agree! we have a huge problem on the west coast of Canada with Derelict and Abandoned boats. Leaking toxins into the ocean and causing eco harm to marine life. So repurposing a used boat wins the day in our Green Boater community. kudos.

I'm with everybody else here. I dont care how much you made. Hopefully you made a fortune, but as an older person money comes and goes. Money in its own right doesn't make you happy, it just gives you freedom and choices (not always a guarantee to happiness). You're health is the most valuable thing.

As a life long boater, you guys are absolutely spot on with your assessment. In my opinion, only two kinds of people should own a boat, someone with an open checkbook, or someone who isn't afraid to get to work, and push beyond your comfort zone when necessary. I'm the latter and find it much more rewarding and fulfilling. Great work and a great experience. The knowledge gained in every project is impossible to put a dollar figure on, because it might be 30 years before you lean on that skill again.

Very true! I had a boat because I love to fish. The first two years were great. Few problems and lots of fish. Slowly though it turned into working on the boat more than fishing. Finally it was seemed I was a having to spend a grand everytime i wanted to use it to catch a few fish. It had to go.

I’ve had a 1980 Marine Trader 41 for 15 years. I’ve done upgrades and maintenance. Nothing is harder then boat work. The physical nature of it, the crazy cost for materials and the basic fixed costs of moorage. Also, boats deteriorate. The sun and rain do incredible damage overtime. Underneath things grow and eat your boat. And don’t forget the animals, seagulls shit on your boat, otters have meals and shit on your boats and low life’s and crooks break into your boat and expensive tradesman make mistakes. I’ve seen it all. So congratulations, keep living the dream while your young and have your health.

I did a similar thing at the age of 72. I bought a 27 ft. cruiser in S. Carolina on Ebay from my desk in the UK. Flew out, cleaned her up ($1.70 lavatory bowl cleaner works well) put 3 weeks work into making her seaworthy then headed for New Orleans. Next year sold her at a price that covered my travelling costs (but not my labour) so basically a paid for holiday in wonderful America. It can be done in the US but I'm not too sure the same thing can be done in Europe.

Amazing restoration! I am impressed by your amazing work ethic. This was a colossal project, not many could take on something this massive so I give you lots of credit. Over the years I've done several boat resto's myself but nothing of the scale of Mountain Myst. I know what it's like to grind through the heat, dust, and itch until the job is done. My last one was a 1960's Whaler which made me about the same per hour rate of $10/hr that you both made. It was a labor of love, and that I believe has to be the real motivation. There's so much satisfaction from bringing back a boat from the dead so someone can enjoy it for many more years. Congrats!

Rent. Electric. Garbage. Water. lawn care. Parking. All cost to add into consideration as well. Even a low rent house or apartment, is 20-30k a year or more, depending on where you are at. It's good that you are both young, strong, and eager to have awesome experiences. I agree that the actual cost is well payed for by the experiences. I've had the good fortune to visit and live in 49 states, and 3 countries. I was never 'wealthy' in money, in fact, dirt poor. But the experiences I got to see and enjoy... I'm a multi-billionaire from them. Keep it up and enjoy life. Ya'll rock.

You guys did a great job of restoring the old girl. At the end of the day just because you fork out for professional labour it sure as hell doesn't mean your getting a professional quality job. Much better idea to do the homework and do it yourself. It's a lot of work I've done it many times but at the end of the day its money in the bank for another project. Congrats on the sale.

Great video. You must of heard me mention to my wife that I didn't think you were including your time spent on filming or editing :-)
Sierra was very energetic and spoke well throughout the video.

Thank you so much for the recap! I loved the Mountain Myst story from start to finish. Sorry to see her go. I think the new owner got a good deal! ( I worked at Jensen Marine in Costa Mesa, CA in the 70's Some DeFevers were made there - maybe Mountain Myst!)

You two could easily start a business of evaluating boats prior to purchase for buyers that are considering a fixer upper but don’t have the knowledge and experience that you do. Your expertise I would be invaluable. Thanks for the videos. I love your work ethic.

    Bloody good effort bro's
Done many refits myself and know exactly what it takes, especialy putting earmuffs on, head down and do it. I'm doing a refit of MS Matakana in my driveway and every man and the dog want to stop and yake. And this is 60kms from the coast. Cheers from down under in NZ.

I'm so glad you share this. I've never done a boat but have worked a lot of projects for myself. I do it because I love the work, but I fear that people who only watch amazing transformation videos like this have no idea what is involved. You two are awesome and have amazing work ethic.

QUESTION: (maybe someone already asked): What about the cost of your housing expense/rent paid - or saved - for the duration of the project.
Did you eat/sleep/live on the boat? I count also on the positive side of the ledger the cost/value of taking those cruise adventures compared with if you had to pay others for all of that travel. Congrats on the sale, and good luck with the BIG CAT. 3K+ subscriber LIKE; 9,881st follower view. Yes - Sierra covered all of this.
Good onya - well done. CHEERS!!

Billy, I saw you tear down an engine and rebuild it from scratch - in just a few days. I've seen you repair stuff - you are an experienced, capable mechanic. Your time would be worth close to $100. But, the two of you must factor in the 7 months that kept you occupied as your new boat was being built. You were busy, not bored. Time flew by. $89,000 was a good price in exchange for your sense of self-fullfillment, and of doing a great job. :¬) Webhead USA

Lets not discount that you have lived on the boat rent free. The knowledge and expertise you have gained is priceless .

You two did a bang up job on Mountain Myst. A build from scratch? That should be fun to watch.

Nothing any better than giving yourself back your own equity. Never give anyone your equity to fulfill their dream. Always make sure you pay yourself first. That being said. This is my second comment because my first comment was when I received the video. I hit save and I am now watching the video. This comment is for the algorithm. Thank you so much for all of your amazing videos. 🍻🫡🏴‍☠️🤙🏼🍸🍾🥂🍷🍹🥃

I THINK YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON THAT BOAT. The heck with others who may disagree, but you kids are great, I know what its like, when I was young I rebuilt a skiff someone through away. When I lived in Florida, it took along time but it was worth it.

Well done to both of you, your hard work paid off at approximately 10,50 an hour. Yikes, good thing you love what you do, you’re correct Billie, you’d make more at good ole McDs, however you’d never see and experience they amazing places and things at McDs. Love your content and cannot wait for the next project.
