Saying Goodbye, Starting Over, and Transitioning

- Change is always hard. Transitions in life are difficult. Goodbyes are never easy. Endings are rarely joyful. But today, Fr. Mike suggests that beginnings are even more crucial. He encourages us to take 3 steps whenever we start over, and to let each one of ourselves “be a beginner.”
Be patient with yourself.
Don’t freak out.
And be willing to ask for help.

Well shoot, you had to go and make me cry at the end, Father. My ex and I thought we were going to get married. However, he felt a strong call to the priesthood. We broke up a little over a month ago, and next week, he is leaving for seminary. Tomorrow will be the last time I see him one-on-one in person until maybe Easter. Saying goodbye is hard. But praying that we both remain strong. May the trials be purifying, not destructive. May we both be gentle with ourselves - we've left that home, and it's OK to still be a beginner after a month away from it. May the journey follow God's path, whatever it may be.

I don't believe God wants men to be alone. Sex is the greatest thing in life and these poor men who are told that they can't have it...and it's biologically needed for them...it's so sad. I just feel so bad for priests. They get screwed by religion.

SO HARD! I don't know what I'm doing!!! I lost Paul after 70 yrs of being together- 68 yrs married.
Not just difficult!! I am very old!! No choices. I try every single moment to give it to God. My priest said it was alright to be mad at God. I'm not. Just hurt and more than change and so much grief ! I invite God in. No words.
Sounded like I don't believe God can take this away- but I do not ever believe that. I wonder what God is wanting me to learn with this time of so much grief and change.

Be kind with yourself. I got rid of my habit by committing it to God every Lent for 3 years. After the 1st year, I thought , yay, back to my habit. But now, I'm like, no, no, not going there. Now I'm working on another habit that needs to go. Take care!!!!

I can definitely relate. My husband of 34 years died. So here I am now a widow living alone. I had to sell my house and downsize to a much smaller place, besides the overwhelming grief I was going through. Now, nearly a year and a half later, I have finally transitioned to a new life on my own. I still miss my husband every day, but thanks to prayers and support from family and friends and thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I am able to look forward to each new day. Patience is definitely the key. 🙏✝️🙏
I went to Mass today for the first time since I was 11, I answered Jesus' call a year ago and had to heal my PTSD with God before I was ready, but I loved it. I'm just a beginner again and it's uncomfortable but also exciting. My last evangelical church was home but not really for me. Needed to hear this today. I'm ready to come back to God's Church.
Recently, my spouse died, and I had to say goodbye to my old life and I am beginning a brand new personal life. My life is now lonely, painful, confusing, and my family and friends think it’s all kinda funny because I’m not supposed to need anyone anymore. It’s not funny or cute. I’m praying often, relying on God completely and surrendering my life.

I want to leave my hometown and toxic work environment, worked there for over 12 years, it's a bar where employees are barely sober, and I've decided to stop drinking. Been sober almost 1 month now! I know the move will be scary but I'm trusting Him completely with my home, finances.

As others have said, I needed to hear this. Leaving behind toxic people or things after more than 10 years can be hard bc it feels comfortably uncomfortable. But hold on, stay put, let go and let God...even if the answer is being alone. Alone is better than miserable.
This brings to mind the saying about if you are holding onto an object so tightly with your hand into a tight fist, no matter what, that hand can never freely give or take the next opportunity it has. Release your fingers.....Prayers. ❤

@Bi-polar Bear It is. Don't listen. I stayed way to close for too long to someone who is extremely toxic. I stayed longer bc I knew that I would be alone if I removed this person from my life. But during this "alone" time you can find yourself again. You may not be the same person, and have to confront that. You might have a lot of work to do to rebuild you, or just move on, but don't go back. I went back many times, and all it was was a waste of time, heart, and soul.

Retirement is another life event that is so challenging. Leaving friends, a scheduled routine, a job you believed in, duties and responsibilities -- and seeing your house duties in a new way 😱 aren't easy shifts! Learning how to allow yourself to be retired is so difficult and humbling, but it will happen!

I remember being so trapped and I said to God ok you win lead me and I will do what you want me to do and I have met a girl just recently and I took it as a sign that everything was going to be ok.and that this was just the starting point for me that I can be with somone who actually sees me for me and I just want to give a huge shoutout to fr.Mike for this because he once told me to let my anger go and let god take the wheel I am so happy its a miracle thank you Fr.Mike
I’m sure the apostles felt like this at Christ’s Ascension. Transitions are not fun and for some (e.g., autism, etc.) even the smallest of transitions are excruciating. That’s okay-everyone has their own coping mechanisms. Know that we are never alone. Christ prepared all transitions through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

So true about the apostles. This puts so much in perspective. For them to seemingly be letting go of something so great, and to face their challenges. it should be easier for me to let go of something destructive for me, even when it's family. Thank you for this comment.

When I resigned at the age of 59, it was deemed to a retirement since reaching retirement age was just a year away.
So I entered into retirement by default. At the sametime, my adult kids were starting to enter into marriage.
I decided to get a golden retriever as a theraphy dog.
But this was all in the past. True I was a begginer in this.
Now I feel I'm in my own skin. Thank God

Saying goodbye to my earthly father . He passed away july 17th. As a caregiver I miss him and our constant contact
When I find that I am struggling with how to best help my aging parents, to adjust to needing help for somethings they could manage previously. My husband was diagnosed with a rare syndrome which led to the discovery of a stage 1 pancreatic malignant tumor. He had to almost die to remind him about the precious nature of life. During the interminable wait for surgery to remove the mass (1 year) we lost a close family friend, a long time neighbor and shortly after the surgery my husband's aunt to cancer. Still he has held on to his rediscovered faith following all of this. He inspires me to strive to match him step for step as we face life's challenges together. God bless

I made a huge jump from being in the medical community as a Medical Speech-Language Pathologist & ICU Specialist. I Will keep all of my certifications, but CV19 took its toll on me in too many areas of my life, (as it has on many others) & I became extremely depressed, not sleeping and experiened anxiety that I have never ever felt.
So, with my spouse's encouragement, I left my profession of 26 years, to go work Part-time in a big box store, just to make me learn something new, have my brain literally take a break from keeping others alive during this exponentially difficult 3 yrs.
I've been there for 1 month & already received a raise @ 3 wks & was promoted as employee of the month - (which only having been there a month, it seems rather dubious IMO😆 😆).
I guess my point is, I'm not making a great income or have the best schedules, & I still make mistakes as to where everything is located. But, day by day, I'm feeling better physically, emotionally, mentally & spiritually. It's my goal to make all my check-out customers leave smiling & adequately served, but not b/c that's the goals of the store, per say, but with the premise that building relationships can happen in 30 seconds, or less. My employer gave me my "scores" on monthly % & ratios they track, and gave me a 100% & said they have received notes from customers. So, I don't say any of this to pat myself on the back, only that, it proves God is restoring me back to me, the person He created in His image, which, does NOT include the stressed out, anxiety ridden individual tasked with keeping ICU patients alive when there have been absolutely NO treatments available, my licenses under threat if I have differences in opinions, along with the ongoing threats of medical revocation/suspension/legal threats by administrators who DO NOT practice medicine and would not allow deliveries of several life saving drugs & equipment this entire time, even now, to arrive.
I understand not everyone can do what I just did and $$ is a real need for monthly bills. But, if you can find a side gig to do yourself, OR together with your spouse/roommate/friend, & learn something different than what your current job offers you, it seems many have eventually quit their "steady profession' & became their own boss. So, I'm also in the process of starting my own e-business & feeling a little more in control. Change is constant & can be good, bad, neutral, but is often & stressful. But transitions are usually contemplative and conscious, & not necessarily easy, either. But trusting God and Jesus, especially when God opens a door or a window, is crucial. I've even been able to have great interaction with our differently-abled boys and men (women/girls too, just not any at my location) that this Company hires specifically for integrating these precious ppl into our community. Most of them have Aspbergers & Autism, & Traumatic Brain Injuries - TBI, which happens to be an area of specialty. I also have had deep/ serious talks with a couple of men, who were honest when I asked them how their day was. Turns out in both cases, it was re: a family member being @ our local hospital, with red eyes b/c they'd been crying. They then proceeded to tell me their experience, & was amazed when I was able to speak to what the patient and family are going thru. Able to let them vent, b/c in these cases, I had no other person in line-it was a God thing. I just mostly listened, & they both thanked for "letting them vent". I gave them words of encouragement from God's Holy book and reassured them, that the projects they came into the store to buy the supplies for, were honoring their beloved or family member. Our Co. Also has a military discounts program, so I'm also able to genuinely thank Patriots all day long for their service. God's here, surrounding us in this realm. Don't be afraid to start anew & transition...
To everyone out these struggling with all or any of these issues, you CAN transition in a variety of ways by listening to God, & Jesus' Word. ❤

So it took a few years so I am looking for a job where I can offer my gifts in other ways

Daily in my DM Chaplet I pray a decade for all essential employees(that’s you🤗)across the globe, including the most vulnerable, most courageous, those helping others in natural disasters, those helping others in man made disasters (like Covid and wars) and those I’ve told I’d pray for. I pray for their protection, provision and continued conversion to know, love, and serve God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength forever. Then each bead I pray, for the sake of His sorrowful passion have mercy on all essential employees across the globe and on their families.

This is great. I transitioned from a relationship that I thought they were "the one" to not speaking to them for a few weeks now. However, I know that it is important like father said to 'be patient with myself' and trust the process of beginning a new stage of life. Thanks, father and Ascension :)
I'm still trying to reach the point of fully and totally letting go.... We work in the same building, now we sort of speak, we hung out recently, I know I shouldn't have, but they were insisting and k always liked his company, but I want to truly move on and let go and leave him in the life he chose. I want to let go entirely to see GOD'S Promises flow for me, but I want that full healing 1st, I need it.
I’m in the same spot right now too brother. Second year college student and last december marked the start of the first relationship I had ever been in and I truly did feel like they were the one. Only ended up lasting a month due to circumstances as well as other stuff, haven’t spoken to them since we stopped dating, and they are transferring out at the end of this semester, which is in a little over a week. It’s been a really difficult semester for me trying to figure out what to do with all these emotions left hanging, and it genuinely broke me. But I knew then that i needed to start moving on, and it’s been difficult with all the questions unanswered and the uncertainty of what’s next for me, but I know that God is leading me in the right direction. He’s used all of this to prepare me for what is next, and although I don’t know what “next” is going to be for me but i know that the grass is so much greener on the other side. I still need healing, there’s still this emptiness within me, but I know I’ll get through this.

Thank you father me and my girlfriend recently broke up. We had been together for almost 7 years at the least it's a goodbye for now and at the most its goodbye to that life with her. This is perfect timing. I’m a nurse and our entire hospital has a new charting system. It is so overwhelming not knowing what to do. Everyone is on edge and it’s total craziness… Trying to care for our patients is my priority but man oh man is is hard.

Thank you for this. I sold my house I've been living in for 12 years because I didn't use that much space and needed a change. I felt I was stagnant where I lived because it represented a bygone chapter of my college years. I am excited to move on, but it's been making me very anxious and I've questioned whether it was the right choice to make. Seeing people who are new is a frightening experience, I’ve had that feeling often since I graduated high school. The beginner’s jitters don’t go away even when you are in your 30’s.
Usually beginings are like a honey moon feeling of something new. For me it is more difficult after on the first year. It is no longer new and you're still learning.

Exactly a year ago this week, I transited into a new job. It was scary and not easy. I experienced so many doubts and wanted to quit so many times. But somehow by Grace, I stayed. It feels now that it was a stage of being patient with myself and the situation that helped me. Transition and change are never easy but prayer and working with Grace helped a lot.

This is so good. We’re military family so we’ve moved often. I gave up a job that I absolutely loved for the next assignment. We’ve had 8 churches in 18 years. I’ll tell you when you move that often you may feel a bit of detachment towards your next community, always the outsider looking in. I completely agree that the beginning is the hardest. It’s hard because you’re lonely and isolated. It’s hard because as a mom you tend to put the needs of your kids and family first. It is in those times that I try to give myself a little grace, I try to remember my foundation in Christ.
Laurianne, I totally can relate. We were in the military 26 years and raised 3 sons around the world and back again. Being new was our middle name. It is so lonely at first; took us about 7 months, at least to feel like we fit in. First thing was church or trying to find one. Sometimes we didn't even really make friends, just work acquaintances; we just traveled, went to church, work and school.
For someone like me who has difficulty accepting certain changes, especially when I would have to leave my comfort zone, this video was apt. God is so good! I just left a 6 year long cohabitation relationship with my fiance and have two little girls. After becoming Catholic last year my faith became so alive and important. I've been struggling with this decision even as a protestant, I finally stepped out with the strength of the Lord. This video came out at the perfect timing. I just almost three weeks ago finished high school, got accepted into the university, and I keep having these thoughts what if I made the wrong decision by choosing the university that I chose, what if I fail, not going to meet the expectations? And many other questions and doubts. Beginnings are always difficult, everything is new and unknown, and that can be discouraging. One thing through my short 19 years of life I've realized with Lord's help, that no one has it all figured out and it's okay to doubt your decisions but wrong to never try. Better to fail, make a mistake than to never try. It doesn't matter whether you think you have it all figured out, truth is, you haven't, and that is okay.

I know this about new job, etc…but it is relevant after the death of a spouse. I lost my husband in March and this is a whole new ‘job’ or chapter…if you will.
I'm sorry for your loss, Mary. I too lost my spouse in March, though not to death. It was however completely abrupt and unexpected, and now I struggle with how to live without the one I love. Again, my condolences. God bless
Yes losing a spouse is starting over. A very difficult adjustment. I am so very sorry for your loss. Some advice from a fellow widow. Absolutely do not make any decisions that are not absolutely necessary for 2 full years. I thought a year was enough. It is not. I have many regrets.

In my prayer group there are 3 widows pretty much in the same age group. We lean on and support each other. May God give you the grace and strength to accept His will and move forward🙏🏻

He was very generous. I’m being VERY careful 😌. We have two grown daughters who keep me in line! I pray that as time goes on we can all accept and heal and the good memories don’t hurt as much. Good timing, as usual.
At this time last year I said goodbye to my guy best friend, who I loved and who loved me, and we both wanted something more. But he wasn't a Catholic, and I saw he wasn't ready to be a father - so I said goodbye. I'm choosing to pursue my education right now instead of dating anyone, but it's hard when I'm reminded of him.
The beginning is definitely the hardest... especially when you can't see where it goes, and there are no promises, only a " Trust Me."

My computer went coo-coo. Thank you. I am one that focuses one thing at a time. I did the summer studies for citizenship; and then; did not have time to study; when apple season kicked in. but did 20 minutes; for a very hard test. Then, when I had the free week; I went at it full force.
When I broke my foot; it was hard core learning to walk again. I always have new ideas; and I brought these ideas to the therapist. she said: it is useless to try to fix collapsed arches; with learning to walk. but I did it!!! I can stand for hours doing preparations; while before: I had backaches and headaches. Now, I am finer than before; because: I took initiation. And as suggested by this TH-camr; I invested well for my well-being. YES!!!
