I can actually explain why the Silver one is louder, it's because of the low noise floor. The blue and black MXR eq pedals were notorious for their noise and hiss, so a low noise mod, known as the "Silent Night" mod became popular, as not only would the noise be reduced, but the pedal would actually become more efficient and have more output. The silver MXR eqs, both the 6 band and 10 band (I have the 10 band) are the modern design which has the low noise floor as standard, along with True Bypass. That's why the Silver EQ is louder and frankly better.
Okay, thought I was really super haf but thanks for confirming, as I also thought the silver was somehow, inexplicably, different *and* better as well. The little bit of additional dynamic range really reflects further down the signal change it goes. I was actually thinking at first that they cleaned up some of the circuitry and improved it, but then the actual DI signal comparison made it looked like the old pedal was compressing it somehow (no clipping, but whole signal is either pushed down or somehow attenuated in average amplitude levels) but I like your explanation in that it teaches me some history along with the physics/science of amplification and signal shaping in a practical and controlled setting. I bet the bypass on the silver eq is pretty clean as well...since it's now got a switch.
Robman275 Nerd 🤓. Haha. In all seriousness thanks for the explanation. This just proves that often times newer versions are better and more technologically advanced. My money is on the newer one. 👍

He also told me he felt bad for not making up with Dime before he was killed. He told me that they grew distant through the 90's, due to reasons, etc. Anyway... Just thought it was cool what he told me. He even told me how to set the EQ, and the history behind it, etc. He basically told me the Exhorder guitar EQ settings. It was quite the experience. In the video I noticed that the 800 isn't maxed out. If I heard right Vinnie told me it's to be maxed out, and then frown from there. I honestly can't remember much beyond that. That's if I even heard that right. I'll ask him if I get a hold of him. Marzi Montazeri (Exhorder) told me about a cool Solar guitar he's getting here in about a month roughly(?); he used two during the concert I was at. He even showed me the picture of it on his phone. All I'll say is it's white without the usual Solar logo. Good stuff. The venue locked him out on accident, and I went through it to open the door for him not knowing who is was at the time. Funny how things work out sometimes. I also got a special stage dropped guitar pick. From what Vinnie told me, Marzi hasn't dropped a pick since he was 16. My Silver version arrived and IT WORKS GREAT! I did replicate Ola's settings here and it's a great place to start. I'm not exactly a metal player, but this EQ box does act as an effective CLEAN/ TRANSPARENT BOOST to your amp and really opens the tone up. Put it as the first in your chain.
If you do the same test between 2 blue ones, it'll probably give you the same differences as you measured between the blue and the silver, mainly because, Analog, they have passive components with slight margins of error that even the same exact circuit will have slight differences when compared between. Only thing of note is the volume, probably a change on the output stage to compensate for huge frequency cuts, but I bet the rest of the circuit is pretty much the same.
I had exactly the same request above lol, there is a difference. I think the dB difference between blue/silver eq might be the low noise floor on the silver one? Not 100% sure but that would make sense as another comment stated why in detail.
@@terminalvelocity4858 About the level difference, most likely, and, that noise floor might be actually from a different opamp used. Ola, please keep making videos like this. I'm not a great guitarist, but I love guitar gear. A trend in videos, something like like "V1 vs Modern" versions of pedals, would be golden.
I have the pq3 and the mxr doubler......i gotta be honest ...if u use a metal zone as a clean boost in the front and put a analog chorus pedal (at low level) through the loop it dosent sound too different lol
I have found a solution for these problems but they werent cheap. So i have saved up and bought the positive grid bias mini amp and wanted a dime sound but all the gear is either not in production or way too expensive. This is what i did. I bought amplitube's dimebag cfh pack, i already had bias amp 2 and bias fx, i dialed in the dime live tone, on the program i had access to digital versions of the pq 3 and doubler so i layered those, i amp matched the tone WITHOUT the mxr eq pedal active, i hooked my bias mini up to my cabinet and added my pedals that are available for dime tone (wah, mxr eq, tube screamer for leads). And there you go
Awesome video, I’ve had this question in my head for years. The “DIME” line of amps that Grady Champion collaborated on are awesome, they were pretty cheap originally too. I found one used and it sounds better than any heavy tone amp I’ve ever played, including the Warhead 2x12 combo I had. If you’re a Dime tone chaser you need to get that amp!!
I'm pretty sure even with 2 blue units (or 2 silver units) the difference would be equal to this one... In each pedal of the same model you can't test each resistors, each capacitors or even each switch and wires resistances, especially with mass production, so you are pretty sure to have a little audible difference!
Hey ola, just want to say this. Except for the demo, what i really liked about this video were the lights! Your ability on making videos is amazing now.
Dude, you did a great job comparing them. The silver one sounded a bit louder but the tone was the same to me. I would get the silver one to save the headache.
I care too! Thanks Ola! Please more Dimebag. I'm subscribed and belled for multiple reasons. But have to say I really appreciate your appreciation for Dimebag. Living in Austin I was a Pantera fan and saw them Everytime they played here since 90.
I have very little intrest on Dimebags tone, but You, sir, going through all this for shit and giggles makes me a proud follower of yours. Keep up the good work!!
Ola thanx for the test comparison. I never liked the old MXR blue one because you couldn't switch it off. I used have a DoD 6 band and it was great. It took all the harshness out of my Mesa Boogie Mark 1, when switched on. Sorry I got rid of that amp. I bought one of the silver MXR's to add on my board which is all MXR effects.
These videos are pure gold 👌 not that I’ll ever really buy any of the equipment you test but it’s really interesting and great watching you test it. Keep it up Ola 😎
dude i totally agree about the gear nerding. I would see this type of comparison for new and old versions of other pedals. things like an old MIJ BOSS SD-1 vs a current model. I really appreciate the extra mile you went using a visual graph to show frequency and Db differences. awesome video.
love it love dimebag im gonna have my first black tooth grin when i finish school in june i will force my friends to knock it back it too (it aint candy)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. We have an experienced and knowledgeable DIME fan and gear master General.....I mean Admiral :) Damn Straight Century 200. I mean you wanna talk brass tacks or what right ? 'Ol Boy Knows.
Doesn't he have the Century 200 Mark II? Different amp tonally than the original C200, but still a beast! I think he said in a recent video that he has plans to, just needs the time to put a proper demo out. I think he has the same amp as Ryan Bruce here on TH-cam, which he already did a demo of. Curious to see Ola's take.
@@terminalvelocity4858 I'm 2 years late and the Century vid is already out, but... I think the MkII is the one Dime used. Anyhow, whether it's for Dime or not, the amp deserves attention.
The question tho, is whether you need an MXR EQ at all? You could get the same sound with a Boss EQ, a Daphon one - even a Mooer, if you knew how to use it properly. At the end of the day, isn’t an EQ pedal just an EQ pedal? If an EQ pedal works properly (has true bypass and a low noise floor), then it shouldn’t noticeably colour the tone at all, should it? (Incidentally, I own the blue one and the stereo rack version, but I’m a nerd. The one I actually use a lot is a Boss GE-7 with the ‘Peace & Quiet’ mod).
Damn! That is some nostalgic stuff man! I knew abott since the days that he was called diamond darrell.and his demonic finger stretch lessons helped me a lot. Those fu*&&/ demonic finger stretch exercises were a real murder on me but it really helped me a lot! fu"+. Remembering diamond darrell made me sad that he's gone. I'm gonna drink a bottle of whiskey and play cemetery gates. Hell yeah!
I was so obsessed with dimes tone I saved and saved and I have all the original she-ite as well (your missing a few things but I won't knit pick Ola) er er But a yeah, I actually thought that silver thing sounded better and so did you because I saw you wake up a little there Mr. Englund and you started strummin' with a little more pep in yo step. Turns out it was just a little louder and brought out the tone a little more. Yeah ? there are a few little things like the dbx noise gate/limiter or sometimes he used a Rocktron Hush noise gate and I have a few other secret weapons that nail it but nothing nails it like the new Dime Plug-In you did a demo of last month. I loved it. I want it. But I have an old 2009 Macbook Pro and I'm ass out of luck. I'm old and am computer challenged. Any of you computer experts out there know if I can upgrade my Macbook pro (2009-10) to use for plug ins ? like IK Media Amplitude 4, Fortin Amps, The DIME plug-in, and Mercurial AMT-11x also demo by our fearless leader OLA ! Great Demo Ola !
teriakamoto you can get a cheap netbook or laptop nowadays that will be more than enough to power the plugin, the important part is the audio interface to plug your guitar into the computer. However I think you need special speakers that are ASIO4ALL compatible, (audio type basically) and that's were the money starts to get high, but it's worth it in my opinion.
@Ecks Dhee The speakers don't need to be ASIO4ALL compatible, speakers don't care about any protocols, only your sound card does. If you sound card or USB DAC (which is basically a sound card) works with ASIO4ALL, which pretty much all of them will, it will output either an analog signal which speakers understand (if they are powered) or a digital signal which would then need to be run through a DAC.
Thank You@@buttoxchewy . I appreciate that. What is a decent low cost interface that would be compatible with IK Media,The DIME Plug-In, Amplitude 4,etc.,as well as other plug ins. Most important IK Media because that DIME plug in really nails it. I know Ola has a whole Desktop studio with high end Universal Audio Interface and everything else top of the heap gear that contributes to it sounding High Quality.Maybe even some post production ? Which is awesome. It really sounded great and I got to say that Ola is a very, very good guitar player and you can see he really likes paying those old Pantera songs. Tone is in the fingers for sure but that IK DIME plug in is SO dead on.

New Silver EQ: ON/OFF Switch Old Blue EQ: No ON/OFF Switch New Silver EQ: LED Sliders, so you can see them in dim lit stage settings Old Blue EQ: No LEDs New Silver EQ: 40-60% of the price of the older version Old Blue EQ: Way over-priced, due to nostalgia and people trying to get rich from Dime's death, nearly 2 decades later. I mean...it's pretty obvious. This wasn't a useless video. It was quite helpful AND entertaining haha.
What I noticed was the Blue original is tighter, gathers up the low end better. I can actually feel my subwoofer at my feet warbling during the new Silver model, like it's not grabbing up the low end.

I like short nerd videos like you did, thx. It's really kind of you to take some time and make this out for us. Thumbs up !
Hey ola, just want to say this.
Except for the demo, what i really liked about this video were the lights!
Your ability on making videos is amazing now.
Dude, you did a great job comparing them. The silver one sounded a bit louder but the tone was the same to me. I would get the silver one to save the headache.
Love it! Not enough demos refer to the frequency curves!
I care too! Thanks Ola! Please more Dimebag. I'm subscribed and belled for multiple reasons. But have to say I really appreciate your appreciation for Dimebag. Living in Austin I was a Pantera fan and saw them Everytime they played here since 90.
seeing ola playing a dean ml is weird so used to seeing him play his Washburns
Dimebag fanboy GEEK! \m/
Needed this video. Thank you. Shopping for EQ and need this kind of comparison.
love it
love dimebag
im gonna have my first black tooth grin when i finish school in june
i will force my friends to knock it back it too (it aint candy)
We didn’t all leave right away! Gear Nerderyyyy!!!
Thanks Ola, love your content. I went ahead and bought a new silver version, used to own the old blue one. Still have my old PQ3 and RG100ES.
Thank you so much! I was looking for a good video demoing the 6 band EQ and this is exactly what I wanted to hear.
Excellent honest test. I appreciate stuff like this.
I'm sure there's no guitar youtuber in the whole world who'd just burp in front of camera and still be cool! lol Love it
Great vid ola..always a pleasure
Ola, when will you demo the Century 200 already?
Amazing vid, actually very useful. It's nice to learn something new about dimebag's tone
Gotta love when the man is just a fan.
The one I actually use a lot is a Boss GE-7 with the ‘Peace & Quiet’ mod).
its the small things like this that make this channel killer!
If you were to knit pick, any specific pieces of gear other than the noise gates? I too am a sucker for tone science
Thank You.Appreciate that@@buttoxchewy
Thank you for being nerdy af because I care and I hate hassle and deal with enough of that trying to figure out all this band shit so I appreciate it!
7:42 I freakin love that kind of test!! I would pass all my free days doing theses kind of GEARTEst!!
I think this how we can forge our proper sound by testing all theses myths in the gear addict area!!
Even if I wasn't looking for a EQ pedal, I find your video interesting and very instructive, particularly the moment with the eq reamping process!
I wanna see a video where you start on clean and add in one effect at a time, building up to the dime tone.
Hey Ola, I'm sure that the most people (me included) who follows you from the beginning loves the nerdy shit and videos like this, also this kind of content generate more topics for your FAQs so thank you very much for share this priceless content. Cheers from Venezuela.
I still have & use my same MXR 6 band eq I bought used in 1982. Its awesome
Great vid as usual Ola. BWT just preordered your solo album! Keep up the good work! Oh, and got a t-shirt too ;)
New Silver EQ: ON/OFF Switch
Old Blue EQ: No ON/OFF Switch
New Silver EQ: LED Sliders, so you can see them in dim lit stage settings
Old Blue EQ: No LEDs
New Silver EQ: 40-60% of the price of the older version
Old Blue EQ: Way over-priced, due to nostalgia and people trying to get rich from Dime's death, nearly 2 decades later.
Great video Ola that tone sounded mint! Keep up the vids bro I look forward all week for your vids to come out. (Burp-Clap!)
Love your videos you crazy swedish...
Awesome!! One step closer. Ola could you please demo MXR DD11 Dime Distortion & Dime Cry Baby from hell. Would like to know if it is a Legit or a fail.
I thought it was a great vid Ola! 🤘🤘🤘. Nerding out with Ola. I checked in the silver eq and used the are going for $50-$60 in the US
Your custom shop Dean from Hell probably cost 5x what the original was
I don’t think it is a custom shop
@@skycaptain141 it is a custom shop, it has the stamp on the back of the headstock and the certificate.
@@may_12521 i think its a limited run if 100. Dean were selling them on their site
Lazaro Murillo yea forgot what number did ola got
@@may_12521 if i remember right he got #47
Thanks Ola, nice job
trim those strings! you'll have someone's eye out!

@@flekkzo Actually kind of a badass name for a guitar 😂
2:12 old eq, 3:43 silver eq direct comparison if you want to save some time.
when you said you were compareing the new and old EQS i screamed best video ever.
Thanks for making this video......I'm in the market for a MXR 6 band EQ and was wondering if there was much of a difference...….now I know, thanks man.
You know what? I really like this nerdy Ola! More please!
I see your nerdy and raise you twenty... I took this to the next level and held my silver MXR 6-band to the screen to match your settings. Nice!
this was awesome, thanks ola. could you do a demo of the mxr flanger doubler? keep up the good work.
Ola, this kind of videos are as close to gold as we can get. Keep being a nerd. Guitar nerds of the internet are counting on you. Btw., what do you think about Polish Black Metal bands Mgła?
That was cool. Love your dedication
This is awesome. I’m full swing in a Pantera kick right now. Just found a Dime patch on Bias and I’m so in love with it. Had to take a break and watch this, then I’m gonna go after some more riffage
Dude this test was awesome. Thanks for doing it!!!
Ola, I deeply care about testing sh**. I don't have a computer and I've been buying mxr equipment for 40 years. 60 years old been playing guitar a long time man, love your videos okay maybe not love but you get it
Yeah man ,,, same same ... Thanks ...
I love this kind of videos, you are so awesome
Keep nerding out.
I need to know stuff like that too.
Thanks Dude.
