While often called the "Poor Man's Atlas", I think the inverse is a more accurate statement. Recall the Atlas was designed to General Kerensky's specifications; recall that General Kerensky drives an Orion. The fearsome Atlas, the 100-ton wall of death, is really just a bigger, meaner Orion.

It's also important to highlight that the Orion is one of the easiest 'mechs to work on, and that technicians find it spacious and simple to access. A 'mech spending less time in a repair bay is a 'mech spending more time pounding opponents into the ground.

The Orion has that wonderful "Junkyard" look to it, like it was put together out of old boxes and tubes. That was especially the case when I first saw it in Mechwarrior 3. I remember reading the game's booklet as a kid, talking about how old the mech is. I always thought it stood out as an old reliable piece of technology from a bygone age.

The Orion is an example of when trying to make something like a multi role fighter actually went right. Jack of all trades, but master of armor. Having all that armor without having to sacrificing speed and having a decent weapons package is what allowed it to be able to actually be a real jack of all trades without the drawbacks.

Agreed, a swiss army knife can do a lot of things, but it doesn't accel at any one task, it's perfect for when you only have to use that tool for a small task, but if you need to cut a lot of something, you get a proper knife. This is why a lot of general purpose mechs feel lackluster to pilot in the video games compared to mechs dedicated to that role. A lot of mechs can do it all, few can do it well.

@@brianhenry152 There is something actually noble about it's destruction; Theodore had been given command of the Legion of Vega (effectively the dumping ground for the DCMS) by his father in an effort to shame him into compliance.
Theodore however, took it as an opportunity to prove his worth and vindicate his vision of a new military for the Combine, honing those troops to be the very best they could be.
When the 4th succession war broke out the legion found itself facing off the Skye Rangers, troops who were better equipped (and better trained then most Lyrans) and those troops came looking to kill or capture the heir to the dragon but Theodore (who very much wanted to stand and fight against the hard odds arrayed against him) found his men unwilling to let that happen and spirited him away on a dropship that had been stashed nearby.
When the Rangers rushed in to fight the Orion they found it piloted by one of the first soldiers that had questioned Theodore on his arrival, laughing at the overwhelming forces that had come against him because even though he would die he knew his commander would live.
The losses and the defeats that the Combine experienced in the 4th succession war would light a fire in Theodore's heart and inspire him to ensure that the Combine would never give an inch to the emergent Federated commonwealth, and if it hadn't been for one old battlemech he likely would have failed in doing so.

@@guitarhausdoesntknowwhatac3285 LOL. House Kurita were the silent lap dogs of the Usurper. From their illegal annexation of former Hegemony worlds liberated by the SLDF to the fact that they were the last of the Great Houses to offer any viable assistance to General Kerensky, Kurita proved time and again they were not to be trusted. Once Kerensky had left, Kurita continued Amaris' legacy by illegally claiming right of First Lord (as if anyone with an ounce of integrity would support them), thereby kicking off the Succession Wars in which their bloodthirsty conduct would claim the lives of countless innocent and defenseless civilians on Eblar and Kentares IV. Their duplicitous nature would extend towards not only their neighbors, but to numerous mercenary units as well.
The fact that Kurita acquired such a noble symbol of the SLDF is a slap in the face of the greatest hero the setting ever had. It saddens me greatly that Kerensky's heirs did not burn the Combine to cinders. They would have been doing the Inner Sphere at large a service.

3.Literally everyone was making the claim to first lord.
      4. Yes I keep forgetting how much more noble the rest of the Inner sphere is; Money grubbing lyrans more concerned with breeding then ability, Cappellans with their outright slave caste, Free worlds league that is occasionally able to function as a state, and oh so racist suns.

The Orion is my favorite heavy mech in Battletech. It's tough, low heat, easy to upgrade, and can serve in almost any role. The 1M generated many variants, ranging from light gauss toting slugthrowers to Artemis equipped LRM-20s and 6 racks, and much more. Anyone looking for a roomy unit to modify will love the Orion
The definitive Orion variant, other then Kerensky's version, in my opinion is the 2M. Created in 3063, it carries a Gauss Rifle, an LRM-15 with Artemis, 3 Medium Pulse Lasers, Endo Steel, 12.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor, with 2 tons of LRM and Gauss ammo. It only carries CASE in the left torso, but the Gauss exploding isn't an insta kill for the mech, so I get why they CASED the LRM ammo instead. For 1828 BV, you have an absolutely nasty brawler capable of taking on anything in its weight class, and it's easy to repair and manufacture. Marauders may look pretty, but Orions win wars. It's one of the few reasons why the purple bird still flies over Atreus to this day.

    2. Theodore Kurita, best Coordinator of House Kurita. According to canon, a cousin of Theodore’s found an Orion in a SLDF depot that was found and verified to belonged to Alexander Kerensky when the SLDF fled Inner Sphere. He won many battles in this machine.

It is one of the few mechs that can shrug off hits from my Marauder's heavy rifle in MW 5 so I have to respect it's durability but I got to dock points off for only having the stock ten heatsinks.

Much as I enjoy Tex Talks BattleTech, these smaller, quicker videos, laser focused on the 'Mech itself and what makes it work (or not), are in their way much better. Aside from having a much greater variety of content and information to help those new to BattleTech get a handle on what 'Mechs do what and how, it's nice for veterans to hear different perspectives and re-evaluate machines that may not seem great at first glance, but in the right role or circumstance can shine. This series has been a blast to watch, and very informative as well! I consider myself a very light Battletech fan. This being primarily because I've never gotten to play the tabletop game nor have I had much experience with it beyond MWO, MW5, and the Mechassault games (Namely MA1). That said, it's always been a universe that's fascinated me and I love being able to delve a bit deeper into the details behind it, usually through videos like this.
As for where the series should go, I don't think I'm the right person to give an answer, as I don't know all the lengths to which it could go. I do know that the coverage of the 'mechs, vehicles and weapon systems especially interest me, although I suspect that's due more to my previously mentioned experience being limited toward those things specifically. I will just say that you've consistently captured my attention with these, and I'm very much excited for whatever comes next!

The Orion is a solid heavy workhorse of a mech. Not quite as versatile as the Thunderbolt but a bit more durable.
Unfortunately the low number of heat sinks and the large ammo load undermines it´s otherwise good defenses.
The issue with only 10 heat sinks is that the mech always operates on the edge of overheating.
If anything goes wrong, e.g. a lucky engine hit or a hit by a heat inflicting weapon, things can go south for this mech very quickly.
Once the Orion builds up heat it is very hard to cool down again.
While an overheated P-Hawk still can jump away, an overheated Orion cannot.
Since this issue is well known, experienced players will try to take out the Orion through the heat scale rather than chewing through the massive armor.

This is the standard for heavy mechs. This is the template heavy mech. Speed is average at 4/6. Firepower is significant at long range, going to ... overheating if the pilot isn't conservative. Some people would say the AC10 shouldn't be used in short range engagements. Why? You'd rather do less damage when the opponent gets close? For the same heat? You hammer the AC10 and the 2 medium lasers until you get a breach then you drop one weapon to pick up the SRM4 to help you find that gap more often. Or you accept some heat gain for added firepower. The problem with that is losing heat isn't fast with only the base 10 heat sinks to work with. Sure this mech has heat efficient weapons, but it takes more restraint to cool this mech once it gets hot.
It also has 3 different ammo based systems. The Orion not only can't afford to run too hot to avoid ammo explosions. It also has an endurance problem. 20 rounds may sound like a lot, but the truth is you need to fire the AC10 every opportunity you get to. You can't afford not to use it. That 20 ammo might hold you through a fight, or it might not. For the same weight as the AC10 and its 2 tons of ammo, you could have a PPC and 7 heat sinks. Same damage, PPC has better range and with 7 heat sinks the same heat load. It also introduces a minimum range, but in that minimum range you can afford to use both medium lasers and the SRM without worrying about heat.
I don't think the Orion is a particularly good heavy mech. I don't think its particularly bad either. I think it is the bar where you measure other mechs in its class. The Orion is a difficult bar to measure up to. A lot of mechs don't.

    • @BigRed40TECH
      @BigRed40TECH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't look at it from the perspective of if its a good mech in the sense of, could I customize something to be better, sure I could. I think it's a good mech because it can fight a WHM, or a MAD during its time, and reasonably come out on top, despite them having PPC's. :)

    • @Chris_Sizemore
      @Chris_Sizemore ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@BigRed40TECH When I call something a bar to be measured by, I'm not saying to judge variants of the same mech. I'm saying measure other heavy and assault mechs against the base Orion.

The Orion is usually eclipsed by mechs like the Marauder and the Warhammer. It's not the easiest mech to pilot, especially at short range the temptation to run hot is great and can cause some problems for those who think they can hammer away at enemy mechs very quickly by running a huge heat tab they may not be able to pay. But it's quite a beast that can go toe to toe with anything short of the biggest, most powerful Assault mechs.
It comes with two main weapons a good short range package and pretty solid armour. It's not invincible and it can run hot if not careful, but if you are on a budget and can't afford that Battlemaster or Stalker, you may want to consider an Orion.

@@BigRed40TECH The Marauder has one advantage, it can do some serious damage at range whereas the Orion has a window of 7-15 hexes for best effect. Heat management on the Warhammer consists of twin PPCs and AC alternated with one PPC and AC for maximum effect, but losing one MP every other turn. The Orion has a solid three ton armour advantage which on average means the Marauder will start to suffer sooner. At closer ranges the Orion still has a big useful punch, but must use its heat burden wisely and for maximum effect you need to rush the Marauder and stay inside the 3 hex minimum range.
Both are vulnerable in the side torso. Marauder has thinner armour and ammo in the LT. The Orion has lots of ammo in both and has thicker armour. If we assume some good rolls, a Marauder needs three PPC shots to open up the ammo, but has no crit seekers. The Orion needs a good LRM and AC/10 shot to breach the Marauder and has a crit seeker.
Marauder can win at range, but it's a tricky game, Orion can just close in and hammer away and hope it can expose the ammo or knock out a laser when up close.
Personally I'd get a Grasshopper or an Awesome against an Orion.
