    Hope no one gives you shit for your channel. As someone that was being used during my first apprenticeship, I can really appreciate this. Dude was literally leaving me at the shop with another artist (that just finished an apprenticeship) to clean, set apps, open/close, draw tattoos for HIS appointments and then taking my money so he could go gamble at the casino. And I did that while working 50+hr a week job.

    you wanna have a laugh , I have nice machines but this week I tried tuning all the cheap old ones and oh lord hahah I have wasted some time an fucked around tinkering for hrs at a time one machine drove me mad hahah (I had re wrapped all the coils myself a few years ago) , they tune up unloaded but soon as any tension on em they suck and need high volts ..... 2 of em are ok loaded maybe just as shaders. really make me appreciate My nice machines , you are an old school tattoo wizard any question ive had you've answered in your vid content thanks again man

    Just want to say its very much appreciated that you have devoted the time to share this experience and very useful information. The time ive had on a personal level with apprenticed and seasoned tattoo artists is very minimal compared to the time ive spent meticulously practicing other art mediums that I have become more confident in. But there have been a times when someone saw some potential in me and attempted to start an apprenticeship with me. And it just never worked out . They explain things way to fast use to much shop terminology and it s so much to process. So since I found your Chanel ive been watching quit a bit and just wanted to compliment you on your deliveries and and how understandably you make the process.. so my question to you is about when you mentioned the front spring being even or higher to the nipple on the armature bar if it is lower will the machine still operate correctly? I recently bought some very inexpensive machines from a set and according to every thing you teach about a machine being tuned correctly and having correct parts an washers they seem like they were put together great except for the springs being all one piece on the gun that is post to be the liner. . And the spring isnt even with the nipple it is quit lower. So would I have to replace the spring with a longer one? I will try to attach pics.

    Firstly, thank you soooo much for all these informational videos! It's awesome to see someone who is willing to share their knowledge and advance the community and industry through transparency, even though it goes against the traditional nature of the craft.
    I just had a question about tuning. When you're tuning a machine to run cartridges, would you need a lighter spring/armature bar to compensate for the resistance from the cartridge setup?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Right off the top of my head I would say you want the same hit that you would with a needle. You are correct that the cartridge has that pushback on the armature bar. I didn't even think about that when I was using them. I just put them in and ran it like I usually would. You have to adjust your machines for whatever obsticle you might run into. A good artist will know enought to adjust a machine if it isn't doing what it is supposed to. The more you know the more you can make these decisions. Honestly I didn't even think about it. Now that you bring it up I will look into it some more. I'm going to say though if you go to tattoo and the machine needs more voltage I would turn it up a little. If it is tattooing just fine I would leave it alone.

    I am finding a lot of coil tuning videos... I use rotary & swash drive and would love to see you do tuning videos for the hummingbird 'type' & swash drive machines that include trouble shooting issues such as the needle bouncing of the clients skin causing difficulty in lining.
    Another topic not often shown is the proper needle for various skin types/areas of the body/age of client as these all factor into the needle selection & rotary tattoo machine settings. Thanks!

    At 28:44 when you said air gap is the gap between contact screw and front spring -- isn't that called the point gap? Air gap is the gap between armature bar and front core?

    I have found that when I use coins for washer for my springs, that adding a washer on top of that provides a good even distribution of force on the coin, reducing bending, and maintains pressure on the spring.

    Great demonstration mate
    You really went Into depth with this video.
    I am currently having some issues with tuning my machines, I basically got my lining machines tuned but having trouble with my color Packer and Shafer I did a bit of research and from what I read on the Net your supposed to have your shading and color Packer machines set at 6-8 volts and 8-10 for your lining now I did that and went by ear and to me they still were not quite right i don't know much about the armature bars and springs and what not and I don't want to wreck my machines I was thinking maybe you could give me a few tips or suggestions or something.

    • @elliottnunez1057
      @elliottnunez1057 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harley Thornton what you read on the net about voltage is WRONG . Each machine is going to run at the voltage needed. There is no such thing as liner should run @ 8 v and a packer or shader should run at 10..that's bogus info. I line at 4 v . And shade at 5 1/2 depending on the machine I'm using and how it is tuned.. the needle configuration..and where on the body I'm tattooing..

    I am so greatful to you thanks buddy I will download games and will make my friends download too, I went to tattoo shop and ask them that why my skin not showing white color n they have no Idea I can fill any color but.not the white :(

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are several reasons why white is harder then other colors. The ingredients to make the white are thicker. I found that if you thin it down a little it will work better. I dip into my white and then dip into my water when I tattoo if the ink is thicker. I use eternal and it is thin enough to work without the water. You also have to use a smaller needle group if you want it to go in easier. I usually stick to 7rl and 7mag. The other problem is that the lighter colors get muttled with the blood and skin while you tattoo. It is harder to see them while you are tattooing. For this reason I slow down my hand speed just a little bit and focus on covering the area better. I really pay attention covering and area before I move on. Then you just have to trust the process worked. If you go back into the area you damage it and then the colors don't come out nicely. It is better to come back and pack in color at a second sitting then jacking up someones skin. I've had tattoos where you can't see the white until it is healed. Orange will look a little red and yellow will look orange. When it heals that is when the colors shine. Also have to make sure your machines are tuned correctly. You can see when a machine is tuned you don't have to struggle getting the color in. It is an easy process. You might also try some short tapered needles. They will pack in color better.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I almost forgot you can do some tricks to help that out. Put a little grey down before you put the white and the white will show up better. You can add a little light blue to the white. That will also help it stand out more. Lighter colors like yellow I sometimes get the darker shades so they will stay in the skin longer. Yellow with a little orange. In this way you put color around the white to make it show up better or add color that you can see easier. Some ink companies actually make white with the blue tint added already. You just don't want to mix that blue tinted white with a color that will throw it off. I save the pure white for mixing and the blue tinted white when it is by itself.

      Yes. You have to listen to your machine to hear if it is running smoothly. You can put it in front of a white background and see if you can see the ghost of the springs. You can check how far your stroke. How much tension do you have on the rear spring. Then you have to test it out and see if it works the way you want it to. I'll try to do a video so you can see how it is done.

    Whats up T.U! I have just recently started to work on my machines and have been studying your videos for quite some time now. My Question is, is it ok if your CPS/Hz and Duty% drop once you start touching the skin.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you push on the armature bar when its running you will see the duty change. You can even see a change in the speed. A little change wouldn't be an issue. A big change would be a problem. The machine is set up to push the needle group at a certain speed. This way it will tattoo properly. If there is a big change then your machine isn't adjusted correctly. You want the machine to stay the run the same throughout the tattoo. Changing how it runs can effect how it tattoos. The machine needs to have a good hit that can be adjusted. More voltage for harder hit and less voltage for softer hit. A good machine will go through that range without sputter. It will run smooth through the range of voltage you give it. Lots of people just say a machine will run at 5.5 volts. A good machine builder will say something like it pushes small needle group at 4.5 volts and hits hard at 6 volts. There is a range there that the artist can play with. Through that range it should still be running at the same duty and speed.

    What cps should a liner and shader be on?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on your hand speed. The machine you are using and how it is set up. How you learned to tattoo. You need to look at all the factors and come up with the conclusion for yourself. Test it out and see what works for you.

      The rear coil doesn't do as much work as the front coil. When you make a smaller coil on the back you don't have to use as much wire. Less wire equals less voltage to run the machine.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Needle depth can be incorrect. The tattoo ink you are using can be too thin or too thick. The tattoo machine might not be hitting hard enough. You have to test these things out or find someone who can work with you. Figure out what the problem is.

    Idk if I missed it somewhere but maybe you can help me with some info...I am going to be re-tuning my machines and always seem to get confused as to what some general settings should be for a color packer, shaded and liner...can you give me some general guidelines for spring tension for these and duty cycles?

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to set up my liners and color packers with 300-400 grams of tension. Shaders will have more tension on them. Shaders and liners have shorter stroke length. Color packer will have 3-4mm stroke. liners run faster around 120+ cps and color packers run slower 90-120cps. I like to leave the duty cycle at 55% duty.

      Tattoo University do you have any videos explaining the difference between a curved magnum set up and a flat may setup?? I have heard the curved are the way to go but not quite understanding why

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just depends on what you are doing and how you like to tattoo. If you are filling in shading and want smooth edges I would use a curved mag. If you are color packing and using the corner of the mag to get details I would use a regular mag. On the curved mag you are really only getting the middle set of needles into the skin, so I use a bigger size. If I was going to use a regular 7 mag I would use a 9 curved mag. With the regular mag you get more coverage with all the needles.

    • @TattooUniversity

      need to tune the machine so it only uses minimum amount of voltage. This way it won't heat up. Possibility that the machine is working to hard.

      if its a coil machine its normal for coil machines to do that..It could be the spring tension changed....which is not as common as the tube getting clogged with ink and blood plasma..but more common is carbon build up on the front spring and contact screw. just clean with some emory cloth and itll run fine again..

      I'm working on a book. A manual on how to tattoo. It is a big project so I'm breaking it down into smaller parts. The first manual will be about stencils. I will make it available on my website as soon as it is finished. It is keeping me busy. If you guys don't see me for a while you shouldn't worry. It just means that I'm working on ways to teach you guys stuff. I have to improve and make adjustments. The channel has a life of its own. I have to adjust as it grows and learn new things. I think making manuals for tattooing will be a good way to explain how things are done. Give people more information. It will give people something to download and look at if they have any questions.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I haven't found a shop that is a good fit for me. My plan is to open up my own private studio. I think tattooing should be a good experience and most of my clients like being tattooed in private. I tattoo older people sometimes and the shop experience is just not right for them. I like to have a place where they can relax and enjoy the experience. In a shop it is open to the world and everyone is in there. It is very noisy and people always checking out what you are doing. Not the atmosphere I'm going for. A lot of times when I'm tattooing someone in private I kick some music on and they fall asleep. That or friends and family come over and they hang out while it's being done. Nothing is rushed and clients get the experience they deserve. Keeps them coming back. Young people and older people. Sometimes I tattoo doctors and people who want to keep these things more private. Those weird people who want tattoos but don't want anyone to see them.

    Why do you need to tune a new machine. It should tuned by maker and he should be able to tune it to the best config.

    • @arzynistic
      @arzynistic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if you buy from a reputable builder who makes customized machines ( and usually is someone who actually does tattoos) they usually are good to go out of the box, the problem is that a lot of new tattoo artists who are just getting started don't have the several hundred dollars to spend on a legitimate customized machine and will instead purchase cheaper machines made by a manufacturer that isn't as concerned about how well the machine runs as they are about turning a profit. Doesn't mean the machines are garbage just means that you'll have to spend the time making sure things are set properly. I think the biggest issues I've seen with the cheap machines are the "one size fits all" springs that you'll find on all the machines whether they're advertised as being a liner, shader or color packer or the springs are just wrong for what you're trying to do period! A lot of the cheap machines can go out of tune almost immediately once you start tattooing which means you have to stop more frequently to make adjustments. I've seen machines where they opted for ALL plastic washers and no metal, or ALL metal no plastic washers, etc. Long story not so short is that you can't and really shouldn't trust that a machine you purchased that isn't from a reputable builder to work properly right out of the box for the job you're planning to do.

    ugh...what did you adjust?.. how did you adjust it???

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those machines were sent to me. They needed to be tuned. I adjusted them so that they worked and then I adjusted the springs so they would have the correct tension. You adjust the speed and duty of the machine. When it is all done you have a machine that runs and does the job it is supposed to do.

    • @TattooUniversity
      @TattooUniversity  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You adjust the springs. The thickness of the springs and the tension on them. I also adjusted the parts of the machine so they were on there correctly.

    • @ThomasWilliams-ii8jl
      @ThomasWilliams-ii8jl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spring Tension Gauge. Liners and color packers take less tension. Shaders take more.
