima and for that I appreciate him even more. His music I love, I find it inspiring, and powerful. It helps, and having listened to Brian, it helps him too.

@@DavidJohnson-rd5wy oh man...my dad, so he retires from his real job at 65, but still worked doing a paper route w my stepmom, then he and I did it together for 2 yrs, anyway, he FINALLY gets to REALLY retire in Dec of 17, at 78 yrs old. After a lifetime of working, he'd been working in the fields with his family at ten yrs old. Literally a life of nothing but work. Anyway. . A month later we learn he's riddled w cancer and dies on Feb 8th of 18. Blows me away how the man had to be in an misery inducing pain but worked till he literally couldn't. But point being, relating it to your post, it has me so messed up still with irrational fears of death and knowing how painful that was & it's just gonna continue happening, my mom's old, my stepdad is old, my dog's dying now etc, etc. If my mom had died that close in time period to him....it'd not be good. See irrational. I'm a heroin addict in recovery and I made it thru him dying without him seeing me fall back into the shit of that world, as he'd seen me do over and over. I just don't know how you could manage too get through that. Best wishes, man

I only found Bucket Head three days ago. I am so grateful to hear him. I don't have problems with what others think about me and I never knew what power that gives me. We can only be who we are and it matters not what others think what matters is putting yourself out there and accepting not everyone will like you but to know that you dont have to maintain an unrealistic image of someone we are not. This honesty is confrontational to most but I don't care and finally only folk who you are at ease with are the only ones around you. Mr Bucket Head you strike me as sincere and honest and please don't feel unworthy as you are what everyone should aspire to...thank you for being you ..you can be proud of yourself and know you parents must have been very proud of you...you are a living legend. When each day starts know you only need to play the cards you hold at the start of the day and at the end of the day just take time to count your blessings. Play what you want that's all that matters now.

SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE HERE see themselves in concert with BucketHead’s struggles and efforts regardless….
We really need heroes and examples; this real person is very evidently that individual for tens of thousands!!
Now people, GO FORTH in whatever areas you may try, regardless of tears and falls, successes and notoriety!! GO FORTH and create something for all of us to see, hear, feel and also be awed and inspired by!!
    YOU TOO CAN DO THIS!!!!
I’m sure that BucketHead would agree that YOU ARE WORTHY!!!

I have listened to BH since the early to mid 90's and saw him live several times when I lived in Cal. I know he is 48 y/o but he still sounds younger here like a young man. I know at the time he put the bucket and mask on probably as a buffer to allow him to play in front of a live crowd. I suffered in a similar manner when I started to gig in bars and clubs in the 80,s to the present althouigh not as severe as Brian had, and this is BRian talking not Bucket in this interview. I am not trying to analyze him just trying to understand him. He seems to be a true soul, a humble man with a savant like ability to play, compose, and innovate on the instruments he has mastered. I hope he can overcome his health issues, as he truly is a once in a generation performer, musician, and innovator. Long live the Bucket and Brian Carroll

I'm spending the time in the next few months/weeks to write this interview down and transcript it for myself (and for anyone that wants it) because I feel like it is important to me. I really connect with many of the things talked about by Brian and Barry, especially the fear of doing things and putting too much value in people's responses towards me and my music. Thanks so much Brian for reaching out, we all benefit from sharing experiences with each other. Thanks Barry too, for producing such a great podcast.

Things like these are why I have this theory that human beings were not made to live in such big communities close to each other, we are more like loner cat-like creatures who appear from time to time but we only thrive in solitude. And you definitely wanna check out the video talking about the experiment with mice showing the terrible effects of uncontrolled rise in population and the effects of living in permanent surveillance, despite access to infinite free resources.

This man is a diamond, not in the rough, but finely sculpted by the events of his life...and the phenomenal job his parents quite obviously did raising him. Some who commented here mocked Buckethead; belittled him, and questioned his development. Let me say this, genius often flies in the face of convention, and, by any measure...this man is a genius. In addition, JUST HOW MUCH BETTER OFF would the world be with 1,000,000 more Bucketheads walking around? I couldn't care less how he arrived at his approach to conversation, to his art, to his life. If Buckethead's "development" has been stunted, then give me stunted, humble, and soulful any day, vs. "enlightened," egotistical, and crude! Thank you Buckethead, for simply existing...a ray of light in a world of storm clouds; and thank you Dr. Michels for all you have done for Buckethead...and for bringing this interview to life.

I saw him last night (4/23/18) at Jergel's in PA and was struck by how much humanity he brought to the show, despite the disambiguation. Along with the raw emotion of his playing, he interacted with the audience, letting kids in attendance play his guitar, passing out toys to them, and wearing the KFC buckets they were wearing. A true class act; you're awesome Brian Carrol.

Incredible. It's really great to see (hear) him out of character. I love this man and his music. He's my Michael Jordan on the guitar. When he talks about Paul Gilbert it's almost as if he doesn't realize his own greatness. All that he's been through lately might just make him even more amazing because when I hear him play from the heart it blows my mind how he's able to convey his emotions through his guitar. Songs like The Patrolman and Sail on Soothsayer are just emotional roller-coasters. There is still so much musical genius inside waiting to be unleashed... These are all amazing changes he's going through and I'm thankful he chose to share some of his life stories and struggles with us fans. Thank you Brian!

Driving in my car on my way home from work tonight I wanted to listen to music so I went to Pandora to Eric Johnson radio and this song came on that made my ears perk up. I looked to see who it was. Buckethead. Who? What an odd name. Then I checked the song A Long Day’s Walk (hmmm I like that) from a record called Sparks In The Dark (sounds good too) so I’m liking what I’m hearing, turn it up loud and OMG!!! I’m loving it! Saying to myself “How the hell haven’t I heard of this before?!” I’m moving around in my seat, moving my hands to the music, tapping my hands and fingers on my steering wheel, in joy thinking wow this is so beautiful and incredible. After it’s done I go to TH-cam and search for more songs. Pick one and see the guy. Strange, with a KFC bucket on his head, long hair which I’ve always loved on guys, and his fingers moving so fast. Damn he’s so freaking good! After that I pick another. I want more and more. Get home, go to the Town Pump to get gas with it playing, looking at people outside looking at me strangely and I realize it’s so loud they can hear it even though my windows are rolled up. I don’t care but I do turn it down a notch. Next I go to the PO to get my mail and just sit in my car searching for info on this guy. I read something about demonic or satanic and it really bums me out, being a believer in God the Father, Jesus, His Son and the Holy Spirit. I start thinking about his music and wonder and hmmm maybe he is a satanist. Do not want it to be true. I check out more songs, all so good. Thinking if he is a satanist I can no longer listen to it. Then later I find this and listen to him talking. Love his voice! Sounds young. He does not at all seem like he’s into Satan. I wish he’d show his face and not hide behind a mask. I see he has sooooo many songs. I want and will listen to them all! I’m a 65 year old woman and his music really moves me, touches my soul. Shared it with my brother via phone message on the way home. Want to share with everyone!
