This is a lot of effort just to reply to a comment on my last afford-a-board video, but it's totally worth it because it gave me an opportunity to compare two versions of a classic fuzz that I've been curious about for a long time. HUGE THANKS TO SWEETWATER for making this video possible by providing the JHS Supreme.

Please do a video exploring more of the Avalanche Run. I think there are some sounds on there (especially using an expression pedal) that you would have a lot of fun with. Also, in tails mode it can act as a microlooper that degrades like tape and gets really lo-fi. I love mine.

One would argue the the Behringer is a little bit more behaved thus being more appropriate in a band setting. The Supreme is an identical clone of the Super Fuzz, it sounds like doom and the end of the world which is tricky to add a band mix.

Both pedals sound great, and they both do something the other can’t. The low gain scuzzy 2d sound of the behringer is really something, super aggressive. That ticks more boxes for me personally, but I love the supreme too and would say yes, it is the one I’d recommend to others who want to get into this style of fuzz.

Bought the Behringer last year for $19.99 on a Sweatwater special deal. I rehoused it in an aluminum enclosure, and I mean completely desoldered the switches, pots, led, jacks... and brought everything "off board". I turned the cheap slider switch into 3 indepenent mini toggle switches, so you can actually select any or all of the modes all at once (fuzz 1, fuzz 2, and Boost). It now is such a cool looking, mega fuzz monster... and competely road worthy. But... seriously what a total PITA of a project! I have been making and modding guitars and pedals for over 20 years, so I know what I am doing, but wow, I am not doing that again! haha. Glad I did it... but just the once!

Sneaky secret setting on the Behringer SF300, good shout Ryan letting people know about it. You can’t fault the Behringer SF300 for the low price of above £20 in the UK, I know it’s plastic and a lot of people will turn there noses up at it because of it, for that price it’s a decent sounding fuzz tone, and if you get one just take a bit of extra care with it and it’ll be ok.

I have a lot of pedals and, as you know, usually, you get what you pay for. I'm a amp-in-the-box / preamp overdrive guy. I have a lot of them.
My most expensive ones - the ThorpyFX Scarlet Tunic (Selmer TNB50) and the Aclam Dr. Robert (Vox UL730) - sound amazing.
My reasonably priced ones, Catalinbread 5F6, 55, Nocturne Brain Jr. Barnyard, BearfootFX Gee Wilikers etc. sound great. My cheapest, the Mosky 250, FLAMMA Preamp, Donner Dumbal Drive - these cost next to nothing and are all very, very usable. Their biggest issues are stability and construction, not sound.
That's my feeling on these - they both sound very good. If you're a guitarist on a budget (or just touring - unless you have a heavy foot, drunk stage divers), there is no huge loss in getting yourself the Behringer. It will get the job done. If you can do the 170usd (less used) for the JHS Supreme and are doing a lot of recording - obviously do that.

I find this comparison to be a bit strange, these are very different circuits, the Univox Superfuzz being the original circuit was an octave fuzz with 2 voicing types, 1 being the pedal's naturally produced voicing and the second a mid scooped voicing (both with octave up). the SF300 is a clone of the boss FZ2, the boss FZ2 was inspired by the univox but was given significant changes that made sound quite different and added a mode that took advantage of the circuit's input stage as a boost and also adding active EQ and employed opamps to create the fuzz gain.

You aren't comparing either to a real Univox Super Fuzz. I owned one many years ago and the tone switch made the guitar sound like breaking glass. Your Behringer is almost always set up a bit quieter than the JHS. A Univox only had two settings and no tone controls. It was much sharper and had more high treble than you are set up with either pedal. I like them both, but the JHS costs about 6 times what the Behringer and doesn't sound twice as good. Not exactly affordaboard material. Sorry, but my money is on the low status Behringer here.

It's almost comical, the first time you hit the setting switch on the original Superfuzz circuit between the midrangey setting and ultra scooped. I've built one myself. Probably sounds near identical to a real one. I happened to even have the transistors Univox liked to use back then, 2sc828, though mine may have been slightly higher gain (likely not much of an audible difference). The scooped setting is insanity, no doubt. The switch simply skips the voltage divider, which brings up the volume before the EQ circuit scoops it like crazy, so the settings are somewhat the same volume, otherwise the midrange setting would be something like twice as loud as the scooped setting.

The behringer is a clone of the boss FZ-2 which borrows a bit of its circuit (mostly the octave fuzz part) from the super fuzz. The high and low controls are a similar circuit to the boss GE-7 graphic EQ actually, but just two bands instead of 7.

  • @4034miguel
    @4034miguel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I am a bit confused: based on a very good list of Behringer pedals, the SF300 is a clone of the BOSS FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz. Does this mean that the FZ-2 is also a clone of the Univox Super Fuzz? I though there is a lot of differences between the Univox and the BOSS pedals. It is a pity the FZ-2 was not available for comparison.

Well :) I did not think you were the stoner doom metal type lol NExt time were are going to see you play Wlectric Wizard on the channel :P The Behringer is like the Boss FZ-2 , it is more hifi sounding that the superfuzz , which is better in a band setting. The Superfuzz will get drowned out quite fast, just like a big muff

I remember when around 2010 I went to the biggest guitar shop in PL, I asked about SF300, they checked in the system they have it somewhere... 15min later I was diving head first into a insanely big box of Behringer effects, like a particularly high inflatable pool really, in search of SF300 along one of the workers. He was repeatedly asking if it has to be SF300, and I said it has to :P I've had several Behringers since, and a lot of other effects since, both budget and pricey ones, and I say SF300 along VD400 Vintage Delay (analog on BBD chips!) are 2 essential Behringers everyone should have!

Ryan I was wondering what kind of power supply you're using for your pedals. I bought three Behringer pedals from Sweetwater and they didn't work with my power supplies. The tech at Sweetwater got me a Behringer wall wart for the pedals but it's difficult to run them on my pedal board without a power block that's compatible. Which kind do you use sir any info is greatly appreciated.

I use only fuzz for my dirty tones (because fuzz is fun) and out of my four fuzzes - JHS 3, JRR Ram Triangle Big Muff, MAS Effect Tiny Fuzz, Behringer Superfuzz - the Behringer is by far the heaviest and meanest. If I want to pretend to play metal, I use the Behringer.

The price of behringer pedals are so low that for the price of one "brand name" pedal you can buy 2-4 behringers. I'd love to see a comparison of (for example) behringer eq+fuzz+octaver vs jhs fuzz

I own the FZ-2, SF300, and have also built the boost mode of the FZ-2 in opamp and discrete amplifying format. SF300 is basically a FZ-2 work alike. SF300's front end is BJT's and opamps, cheap SMD variants in my 300. My FZ-2 offers discrete amplifying as seen on the front end of the BD-2, etc which utilize JFETS. Most of the rest of the SF300 circuit mirrors the FZ-2 with cheaper SMD alternatives. Most of the differences in the FZ-2 vs SF300 are at the input and amplifying stages. The noise floor on my Boss is much lower as well, as the Boss is over engineered, Low Impedance caps on the power rail help, as well as the low noise Toshiba JFETS of the Boss sure contribute, which the SF300 can't match.

For the Behringer SF300 you need to select and configure the amplifier correctly. With your setup, all the pedals sound rich and have a punchy bottom end. Plugging the Behringer SF300 into several amps I got a ton of highs, loss in the mix, and boomy lows. So it seemed to me that the Behringer SF300 is rather capricious in relation to the rest of the tract.
