  • Have a C5 Corvette with a non lit or dim HVAC control display? In this video I show the repair of the AC controller in a 1997 C5 corvette. I replace the background lights and the reflowed the resistors for the screen. Easy repair for anyone who can solder.

The nob for the passenger side. At least the resistance value when positioned at center so it can be controlled by the driver side. ( passenger side always blows cold)

I already sent it back to the mechanics but compare the parts numbers on the 2 they should be same just measure off the driver side. I've never messed with the knobs on these are they pots or encoders?

Been a minute since I had mine apart. I'd say pot's. I remember 3 white wires to the unit..
Thanks for the input and the videos. I'll reference the other side and go from there.

92 Bonneville radio. I only have left front speaker. I think it is a Bose radio with cassette.

Good stuff !! I like seeing you showing the repairs of other components, especially on cars and trucks. I am sure it will wake up a lot of mechanics out there to the fact they can take things apart and fix them without swapping parts. Even if they take the part home with them after they have swapped a customers part out, just to see whats inside and even attempt to at least do solder for the experience. They will be amazed at how many components will actually be repaired. GM trucks in the late 80's into the late 90's had solder joint failure on the wiper motor control board. It had a recall for a free replacement for a while. I did a resolder on a couple of those for fleet vehicles and after a year it happened again. I talked to my (genius) neighbor and he suggested adding a short piece of 14 gauge wire leaving the insulation on it, just to act as a heat sink. So I added 2" long one to the + side and one to the - side and that same board lasted about 6 years that I know of (vehicle was replaced). There are quit a few wiper control boards out there with those two extra wires installed. A lot of components come apart without destroying them and most of the time you can see the burned part or just try resolder.

Not only that imagine how much better that is for the local economy. if the mechanic fixes it than he gets 100% of the money and can do it at a lower cost to the client. if he buys a part from a big box store that money is exported to the company HQ and the mechanic only makes a small % while costing more to the client.

@@FixedUntilBroken I started as a mechanic as a part time after school employee at a gas station about a mile from my High School in 73'. We removed and rebuilt starters and alternators on the bench. Even relined brake shoes and arched them to fit the drums. We took relays and window switches and other electrical items apart and repaired them. It was the same way up until around 78' or so. That's when it became parts swapping. In the early 80's I noticed the younger guys coming in had no idea how a simple switch worked. They would test it and kind of know what to expect but had no idea how it did it. It was confusing to me to see this and I used to tell them to take the old switch home and tear it apart and check out how it works. Then, sometime in the 80's, ASE started and if the journeyman mechanic didn't have that ASE patch on his uniform he was basically unemployable. Parts swappers became the norm and the old guy in the shop became an instructor or a fireman. Every time an ASE guy was in a jam or broke a bolt or damaged something the old guy would be there to solve the problem. Not many old guys left. (CWTSTCFASE)

@@Ed70Nova427 yeah corporate jobs don't want free thinkers because then that employee will become competition one day(either for the guy hirings job or at another company).
So dealerships and chain repair shops want paper not skill. it's just funny how the non chain/dealers follow.
I'm not a mechanic and never have been so I don't know what's involved in the training

    Nice work!
Thank you for showing it can be powered on the bench. I wasn’t sure if Class 2 wake-up was required on this series.

Cool video, love the tools you have. Soldier wick, and that mat. Great stuff. I have a 97' with an AC problem. Sometimes removing the fuse and re installing it fixes it.

ThankYou for this great video. I need to send my 2004 climate control in as lifts are barely visible at night. Everything works properly, just can’t see numbers well in daylight. How much is the cost to do a complete job as you have done in this video?. I believe I can remove from car ,but not to sure of my soldering skills.

Any luck getting the incandescent bulbs to light (for testing) while it’s on the bench?

This one looks easier than the one with the 2 sliders in the middle of it.

Yeah it's a shame the 03-07 gmt 800 digital ac controller isn't built like this. It's nice not having to take the knobs off.
