The Debate on Gen Z’s Work Ethic

- As a whole, Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 -1964, believe they have worked hard, sacrificed, and paid their dues - and that the younger generation is entitled and sits on social media all day, expecting to get everything handed to them. However, Gen Z, those born between 1997 - 2012, blame Baby Boomers for the current state of the environment and the economy. Since 2019, the hashtag #okboomer has been used 3.7 B times on TikTok to describe a Baby Boomer being “out of touch.” Is Gen Z really being coddled, whereas Boomers “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps”? And, how is that affecting their mental health? Dr. Phil discusses these generational differences -- societal values, work ethic, use of technology -- and if these two generations, 50 years apart, are really that different, after all. (21029RR)

Gotta love the fact that the older generation refuses to admit they raised that younger generation
I think the older gen didn't expect things to advance so quickly and weren't taught computers, big disadvantage. The kids kind of had free range! What an explosion social media was....

Back in the days teens and younger adults would learn how to work at fast food places!! Now all you see is 30 & 40 year old migrants working there.
It’s because we work our asses off and can’t afford to live. We are treated like slaves. If one has an education and works 40 plus hours a week, we should be able to afford a car and a house. And I’m not talking about anything fancy.
I thought it was common sense that credit and work experience was earned over time. This new generation thinks its an app they can download. 😂
@@randomxl25 I'm gen z and I have great credit and lots of work experience I make $15.50 an hour. I don't think its asking for too much for just bare minimum stuff that my parents and my eldest sibling got doing less. So idk what you're smoking thinking "iTs aN ApP tHey CaN dOwnLoaD"
Keep dreaming. Many of us older people worked first in starter positions, even with a college degree in hand. College gives you academic education, real life jobs give you experience. Be more humble, learn from real life work experiences and then you will have a chance to do better in the future.
They are delusional.
@@randomxl25 yeah common sense is good and all.
I use 1970 as an example. Average earning was about 17K, across the country. In 2020 that average was about 68k.
The average price of a home in the 70s was roughly 25k. So a full year of work would cover largely 60/70ish compared to the annual earnings.
The average home in 2020 cost 284k. So the average earnings from that year are roughly in the low 20s of percentage for paying that off.
And you understand how an average wage would work right that 50% of people are paid less than that and it typically does slant out of favor from younger people.
So effectively and this is if we're just using the national averages, it is effectively 3 times harder for everyone to buy a house.
And this is just a single type of expense explained like this.
If it was adjusted to the modern inflation that 25k house is estimated to go on the market for 184k.
That 17K, in 2020 would it be the equivalent of being paid 125 k annually.
You old people need to stop exaggerating how well you did anything. You were genuinely paid more than twice as much as we are, even if you took lower salaries.
The average 30-40k annual income of someone young now is the equivalent of living off roughly $4-5k a year which in those times would be less than $400 a month.
As a 21 year old, it’s just hard to find the motivation when I make 17.65/hr 40 hrs a week and cannot get an apartment unless I am with a roommate let alone having to have a good credit score, and other requirements just to spend over 1,000 for rent and utilities every month. And on top of that is I try to get into government help like amha, food stamps, then I automatically make too much with the hours I work. It’s just now you have to find people that will take a chance on you even when you already know your worth and work ethic. I absolutely love my job I’m a phone repair tech but the cost of living now is just unreasonably high and it really sucks because as a young girl I always wanted a family in a decent house, decent yard and be able to do what I need and want for my children, but now we have to really lower our standards which is fine but why were we in a better cost of living in the first place if what we used to have we can’t even provide unless we are barely seeing our families, like I want to see my baby grow up instead of working my life away and then they are moving out. It’s just really sad and stressful to think about.
Am from Australia, I have my own apparent (my third property to be exact) I have not worked in 10 years, am on a dsp pension with which I pay my rent bills and other needs, the systems our governments have in place are not there to help the hard workers😢
@@candyguy775 So you don't work and apparently are a landlord. Not sure what your comment is about.
@Charlotte Coles I never said I was a landlord, when I say property I am talking about rentals... your not a charlotte, your a Karen...
Leilani, You're actually doing incredibly well for only being 21. A lot of people are still in college with a roommate at your age. Don't beat yourself up. I was making $8.75 when I was 21 (10 years ago). Also, unless you literally have to go days without eating due to not even being able to afford a 5$ sandwich, or have kids depending on you, you probably won't get accepted for EBT/food stamps. They're reserved for people who are at risk of not getting any nutrition via lack of food. I fell on hard times myself after getting shot in multiple places, and unfortunately couldn't work so had to get food stamps myself. Hated having to rely on somebody to pay for me to eat, but I was losing a ton of weight from only being able to afford to eat MAYBE once a day. Plus heart problems from malnutrition. There are food pantries you could go to though if you absolutely need to.
@@breezystl777 Thank you😭 that actually means so much to me because I really don’t feel like I am doing enough at all. I know I do enough to get by, but a lot of people have a savings account and it’s just extremely hard for me to save money and it makes me feel so unaccomplished when I hear people have like 12k in their savings around my age while I live paycheck to paycheck. Also, I did want to say I am very sorry to hear about your circumstances you were in. It really sucks the cost of living just keeps getting more and more expensive, at this point it’s better to build a treehouse in the woods and grow your own crops or get a mobile home honestly which I have been thinking about if I could save up the money for it.

@@mwalker3547 Millennials will have a hidden memory unlocked by the time they become bosses and Gen Alpha's enter the work force
They were right.
I don’t think boomers understand how difficult it is to get started in America’s current economy. When they were younger, things were much simpler (and I envy them for that) it’s not that we have no work ethic, we ARE working!! It’s just hard because we have nothing to show for it other than simply surviving. We can’t move out because rent is too high and the housing market is insane. We can’t save large amounts of money because the cost of living is so high. The depression that comes with this often causes people to not want to work. Not because they are lazy, but because of true motivation. Stepping out into a world on fire is extremely anxiety inducing. Please look at the whole picture before accusing and entire generation of people.
Yeah, well it would be nice if people that weren't even born stopped saying how easy and simple it was then. In the 60s, an unmarried woman would have a tough time even getting a credit card. Most families of 6-8 had one car and grew up in a house with one bathroom. We grew a garden to save money, canned, sewed clothes and walked everywhere. Yes, shockingly MANY mothers also had to have paid jobs. Kids actually had regular chores often without an allowance. Young men turning 18 were forced into the draft to fight an illegitimate war. Oh yeah, there were also student loans and most kids' parents DID NOT pay for college. Everyone had roommates and struggled with rent and costs, believe me- it was not easy. Try buying a house with 18 percent mortgage rates like in the early 80s. These struggles are not new or unique. It has always been hard for average-earning people to save for a down payment. Very hard.
@@lizze490why is the gap of home ownership so big? You think it’s mostly laziness or what?
@@amdg01007You obviously didn't read my comment- it's ALWAYS been hard- you're naively believing a lie that it was easier. It's still hard now not just for younger people but for EVERYONE.
And you don't seem to understand how difficult it was for a BLACK MALE BOOMER to even eat in the same restaurant as your parents in 1963. We also couldn't get a house (discrimination), vote (we were shot, or hanged or lynched), get adequate education (ever hear of Brown vs. the Board of Education in 1954)? You paint your complaints with a wide brushstroke, tarring over the plight of Blacks in 1956, who had a WAY harder time than you (and it was your grandfathers and grandmothers and fathers and mothers who did this). So, realign your criticism of BOOMERS, because many of us are Black and we didn't get diddly in that era.
Its called an entry level job because nobody gets hired as managers or CEO. It takes years to get promoted. Ever hear your grandparents say how they would walk to work and work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week? Actually talk to your parents. 100% they will say how they spent years gaining experience, making minimum wage, and getting crapped on at work for decades. Its takes years to build skills, gain a reputation, and a work history. Gen z will not put in the work.
They said the same when I was younger. (Gen Y Millennial)
Every older generation says the same thing about the younger ones. It’s a repetitive cycle to think that way. I don’t think it’s a new or unique way of thinking

I have 3 years of mental health crisis experience under my belt and a degree in family studies. I'm a licensed social worker and I'm 1 year away from an MSW and added licensure to be a therapist. I make $15-$17 because that's what Medicaid/Medicare pays for my line of work in my state. I work full time and it's honestly not enough. With inflation since COVID going up 40% where I live, you need to make $24 to live comfortably now. The fast food restaurant that I live nearby pays $14.40 starting out. I've been really angry with the economical situation. Back in the 80`s people with bachelor's degrees could afford to make a good living. Now people can't. My sister also recently got her bachelor's in law and constitutional studies and she makes just a little more than I do. Same with my friend with a degree in computer science. There are very few growth opportunities for gen z and millennials. We are also seeing a lot of 40 year old + people going back to school and taking our starter positions at companies because they would rather hire older people due to the stigma around millennials and gen z. So not only are we competing against our age group for work, but the older generation too. We are broke, angry, in debt, and the song "Allen Town" really is hitting our vibe. Sometimes I'm so upset after all this work that I don't want to show up, because what's the point?
Takes me back to the early 1980s and the recession that started in the late 1970s. No jobs because there weren't enough for all of us in the recession. It was tough. Persistence, and the absolute fact that economic conditions do change, won the day...finally.

This was so measured and reasonable
Majority of the workers i meet are pretty worthless and just there to collect the paycheck. Younger PPL seem worse but I see it in some older PPL as well.
If the paycheck looks good, people wanna keep their jobs more and will do more. I wouldnt be to passionate about a job that pays bad or just moderately well...when you sacrifice life time, nerves and energy to make someone else richer, you want a piece of the cake.
The problem is it's really hard to get your foot in the door, I have a degree, I shouldn't have to settle for anything less.
Everyone else has a degree too, what should they settle for?
@andywinter2496 yes but my degree is in STEMM, not an arts degree or a communications degree. They should settle for less because they didn't go the distance like I did.
@@senister14 ok big whoop. My associates degree is also in STEMM. I made 12 bucks an hour starting out as an intern. I was a bartender at night to survive. Took about 3 years to get to 60k then I just kept climbing. Paid my dues. You'll get there.
Hot take, call all the companies you think might hire you. Find out who is a mgr in those departments. Shoot them an email, say hey dawg, I'd like to work for some experience, I know you probably don't have any projects I could do right now but would you mind if I checked in every 2 weeks? I'll write hello worlds, normalize some data, stack boxes, heck I'll even wash your car if you can bring me on.
Then follow up every 2 weeks try to get that as a face to face teams/zoom call. If you're not hired as at least an intern in 3 meetings (6 weeks) I'd eat my shorts.
It is always a challenge to get your foot in the door. The one thing I can tell you is what my father said to me is what is your purple cow. I understand that this generation wants more than what they're getting. They're working too many hours and not making enough money.
One important aspect to this math equation, though, is their spousal relationships. Even older generations haven't been able to live off one income for quite some time now. But many got married and they stayed married. Thats how many were able to afford those homes and those cars. There was dual income for a number of years, and if they didn't divorce, then you didn't lose those assets.
You want to stay in poverty? Never have a stable long-term relationship. Have children and then get divorced. Those things will keep you poor.
I was working at an Indian casino and the Jen series have absolutely no respect for their superiors whatsoever, spend all the time on the phone or chatting with each other, have no initiative at all, play the victim card, don't even bother to call in they just don't show up, they're pretty awful
What pisses me off is not even the work, I have three jobs so and I’m gone 16hrs a day and only one day off which is dependent on if my boss calls me or not from one of my jobs. I have the work ethic, ITS THE BS SYSTEM that REFUSES TO HELP! You would expect them to at least help you out, but because of your salary all of the sudden that goes STRAIGHT OUT THE WINDOW! I’m currently in default with my student loan debt that’s over 150k and that includes other bills such as rent, gas, car insurance etc. It took me 8 months to find ONE decent job and that lined up with what I went to school for. You suffer, pay your bills and when there are resources that are in placed you get DENIED, “oh you make so much money, why can’t you afford it?” But they help illegals willingly and people who are drug addicts and put them on welfare and they even know that they leech off the system. Look at the projects near my home, there’s people driving Mercedes and BMWs yet they live in a literal shithole. Make that make sense 🤨
The 3 queers in the front row need some help. They are a perfect example of how it is safe to lump the vast majority of them into one group
the problem is people always chasing money, not everything is or even should be about money. Yet it is. This is why things are not evolving the way they should.

Honestly, this system’s long since been broken. The idea is to get a job and work for the cash flow while seeking a better paying job and relevant training/education. Climb the ladder.
Work or dont. Just dont expect anything sitting on your butt at home.
You’re acting like you can just walk into business and ask to be hired.
It's insane to me that you all spend so much time on your phones. Like. In addition to watching TV, using computers. Will I be the last upright man on earth?... surrounded by hunchbacks?
It’s time for the Gen X and boomers to start takingresponsibility. They created this! They are the ones who said, “everyone wins. You don’t have to work for a trophy. You get a prize anyway.” They have created this entitlement. 💯
No, it is the millennials who raised them with participation trophies.
@@TOhara-eb2lp I’m a millennial and I have 2 gen Z kids. I agree it was happening during their generation but it started with the Gen X parents even before then. I was wrong to blame the boomers, they didn’t have anything to do with it.
Um no, I'm Gen X (very beginning of Gen X) I raised two sons and not one time did I tell them they should get a trophy for just participating. What they got was quite the opposite so be careful who you try to throw under the bus.
@@libbybarrett1268 OK so you’re an older Gen X. People born in the 80s and later have started this trend with their children. this includes my generation as well. I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus. Not every single person is going to have characteristics of their generation.
Boomer worked very hard. And did not complain
life is not easy people
Wake up from your fantasy world.
Right
"boomers did not complain"
The difference between the Boomers and Millenials and Gen Zs (and Gen Alpha soon)
Is that you guys didn't have internet so you didn't hear that much complaints apart from gossips between the Karens and Susans
Now with Social Media literally anyone can complain and be read online. That's why there's "more" complaining nowadays

Are they all failing? What kind of question is that. Your in class, people are giving their time to speak you give them your attention and respect, that shows you right their that guy with the beard and make up is the problem,, what a stupid question
“they all expect to get As” ……. but you’re the one giving into that expectation dude. grade inflation is done by boomers, not gen z
It’s such BS. Growing up if you got an F you deserved it…or got any grade you deserved and didn’t have mommy screaming at the teacher.
@@TOhara-eb2lp 💯 I’m a teacher I see this a lot. Kids are smart. They know if they can get their parents on their side, the rest is a breeze.
@@dkruse01 Are they really that smart? When I was in school we had smart kids and dumb kids. I just wonder if they have become better at being more clever and manipulative with their Millennial participation trophy getting parents.
Main issues is that gen z is all hyper aware we are going to probably die within the next 30 years
They said similar stuff in the 1960’s.
Everyone could be dead in the next year. That is beyond any regular person’s control.
Doesn’t mean you don’t operate as if the world will keep going or that you won’t need a roof over your head. Making sure you have that is within your control.

Show up on time, do your job, and stay off TikTok during work hours. There are no safe spaces so STFU and get to work. If you can do that then congrats, you're an adult and employable. If you can't do that, you might be Gen Z.
the problem with nearly everything is to get what you want>must have tons of money no money>nothing you want comes to you. If people weren't so greedy, society would be better.
The amount of days/weeks I've shown up to work sick..... you'd be surprised. We're talking about me vomiting in the bathroom and then going back into the classroom.
Btw, I work as a paraprofessional.
Is that who they pick to speak on behalf of their generation? 😂 you got to be kidding me.
The reality is that for the amount of time you invest you don’t get much money, so a lot of people prefer to have more time
why is it that not many people of the last two generations will serve in the regular military or even the reserves? after one year of service, you receive 36 months of paid college or technical school tuition and a per diem monthly stipend. That's right and it's free and return for your service to our nation and our citizens. Why is it all about you you think any generation had it easier than any other? I was on my own at 18 years old and it was sink or swim. Could not go home for help. If I went without I went without. Some of the same people claiming they don't make enough money or having enough to live comfortably seem to always have the latest smart phone and or, Starbucks, coffee, etc. Try doing something for others instead of just yourself. So tired of listening to you complain! Man up and work hard or start your own business, and stop asking the rest of us to pay for your college tuition. I have always wanted to work really hard for a good life. Especially in school. Though I’m scared that I’ll be let down by my efforts in the late future, from hearing and reading all these articles and tweets makes me loose hope in my dream of doing so. Many comments don’t help out either, I’ve been trying to find a job since I turned 14, just to get a head start. These people commenting about how horribly we do just makes me feel I’m not good enough to even live a good life. I know some of these commenters may be shown only the “delusional” side of Gen Z, but man at least don’t compare yourself a to them. Let’s be real for a moment, it is in a way, harder to have a good way of living in today’s economy. I am so scared to grow up, I’m so scared to fail in life man. Though I can’t cry because it’s “life”, and I need to grow up. It’s okay to be angry and it’s okay to be worried, but I try to not to let these get into my head. I really can’t tell you how afraid I am. I am afraid of not living up to the older generations expectations.

I've noticed this generation in america does nothing but whine and complain
Yeah, they’re really sensitive about every tiny thing and super hypocritical. They demand respect for doing nothing. They’re arrogant and make the world a pain for everyone else. I hate Boomers.
I work with Gen-Z people. Many are very hard working and go beyond the call of duty. They will take overtime shifts if offered. They also do an excellent job performance. Then there are others who are high maintenance to have as employees. They call in "sick", check their phones, do minimal work for maximum pay, want to go full time immediately and bypass senior workers, are concerned about how work tasks "make them feel", and cannot communicate properly if there are work problems. They will also do a half-baked job at work tasks when they were trained otherwise, and then not take accountability when caught.

Yup they're gaslighting people a lot older than they are that they are not lazy, but older people see what they see and they just aren't that stupid.
Some of us are certainly lazy, but to say it's all gen z is actually very wrong and ageist.

So Walgreens fires the manager who’s looking for good Work just fired for it so they don’t get the hot water so now they’ll hire Genzie or millennial or some deadbeat and when I go to the store, I can’t get help because they are around the corner on their phone And they ain’t got time to help me that makes a lot of sense that makes me want to go to Walgreens so maybe I won’t go and more people will feel like me and they won’t go and then there will be no more Walgreens because they were too busy on their phonebecause that’s what they deserve
I have to make a correction it wasn’t Walgreens. It was dollar tree that manager was in the right.
They were just a bunch of cry, baby adults. They were not raised right? They were neglected. They were not loved they are resisting their weak they will die
Change your habits and you won’t stereotype yourselves. It’s not rocket science.
Habits are not enough to make ends meet
Did you just ask Gen Z to change their habits to avoid being stereotyped? Do you understand the definition of a stereotype?
That’s what I say about the blacks. Quit holding up 7-11 and pull your pants up and you won’t be stereotyped. Pretty simple logic.
And a lot of us were raised on only technology. And that's all we know so the world is very scary to us because it's very unfamiliar
having a good work ethic is useless and only gets you taken advantage of
Work ethic and slave ethic are two different things. Gen Z can see this. Boomers can't.
Well, the guy that sitting across him wearing earrings and makeup.Yeah I worry about him
Look up gen z, their self description says in their definition that they are better.. believe what you read! Lmfao
Like Boomers aren’t arrogant. They complain how people are pussies and then complain when they see “delinquents doing stunts”. They complain about everything being too complicated without taking even two seconds to attempt to understand things. They say younger generations are lazy when they ruined the economy to make it so you can’t get a minimum wage job with 2 degrees. They want to drag the world down as they die out.
Many Gen Zer's live at home with both parents especially girls so they face no threat if they walk out on their job, that's why many businesses will not hire women under age 30 for paying jobs
I usually type lecture notes on my phone.
OK, so Dollar tree fire to the manager, but the boyfriend can stand there and talk to the girlfriend while she’s working. Something happens in there bad robbery theft, whatever and then the manager still gets blamed for letting the boyfriend stand there the manager was in the right to do that, try again. This makes no sense.
What's your definition of a deadbeat ? To the greyhaired lady boomer saying ' I don't like labels of any kind' then calls people deadbeats.
