The year was 1987....I bought a brand new Peavey VTM 120 half stack and had 2 pedals on my board....an Ibanez 7 band eq and a chorus/flanger pedal. I messed with that eq until one day I pushed the mids and level and boom, there it was. Never ran an overdrive with that amp, it was nasty and the eq boosted it perfectly. I have all of the popular overdrive and use them depending on the amp, but the eq is so flexible, it is still my favorite boost.

My favorite boost for a Marshall is a modded GE-7 (quieter + more gain). You don't lose clarity like you do with overdrive pedals.

I use my EQ pedal as boost for leads, i run it in my FX loop. That’s because by bypassing the preamp i get as clean of a signal as possible to work with, basically it’s like adding more EQ options to the amp. The cool thing about this approach in contrast to something like the great EP Booster is that it gives me plenty of options to tweak my lead tone and it always cuts. Cheers.

So prof. the takeaways from today's lesson are:
    1) with an EQ (in front) you can replicate more or less every overdrive out there as long as you match its frequency curve?
    2) with an EQ in the loop you will get more versatility out of an amp like a Mesa Mark series?
    3) The clean with boost in front (tubescreamer) was pretty much what SRV used to get his tones?
    4) Overdrive in front and a smily EQ in the loop to go full Dimebag?...😁
I use a TS9 in front (15% drive, 85% level) with a smily in EQ in the (parallel) loop in the JCM2000 TSL602 and it sounds killer...Its like converting a 3 channel amp to a 6 channel amp with two modes for each configuration...a barkier with the EQ of and a scooped with the EQ on...
    killer vid again man \m/

      1) not overdrive ’cos you’re missing the clipping

      4) could work

What’s crazy is that 17 minutes into this (the slight scoop smile) is exactly how I’ve been using my 7 band boss eq settings in the effects loop with a sd1 boost in front. The slight scoop of the eq seems to make it more percussive. Same settings apply when using a preamp pedal behind it.
Oddly, the boss 7band seems to work better with my dsl100hr and my 10 band mxr works better with my TSL100.
In short, there doesn’t seem to be bad eq pedals but rather, just a matter what matches better with what.

Lots of professional musicians only use an EQ pedal and a good tube amp, for Metal maybe a modified amplifier optimised for higher gain and headroom, no need for a distortion or overdrive pedal, I really like the MXR KFK 10 band EQ, a bit on expensive side but will put all you overdrive pedals on the box

After all your videos running the 1959HW at lower voltage with the variac and it sounding great, but it not blowing up, I was beginning to think that maybe I can get away with doing the same. I am not sure it would blow the amp up though. It just starves the plates of voltage. I think why Eddie's amps blew up might be because he said cut the voltage, but then adjusted the bias by ear. Then he turned them to 10. I dunno, I was not there.
The 6CA7 tubes he ran are kind of cool. I ended up with less watts from the amp using a pair of the same old tubes. About 35 watts instead of 50 watts. But the low end was different. It was solid. I still have the tubes, but do not use them. They are super rare now, so I want to look after them, rather than use them up noodling.
P.S. Parcel tracking says 'with courier". My new Warm Audio Warm Bender fuzz that I plan to use with my Echoplex style delay to try and get the Dazed and Confused sound. I need to order a violin bow now :D

    • @EugeValovirta230V
      @EugeValovirta230V  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well obviously not since I run it at lower voltage but running it higher it would probably blow up immediately 😎.
I’ve never understood the ”don’t use a Variac you’ll destroy your amp” - thing. I’ve used Variac for years with my Plexis and they’re in great condition, probably better than running them with full power.

I’ve just swap my ge7 to eq 200. Èq 200 is a swiss knife. It is actually 2 èq pedals in one. I’ve connected one part in front of amp and second in the loop. It has MIDI control and patches. So if I want to play clean I select preset for cleans which for example tames emg81 (I have one guitar so for real cleans I don’t have a strat) in front. If I want heavy staff then there is patch for that. Very versatile. For sure eq pedal is underestimated tool in pedalboard. And, as usual, many thanks for your Chanel. I huge fan of your style of playing. Btw I wanted to buy your new album, tell me is avaible in one place/online store? Price for CD is accepted but shipping fee is hard to swallow

A missed way of using the eq pedal in front , is set your lead tone and volume with the eq pedal Off, Now reduce the eq and gain below half, turn it on, this is your lighter / less volume , less gain ,Rhythm sound. Turn it back off , there is your loud solo sound.

I like eq in the front because it changes the sound hitting the amp and speaker without making them sound ”different”. Not everyone will agree.
