Shame, Anxiety, and Fear: Why God Allows Hard Emotions

  • The other day I was wrestling with some hard emotions. In the description, I'll share a couple resources along with the Fr Mike video I refer to. Emotions are messages from God - don't ignore, argue with them, or reason with them. Just let them be. They can either be a source of grace or a very hard trial. It's up to us. The more we lean into acceptance, the less we see them as controlling our lives. And remember: emotions have a thought attached to them. So if we can find that thought and label it as "unhelpful" we're in the beginning of the journey already!

Since filming this, my good friend reached out to recommend a book that has really helped me with "sticky" thoughts (ie obsessive thoughts): Pure O OCD (a.co/d/03tGPuz). I shared both the OCD and the GAD (General Anxiety Disorder) titles in the description bc as Dr Chad explains, to him they're on a continuum. If you relate to this video, you may want to check out either title. I found even skipping ahead to the "solution" was so helpful and thankfully much of my work with @CoachCarolCatholic has aligned with his treatment plan: capturing thoughts, labeling, creating distance from thoughts, self-care.

I acknowledge the work you are doing to get free of sticky thoughts and to learn to take your thoughts captive... because feelings always come from thoughts. You're doing great! It's not about perfection at all (this side of heaven). TY for being vulnerable and sharing. Coach Carol

I used to suffer from panic attacks, but I've been getting better I don't get them as I used to get them.

Those are really hard. I've had those before. Now I can see how the thoughts can either lead to them (fear cycling over and over) or help resolve them (you're safe, this is just an intrusive thought, you are safe).
