      I just finished watching the last episode yesterday & loved the entire Season. I was worried that it would be difficult for Netflix to adapt 60 half hour anime episodes into just 8 hour long live action episodes, but this is definitely 1 of the best anime adaptations ever, & it does the manga & anime proud.

    Actually, there's symbolism in the moment Luffy put his hat on Nami. The straw hat is Luffy's treasure and he doesn't let anyone touch it. Putting it on Nami is his way of saying that he trusts Nami and she is his friend

    • @CluelessCarter
      @CluelessCarter ปีที่แล้ว +68

      it's much more clear that that was intent behind luffy giving his hat to nami in the anime/manga. But in the live action it feels more random since so much context is being cut bc of time constraints in a 8 episode season. The emotional moments are harder to capture here since the show is running against a clock and has to keep moving

    • @el-dawn
      @el-dawn ปีที่แล้ว +172

      @@CluelessCarter I feel like it's pretty well hinted in the live action too with the multiple scenes of Luffy not wanting other people to touch the hat, reaching for it instead of the map, calling it his treasure, etc. Not to mention that Nami went from messing with the hat at the start to Luffy 'giving' his literal treasure to Nami in this ep. But I can def understand why not a lot of people can 'see' that just like you said, because it was elaborated better in the manga and anime :D

    • @blurryface5744
      @blurryface5744 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@el-dawn Yeah it was definitely clearer in the anime because when luffy gave the hat to nami she remembered the time luffy got angry at someone else for touching his hat. I don't know why they decided to cut that out of the live action.

    The reason she trusts Arlong is that, within his crew, they're bound by a rule not to lie about money. This is briefly mentioned during the poker game, but it's more prominently highlighted in the manga. As for the hat transfer, it's symbolic. Luffy can indeed fight with his hat on, but giving it to her is a sign of trust. He wouldn't let someone he doesn't trust handle his treasured hat. The gesture also serves as a promise, mirroring the one he made to Shanks: 'I'll deal with Arlong, and once you're free, you'll return my hat to me. Nami's backstory always gets to me and Emily Rudd was perfect in the help me scene.

    • @agenttheater5

      I particularly love the way the music and camera carries us out to them. First Luffy says he'll help (closeup w/low music), then he screams it (mid shot with crescendo), then we get an deep bass answer to the crescendo with a wide shot of all the crew.
      It starts with Luffy forgiving her, then the entire crew. All told with wonderful cinematography and music.

    This event was what sold the anime to me many years ago when I saw it. There is no dialogue but you get so much from Luffy giving Nami his hat. He values the hat beyond anything else, it's his "treasure" and he feels the same way about his crew. Even after Nami betrayed them, told them to leave and they learned about her past he still valued her enough to place the most precious thing to him on her head because she is that precious and he trusts her.
    There were some things from that arc that didn't make the cut that I wish did because it shows the turmoil that Nami is going through the whole time with wanting to free her village but also wanting to be with the Straw Hats because she started having fun for the first time in her life after years of being a captive slave to Arlong. Her loyalty being questioned when Usopp confronting her and her stabbing him to prove her loyalty then it's revealed she stabbed her own hand to make it look like she stabbed Usopp and it was her blood on him being one scene I wish they kept.

    Something they cut out of the live action was after Helmeppo stomped on Rika's (the little girl) riceballs and made fun of her in episode 1. He reported it to his dad and Morgan's first response was to ask him if he killed her. Helmeppo was horrified and responded "o-of course not. she's just a little girl..." Then Morgan commands his marines to go into town and execute her. Helmeppo was a massive jerk but mostly puts on airs and there is a line that he won't cross. It's nice seeing his redemption.

    You tend to catch onto this once you start really watching One Piece that every character has something that pushed them into becoming who they are now, whether that is a pirate, marine, or something else and that thing tends to be tragedy. Nami showcases that very well, since her tragedy is what fuels her personality as an adult. .

    There are some differences with the original material. The largest is that the village and Nojiko are actually aware of what Nami works on, but they don't tell her so she isn't burdened with the responsibility she took on willingly, giving her the option to walk if/when she finally realizes she cannot collect the money. But Nami is tough, and having the money taken causes her to resolve to steal it all again. The problem is the villagers, who are done with seeing Nami hurt and struggle, and decide to march on Arlong Park for a final showdown that Nami knows they cannot win. She cannot stop them, she cannot defeat Arlong, and she is finally broken. That is where her utter despair comes from initially, knowing that the people she treasures most are about to be lost.
    As she asks him to protect her treasure, he gives her his treasure that he doesn't usually let people touch, making the request about friends having each others backs rather than him being a hero who saves the day during her moment of weakness with some sort of debt to hold her back. This contrasts with Arlong's crew who have financial honesty as a key aspect of their bottom line, which is why Nami was able to trust him to keep to his deal for over a decade as she gathered the money. Unfortunately for her, she's a human, and to Arlong, they can never be equals to fishmen.

    The hat on Nami's head is iconic. It has so much depth, from it symbolizing that Nami IS an Strawhat and therefore under the protection of the Luffy and the crew.
    It is a well written seen that shows a vow between people without words needing to be said. It is similar to feudal contracts or wedding vows. some cultures have the men put something of their house/family such banner/cloak or family crest on the bride symbolizing that she is now part of the new household and under it's protection.
    One Piece does this in a platonic way, and Nami returns to protection to the others, so it is a mutual protection, she was just in a really bad spot in this instance.
    The anime nailed the scene as well, and Nami's Japanese voice actor killed. Her performance is just as haunting at the 10th viewing as it was the 1st.

Pretty great acting and attention to details.

    i believe watch the backstory episodes so you can do comparison episodes then if you want cover the fillers. there are a lot.
    but doing a comparison you will find Oda gives old fans expansion to characters.
    example Nami’s mom.
    anime says she was a marine.
    In live action we seen it.
    I have a step daughter, but I treat her as my own. so i don’t call her my step but my daughter.
    So yes I would never deny saying she is my child either.

    Edit: Clearing this up, not as strong as Mihawk, but at his rank. There is a lot of variation in strength among the Warlords, and Mihawk is among the strongest.
