- I put higher voltage on more toys primarily using a 0-30V bench power supply. But some toys required even more voltage to die! Used a Variac with a full bridge rectifier (input 230V) when I needed more than 30V.

Cskirt, can you pin this? Kool Duderino and I had the same thought. A capacitor or resistor on the laughing dog toy's board must have gradually failed, causing the oscillator circuit for the audio chip's playback to increase its frequency, which then damaged the audio IC. It must've also bypassed the motor controller, explaining the lack of movement, though that might be incorrect, given that the motor turned back on at 8.5 volts. Another tid bit: the audio IC fully died at 8.5 volts as well.
Yea I found that part interesting and I'm glad I got that on video.
It somehow started playing the audio as soon as I turned on the power, without pressing the switch.
I opened it up to see what happened but unfortunately the pcb just consists of a big black blob, one motor controller (TC118S I think, it got a big hole in it), and two small electrolytic capacitors between the power rails and motor.
Everything just connects to the chip-on-board including the switch.
Old toys are much more fun when you can manipulate the audio circuit 🙂

Fun fact: In the nerf blaster modding community, we usually over-volt nerf blasters because we try to get as much range out of them as we can when we have nerf battles, although, we usually replace the motors so they don't immediately get killed, because we usually use lithium-manganese, or lithium-ion batteries, which are around 2.4 to 3.1 volts in strength each.
I tried getting in to the motors to replace them, but I gave up after a few attempts. It was not as easy as taking the screws out, those things are really glued/welded shut! 😂

You should try running toys on AC if they're not supposed to. If the toy runs on AC though, run it on DC.
Could try on some scrap toy to see what happens, but in theory the control board would quickly fry, DC motors can often run on AC but would produce less torque
Only universal motors. Permanent magnet motors won't run on AC.
