Helpful video Donny. I cobbled together a tool like yours and it worked fine. Thanks a heap.

Thanks for this information, I recently had to have my brake fixed on my 268
I had taken it apart and discovered that the small finger spring on top was broken so I decided to just reassemble it and take it to the dealer or order the part and repair it myself but for the life of me I could not get it back together so I put it all in a baggie and took it to the dealer. Now after watching you video, I realize I had no chance of reassemble without some sort of reset tool.
I was kinda hard on myself for a day or two knowing I had the mechanical ability to make such a repair but now, I know if I had the correct tool for the job it would have been a snap.
    Thanks again

Great video. Had been struggling to reassemble the chain brake on my Jonsered 2036. Didn’t know about the pre-setting before reattaching the handle. Having watched this video I went out to have another go. I discovered there is a way to do it without the special tool. Don’t install the main spring, pre-set, then attach the handle, then push the handle forward whilst pushing up the spring plunger, then insert the spring and put the cover on.

Great instructions for replacing this clutch brake. I always wondered if I was doing it correctly. Thanks Donny!!

Easy Peasy for the master !! Thanks for the helpful info! I think we've all been in this situation before where a springs takes off and shoots to the Moon! LOL

Excellent You just told me here in the Uk how to get that spring back in. I couldnt work out the best way to push it in and hold it.

just did this on a 455 rancher. what a pain! I used some vice grips to hold the spring down and channel locks to squeeze it all in from the other side of that plastic arm thing. fortunately it all snapped into place

I have a friends Poulan pro 295 here that had a broken brake band and handle. I ordered an aftermarket replacement thats identical to that in this video. Before installing it, i tried clicking it forward, and the band contracted. Disassembled several times, pulling out the last of my hair,no results. Ill try making this tool, hopefully it does the trick!!

I was using a husqvarna 141 that was given to us and I honestly thought the chain break was half broken with how tough it is to pull back. Being so used to flicking it on when I put the saw down with newer stuff it's almost unusable in that sense as you really have to yank the thing!

I bought an aftermarket chain brake for my 272xp. I followed your instructions, plus some other ones shown online, and it is still not functioning properly. As compared to my other saws (288, 372, 390, etc.), I'm not impressed with this aftermarket chain break (other than the price of course).

Ya the aftermarket 272 brakes suck

Yes aftermarket pull cord assemblies and clutch covers are no good, Unfortunately oem are pricey but you buy one and send it

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest purchasing a new aftermarket oil pump either

great info and a quick question...is there anything that would prevent clutch brake from disengaging if side cover is off ?

Donny, I have a Husqvarna 334t chainsaw. I took the cover off while the chainbrake was engaged. now I can't get it back together. I watched your vid on resetting the cahinbrake on the 200 series. that didn't help can you show or let me know the process to reset the 334t?

My 288 brake activates for no reason, but still requires hard pull to de-activate.
6:10 - What will a worn hole look like? will the hole be out of round? Smooth inside (no knurling)?
My hole does not appear to be out of round, but the inside is smooth (if there was knurling there, it has worn off).

Whats the difference in that brake and the one with the steel handle? I've got an old 61 that needs a new brake band.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 560 rancher that I inherited from my wife’s father that passed away many years ago and since I’ve had it the chain break has never worked. Any ideas? Does it work the same as the model in this video?

  • @Daltargames

Do you tighten reset the spring the same way on the newer 562s? They have a bit different gear that turns and I can’t figure it out for the life of me

Can we connect 365 parts to 266xp?

The brake on my 55 rancher wont "move fordward a little" after disengaging, so I dont have enough room to put my hand on the handle. When I try to fit my hand in between the handle and brake, the brake pushes forward and engages. Im thouroughly stumped as to why and how this happened, as well as how to fix it.

Great video! For the smaller 300 and also 200 series saws like shown at 13:52 with the 3 pawls in the clutch cover, you can unlock the brake nicely with a crescent wrench to engage the pawls and another wrench to rotate the crescent wrench. I showed how I rebuilt and unlocked one of those at the timestamp here: th-cam.com/video/4Tx_dj3vCs8/w-d-xo.html
I'm off to replace my 257 brake band. Subscribed, and thanks for the video!
