COLUMBIA RIVER BAR OR BUST! [Adventure #16]

  • The time has come... before we get to enjoy warm, sunny sailing and sunsets in the tropics, we have to get there! The journey South from Oregon to warmer weather calls for braving one of the most treacherous bar crossings in the world, the Columbia River Bar, AKA the graveyard of the Pacific, followed by an offshore ocean passage in the North Pacific. We get our sea legs with some real ocean swells and wind, but stay far enough offshore to avoid the gale conditions closer to the coast. Oh, and we catch a big Albacore Tuna! Check it out! (and we hope you don’t get too seasick watching)
    Don't forget to give us a thumbs up and subscribe our TH-cam Channel!

    Tried posting a comment but must have pushed the wrong button. I'm Dan, who you named you Fleming after. So happy to see it working so well and I'm proud to be your silent crew. Thank you again. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

      It was the least we could do, we were appreciative of your time and the story behind not only your life as a race mechanic but always the history of where "Dan" has been and will be going. We left Ventura, CA three days ago and Dan sailed us the 5 hour crossing to Santa Cruz Island, he will be our favourite crew member when we cross the Pacific in the future.

    Ty and Hillary, you guys are doing great! For me it doesn't matter if I am on a ship or a small sailboat, it takes about three days to get my sea legs. After that it's just sailing! Could you give a video "ships daily log?" Example date, time of day, lat/long, weather and sea conditions, sail rigging, making the rounds and checking the boat, and events like rigg adjustments or failures. I know you have done some already and it has been great! Also,,,,, I love to hear about what you're eating. A happy crew is a well fed crew! Keep up the great work and as always I can't wait for the next installment of Adventure Adrift. God Bless.

      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Yeah, the adjusting is no fun, but so much better once we got our sea legs,w e felt alive again! haha. Great ideas about daily log. I was surprised about how well we ate on the way down, we weren't planning on doing so much cooking, but it was good!

    I really enjoyed your upload..... your guys got your sealegs nice and quick - good thing considering the weather you had. Bars are bad news but manageable when you take the time to prepare and heed the warnings..... Ty... coming from the East Coast of Oz especially for NSW just about every port entrance is a bared entrance. The Wide Bay Bar (QLD) is one of the really nasty ones. 3 yrs ago I was helping deliver a Cat from Hamo to Syd and was caught there for 10 days before we got the weather window to get across, so well done !!

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes, we've heard stories like that of bars being closed and people stuck for days, so we're very glad we got lucky. And also have a lot of respect for the bar, considering that those were "good" conditions that we crossed in, definitely would not want to see it on a bad day...

    I kept my 1969 22' Columbia Sloop at Hammond OR and Ilwaco, WA for 20 years. I have no idea how many times I have sailed across the bar under from almost flat and barely a breeze to summer afternoons with way too much NW gales and 15 to 20' swells with the wind waves on top of of the big swells of 6' and the ebb smashing into those for some white knuckle moments in the crossing and breaking seas.. BUT.. good times and awsum memories.

    Dan is surely one of the most handsome windvanes ever, surely one of the most sturdy looking ones out there. I like the idea of Dan being the name you chose... But as you were saying that you named it, I was thinking "OH! Peggy, you got to have named it Peggy!" But Dan is a nice name too. Actually Peggy Fleming was the 1968 Olympic Gold medalist in ice skating for the US the only gold medal the US won that year. But, you might not have heard of her, after all that was over 48 years ago!

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahahaha, he sure is a handsome fellow, and we're happy to have him on board! We did not know that tidbit about Peggy Fleming, very interesting indeed!

    It’s really great that you guys show how you do your research and planning. So many of these channels, especially people jumping off from Florida after refits, they are just heading out on a wing and a prayer hoping for the best, but then getting in trouble due to lack of skill and experience to deal with any situation once something goes slightly awry, which it almost always will. The pacific coast is much less forgiving than the much more benign Florida routes.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, we wanted to be as prepared as we could - it's easy to get in over your head quickly out there!

  • @unclemuir
    @unclemuir 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well now that you are down to Ventura the worst is over. The weather prediction from the coast guard doesn't come with a guarantee, something you will get used to. You can only prepare for the worst and hopefully get the best. Nice albacore. Have fun.

      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, and crazy how fast conditions can change! We are looking forward to some more relaxed sailing down here, but are planning on heading back out to the Channel Islands for a while, so might have some more windy days, but at least we should have some sunshine to go along with it... haha

    This is one of the very best sailing movie of a yacht at sea, you have the yacht moving with the sea that is because you have the camera fix mounted and this to me give that real feelings of being at sea . Also you made me LOL at the last scenes .

      I agree, the wide shots with the camera mounted really gave me the sense of being onboard. Nicely done!
      I'm looking forward to seeing if the windage of the dodger and bimini interfere with Dan's helmsmanship when the wind is forward of the beam.

    Excellent. I watched this with my partner. We have a bar in the UK in Cornwall at Padstow, rather ominously called 'Doom Bar'. The plan is to cross it later in the Summer. She now feels she is prepared for the task after watching you guys. Great video as always.

    I think it is safe for me to say, that your channel will probably become one of the more popular cruiser channels on TH-cam. Every video gets better, and you are fun to watch as well. P.S. We used to have a friend that ran a fishing charter boat out of Ilwaco, and we went out numerous times. I was very young and naive and didn’t know to be scared. Probably a good thing. But you really have to hand it to those charter boats, who brave that almost daily, except on the worst days. Those are probably some of the most experienced captains and crews in the world.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree, those are some brave soles that do that daily! I assume crossing in a motorboat has its own benefits and drawbacks as opposed to a sailboat, but still, would take some nerve and some knowledge and experience!

      I have never been on the west coast of the US so seeing it is a priority.
      7 weeks in SF.
      My insurance restricts my entrance into Mexico until Oct 15 so no reason to rush down and wait.
      Christmas in LaPaz we think!
      Not sure if you have made the connection that I am the producer of "Off the Starboard Hull" on TH-cam. Most don't .

      Hi there! Yeah, overall the weather was pretty good, lots of wind meant lots of speed! Haha, only thing we could have asked for was some more sunshine, but I guess we'll get plenty of that now. Just catching up on your excellent videos. I sailed on a friend's Jeanneau 45 from Seattle to LaPaz, MX last fall, then to French Poly from March to July. It was a great experience. We did not have your wind on the trip down the coast, stayed more inshore because it was honking out where you went. We stopped in some great harbors on the way down as we had time to kill. LaPaz was great! 19 days from there to The Marquesas even with El Nino messing with the breeze. This video does a great job of capturing the "boisterous" conditions often encountered at sea. Very impressed with your vane. Good plan having an extra hand on-board for your first offshore work.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy our videos, we will certainly have to do a boat tour sometime to show every nook and cranny of SV Varuna. We do not have a gimbal in any of these video's, we try and use tripods a lot for stabilization or sometimes the video editing stabilization works a tad. We will look at trying to use a gimbal on future videos, our biggest challenge has been presentable audio without wind noise.
      Cheers.

    Fantastic video! Really liked the educational part on the crossing of the bar and when to attempt it. That kinda informational knowledge helps me in planning our casting off the lines. Also, what type of mic were you using when in the cockpit with following seas. Your voice was clear and crisp. I had to be some kind of lavalier mic. Would like to know brand and type, please. Keep it up gang. Love watching your travels!!

      Man, sorry we tried to get rid of as much as we could, and added the captions to the harder to hear bits. 25-30 knot winds are not friendly to mic's... :/ As for the mileage, we have no schedule to keep, so we go as fast (or slow) as the wind takes us. We were doing about 150 miles a day here, averaging about 6 knots of boat speed.

    Another great vid guys. At the masthead you didn't mention that corrosion and pitting in the mast itself. It seemed like there had once been a fitting up there; the corrosion may well have been neutralised but it didn't look too pretty. Next time you're up there it might be worth giving it a closer look. Perhaps coat the damaged area with a skin of silicone sealant? Just a thought. Go, you!!!

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, yeah we have been doing a bit of research on that. Sounds like something we should be able to sand, seal and paint, have read a few different opinions on what to use to seal it with, so doing some research and seeing what kind of product we can get. Have you had any experience with this on aluminum?

    • @RoyClare
      @RoyClare 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there - I am not a specialist - merely a practical guy with a bit of experience!
      Dealing with a small areas of corrosion on the mast of my last boat - a Beneteau 285 - I cleaned it thoroughly with fresh water and applied a skin of silicone sealant as a patch covering. Some people use polish to achieve the same effect - namely a barrier to the air.
      At that time (6 or 7 years ago) I was advised not to paint as it wasn't likely to be a sustainable fix: preparation needs to be very through, including specialist primer; once painted, paint needs to be re-applied surprisingly often; and there is a risk that the corrosion merely continues under the surface - unseen. Many paint manufacturers specifically advise against painting anodized masts.
      Given that the area on your mast seems a little larger than those I experienced, possibly a result of galvanic action under a previous fitting, I would suggest that before you adopt a solution you might take a *really* close look......
      The thing would be to ascertain whether the pitting is superficial - surface only - or whether it has actually thinned the wall of the mast. In the latter case, most people I know with specialist knowledge seem to agree that the best long term fix is a professionally welded patch (not merely a plate that covers the damaged area - under which all sorts of things could be going on out of sight!).
      Sorry, not too helpful, I fear.
      Boats, huh?

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the info, always good to hear opinions and other experiences that others have had :) We plan to take a closer look here and see if it's something we need to address. We did find a product that should be good for preventing corrosion on aluminum... zinc chromate and zinc phosphate, so we may try that is needed.

    Just a word of caution, lifevest are dangerous below deck, especially if resting. They can pin you in the boat when things go south. If the boat takes on water, gets hit by a rogue wave, then your life saving device can limit your exit, or worst pin you to the ceiling if submerged. Manual inflated vest accrually are better in this regards. In Canadian waters, it's recommended not to wear them in cabins or below decks for this very reason.

    • @GeorgeGraves
      @GeorgeGraves 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do they really inflate that big that you couldn't get through the companion way? Guess it depends on the boat.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, and makes sense. We generally took them off when we went below deck, only left them on if it was going to be a quick trip down there... It became quite the nice break to go below and take off the vest and harness actually! haha

    Wow!! Just discovered your channel today. Love your videos!!! They're very educational and inspiring. Ty's antics are delightfully funny, too. Many youtubers know a lot of stuff about their subject, but not everyone is capable of TEACHING what they know and many hold back important info rather than sharing.
    I have a question and you guys seem like the perfect people to ask. I've been wondering for a long time-- when paying by the foot to park the boat somewhere, what all must be included in the length? I know there's an "official" LOA for each vessel, but do you have to include a non-original bowsprit, for example? What about the stainless tubular structures that often protrude beyond the stern-- like those built for solar panels and/or dinghy storage, or even "Dan" for that matter? Is all of that add-on, non-original stuff included in the overall length when paying by the foot?
    I appreciate you both. Thank you for being GREAT TEACHERS and WILLING to SHARE your knowledge and experience. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say on this subject in reply to this comment or in a video-- either way. THANK YOU!!!

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mate thanks for writing and watching, glad we can offer worthwhile education and we love inspiring people as many have inspired us. To answer your question, yep even Dan :( really it depends on the habour master if they come by, you can tell them you are 36 feet but if you are there any length of time they will measure you tip to toe. Anything that hangs over is considered chargeable by the marina's etc. this is why many boats will do retractable bowsprits. Cheers... Ty

    See if you can locate a compounding pharmacy in your current area and have them make you some Scopace capsules. You will need a prescription from your doctor. I fish in the ocean (Oregon and Washington coasts) via kayak and the Scopace capsules are the way to go. I take one about an hour before launch, and one every 4 hours to keep them overlapped. I can stick my head in a bowl of chum, on rough seas, while sniffing diesel fumes with zero issues. Without it, I would puke like a drunk teenager regularly.

    Hi to you both,
    Please bear in mind this is not a criticism but advice.
    You made me laugh when you were very thorough cleaning the stay wires after seeing a little corrosion up there on the mast. However, you really should have taken the pins or bolts out and cleaned and greased the joints as well as cleaning the rust.
    It is the rust that shows there is possibly something wrong, but you never went that far.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you and we appreciate your advice, we plan on doing more thorough work later in the year. We have had a survey and inspection on the boat this year and we have a good history on her up until now, we mainly wanted to make sure no pins or anything obvious was out of place. Thank you for your advice and we will take it on board for our next trip up.

    • @mrbluenun
      @mrbluenun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      And I thank you for your kind reply. Can I say your videos tell your story very well, great videography!
      You may or not be aware of another sailor who had a so called Professional look over his boat whilst he was on it and after a short three day cruise they found the stays holding the mast up were split at one point and they found it co-incidentally as they were diving, one or more of the (I am guessing ’18') strand steel rope was spit.
      They had paid $300 for this chap to check everything, and from now on, because the boat was their home they decided after doing the job themselves and paying a Royal Yacht Club to Use their facilities of there engineering shop $over $10,000, to do a the checking in the future!
      After saying this as again a kind of gentle warning, was it not your yacht you had a woman who I think you said on a video took almost a full day to check over even the minutest of details?
      It took something like an hour for the check of a 53 or 58ft yacht and even though, you know, it would not have cost him, a ‘professional yacht surveyor’ and he took the trouble to go up the mast he mentioned nothing.
      I certainly do not want to worry you, and if your boat was the one the surveyor was a woman and very competent, you can sit a little more relaxed that she did seem to get into every cranny and nook!
      It still doesn’t mean you can take it as what she said was from the Bible. Whatever your pressures to get here or there it is your ‘Home’ and your personal safety at risk.
      Do your own checking! You should have or be able to get the original building drawing, work from them and call specialists in when and if necessary.
      Take care, No need for a reply, just get into more friendly waters.
      PS. Sorry for any errors, my keyboard is not working properly.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes, always sad to hear stories like that. You're right, we were lucky to have an extremely thorough surveyor, who spent about 10 hours going over every nook and cranny of the boat, she was amazing! But even so, like you said it is our home, so we plan to keep a close watch and take great care of everything on board. Thanks so much for your kind comments. We are looking forward to spending more time in warm friendly waters too :)
