BATTLETECH: The Dervish

  • There is no #Dervish quite like a whirling Dervish. Except one covered in missiles and backed up by high-powered lasers.
A lot of mechs don't get the credit, I feel, they deserve in #Battletech and #Mechwarrior Despite my rather harsh takes on some designs, such as the #Jagermech / #Urbanmech / #Charger, I believe most units have a real opportunity to prove themselves on the field. For too long the Dervish has been left to languish, clearly unloved despite its impressive strengths.
Today, we're going to talk about the #FederatedSuns fighter that can keep up with mobile units across any kind of terrain, and deliver long-range hammerblows on the enemies that the #AFFS have to fight.
#Capellans and #Kuritans beware! The Dervish is has arrived!

The design of the dervish is such that it did its job so well at being a medium mech and doing what a medium mech does so well that it gets overlooked for the flashier and cooler designs. Its the epitome of a workhorse design. It was so well put together at its creation is the reason why there are so few variants, its hard to improve on what is already done so well. I mean the put XL engines in it as an upgrade, but does that really improve it? Or does that make it a tad weaker?. The OG helm core upgrade is prob the best upgrade keeping the standard engine but just making what it already did well that much better.

The only straight upgrade I can actually think of is switching to clan tech...and that's a fairly expensive prospect. Granted, the weight and space savings alone massive expand the options for equipment without adding any weaknesses and you could even go so far as to exchange the SRM2s for SRM6s and the medium lasers for medium pulse lasers. Changing to double heatsinks helps solve the issues of running hot, more so if clan doubles are used. There should be just barely enough room to add ferro-fibrous armor and any excess space left could be used for additional armor or upgrading the engine or jumpjets.
Or you could go absolutely psycho with the variant with 6 missile hard points, fill them all up with SRM6s _(for and SRM36!)_ and delete anything that dares walk around with less than full armor.

The long forgotten fourth member of the 55-ton Trinity. I prefer the Trebuchet for firepower, but the Dervish can dish out more smaller, servings of "drop dead"- split the difference. It is also one of the very few TRO3050 upgrades that is worth a bucket of spit. And I do love the fluff from the origional 3025, with a lance of Devishes hiding in the river and playing Marco Polo with the enemy all night

People are not used to seeing a missile boat perform so well. It may not be the most flexible mech, but it can stand its ground or maneuver when needed and can inflict some good damage if necessary. I've had good results in general, and works best as fire support, stinging heavies and asaults or to slap around light mechs.

  • @cavalryscout9519
    @cavalryscout9519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

These videos are making me realize that I really should just play Davion. I like the way they choose mechs. They tend to have mechs that are cheapish for their weight, which can function well against lighter or heavier mechs, and fit into a variety of lances.
I tend to treat some medium mechs as "keepers", and others as "fillers". A filler is something cheap that I'll use, but if I get the chance to replace it, I will. A "keeper" is something that I will hang onto even if I could afford a whole company of assault mechs. The Dervish is a keeper.
Ideally I'll use the Dervish as fire support for a recon lance, but it can skirmish, scout, or kill light mechs that break through or try to flank too. I tend to pick the Dervish over both the Trebuchet and the Catapult due to the ammo load and mobility; since neither the Trebuchet or the Catapult is a keeper to me (I'd take a Crusader or Archer over either of them for a keeper LRM-carrier), I'd prefer to just go with the Dervish since I can use that in more mobile lances even after better fire support options are available.
Davion also uses the Valkyrie a lot; the Dervish is basically a Valkyrie, but more so. The two mechs can be used on the same sort of missions, but the Valkyrie costs half as much and is half as effective. You could start a pilot off in a Valkyrie and then move them into a Dervish as they get better and the tactics really wouldn't change. It's actually really sensible to use the Valkyrie as a standard light fire support and the Dervish as standard medium fire support.

    • @mattikuokkanen
      @mattikuokkanen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Interesting arguments. I personally prefer 'Mechs of house Steiner of Lyran Commonwealth. Half of their 'Mechs are on heavy-assault side, but their medium 'Mechs go fast, and light 'Mechs go fasta. I like to joke about silly Kurita thinking he's got an advantage in mobility just because their Panther is lighter than Lyran Griffin. Dervish got the mobility down and would be tremendous provider of fire support for Lyran GRF-1S (LRM 5, Large Laser, 2 Medium Lasers). Unfortunately somebody decided that Valkyrie is better for the role...

I have used this thing in MW5, which I overarm with all SRMs 2’s and 4’s, sometimes 6’s if I’m feeling saucy. Four small lasers round the whole danger-package out. Then I pack as much armour on it as I can.
It eats armour. It annihilates light mechs in a couple of volleys or less, and medium mechs in a couple more. It’s absolutely crazy. Just got to watch the heat and fire when you have them dead-centre, or even leading the target by a little. But holy hell you can boil eggs in that cockpit… good job it deletes the pests so quickly and doesn’t really need to continuously hammer out shots non stop.
I know, I know, I’m supposed to put LRMs on it. But I have a trebuchet already, what do you want from me? I need a pest-deleter, and this mad lad is just the ticket. Mind you, it usually gets binned off when the archer (or even the Agincourt) turns up.
It’s quite a lot of fun taking these models and using them in a different way in Battletech 2018 (though this unit isn’t in that game, vanilla) and MW5. Plus… it’s just a goddamn good looking mech.
What a great goddamn franchise. So glad to have found it again during this renaissance.

VERY fond of the Dervish. I like to customize it with a pair of S. R. M. 6s to match with the Medium Lasers then add some Armor and more Heat Sinks. With this combo you can ambush and hit like a MUCH heavier mech in close, just be wary of the range deficiency. Alternatively you can eliminate the S. R. M. 2s and beef up the Heat Sinks, ammo, and armor to give it more survivability in the field at the cost of some damage output. Perfect for those longer battles and skirmishes.
Overall, I agree that it is vastly underappreciated by many and deserves a better showing as a whole.

In terms of the standard model I can't understand why people would waste the BV on this walking powder keg; one ton of ammo in each torso AND arm, over a Whitworth WTH-1 (standard model) which can do nearly everything the Dervish can do for 2 million whole C-bills less. The only sacrifices are speed (4-6-4 vs 5-8-5) and armor, and the armor difference is less than 5 points/area, with the added arm ammo explosions potentially chaining and knocking out the mech because you aren't going to use those 100 shots of srm 2's outside of long campaigns. Combine that with the heat sink problem and you can barely shoot every close range weapon and keep heat neutrality when WALKING, and you just have a mech that tries to do too much without being great at anything.
edit: swapped a word with another

    • @joecosta2645

The dervish is a mech with a lot of system redundancy; this hurts the base model a bit but leaves it open to great mods. I’m running a DV-6Md right now in our heavy lance; it’s been insanely effective under the circumstances. I envision dropping the srms for 2 more medium lasers and armor.

Like the Trebuchet, the Dervish has the ability to relocate quickly in the back field, while putting out a respectable amount of steady long range fire support. The Jump Jets give it a lot more flexibility, but this means it's going to run real hot. I agree that the less-than-ideal armor coverage is mitigated by its speed, which it needs in order to survive on the battlefield. My tabletop experience with it is mixed, with it being destroyed by ammunition explosion more often than not. I also think it's slightly overpriced in terms of BV2. That said, there are definitely worse mechs in the 55-ton range (I'm looking at you, Shadow Hawk and Scorpion!)

In BTA 3062, I often found the XL Engine's "vulnerability" to be surprisingly beneficial. While it did make it more likely that a mech would be disabled, the fact that it happened as soon as either side torso was lost would generally keep the pilot alive, which would prevent a bad situation from getting worse. And while the repairs wouldn't be cheap, the mech chassis would also be recoverable. It was almost like an automatic ejection system, albeit an expensive one.
I lost track of the number of times Dekker's Raven went down, but he was always able to get back up. And he generally spent the mission up to that point killing assault mechs with HE ATMs to the back.

Because of the in-your-face pain of those three, people would not prioritize my Dervish, yet every round get so frustrated taking LRM salvo after LRM salvo. When they tried to attack it, usually they miss because it’s hopping from cover to cover, then get slammed in the rear by my 4P or a heavy. Love the Dervish. Its fast for its era, mobile due to jump jets, and has balanced firepower at short-long range. It doesnt have as much armor as I would like.
The variants are solid, with different models providing basic improvements without being radical.
The DV-8D uses an XL engine to go from 20 Long range missiles to 30 with Artemis IV added, carries more ammunition, adds more armor, replaces the Medium Lasers and Short range missiles with 4 ER Medium Lasers. So its just a solid improvement.
DV-9D is a variant of the DV-8D. It has a reduced payload at 20 MMLs, but those can also fire Short range missiles, meaning its much stronger at close ranges, as well as a Targeting Computer for the 4 ER Medium Lasers. It can run hot with all the short range firepower.
Just to make myself smile there is the probably non-cannon Dervish IIC from a magazine. It uses clan-tech to mount almost double the firepower of standard Dervish.
I never thought about comparing it to an Archer heavy battlemech. I instead compared it to the Whitworth as well as the Trebuchet, which was covered in the last video. The Dervish is faster and jumps further than the Whitworth, and has jump jets the Trebuchet lacks.

This mech is one of the best medium mech period. The little brother of Crusader if you will. And just like Blackjack being a small Rifleman in a way this mech can actually outperform its heavier sibling in certain situation thanks to its jump jets and faster speed.
My fav custom with Meklab is to strip the LRMs because they just lacked the oomph or the missiles necessary to be a good sandblaster. Next is to upgrade the SRMs to the six tubes version, add more armor, heatsinks, and maybe extra m lasers or an SRM 4 even. Voila, a jumping, uparmored Kintaro.

So imagine a Griffon, right, but you pull out the ppc and slap in more missiles. Like 50% more missile, per missile. And then you decide that it’s not nearly enough missile for a medium mech.
    That’s the Dervish.

The archer and dervish share a similar silhouette and purpose. The catapult is more a modular support unit with those box arms. It should also be noted since the archer is the gold standard of quality fire support, the dervish is two-thirds the cost of the archer while the catapult would be just under the 70 tonners price point.

Not mentioned: The dervish in it's supposed lrM or SRM carrier versions is one of the best MRM carriers in the game in tabletop or videogames with that weapons type. When you need a medium mech that can deliver the sort of damage some heavies and assaults can or quickly remove lights and other mediums from the field, accept no substitutes.

I've always liked the Dervish, I actually prefer it over the Trebuchet aka Trenchbucket. But like the Trebuchet it lacks enough heat sinks, however, it's a great mobile fire-support 'Mech complementing the other better known 55 ton 'Mechs. Pair it with the other Medium Trooper 'Mechs, makes a great combo. The 3050 upgrade almost makes it a Zombie 'Mech.

Let's face it, the original artwork for it the Dervish was derpy. I doubt many casual players really looked past that God awful design to appreciate how effective it actually was.
Shadow Hawk looks badass! I'm gonna run one of those!
The Dervish is a far superior mech to the Shadow Hawk, and with the CGI design, it finally looks as good as it plays.

Looks derpy? With that catcher's mitt of death on each hand? It's looks like it should be like getting punched in the face with a splitting maul that is loaded in infernos and laser fire. Sure, you're nuts to try it, and it's maybe not a parade ready model, but it's a blunt object with one mission- kill that mech, over there, very dead then jump up and put a few in the cockpit to be sure.

I do like the stock dervish but I personally have been having more success and fun running a personal build of the Dervish in MW5.
Swapping the LRM10's for SRM6's, the SRM2's for LRM5's, and adding an additional heatsink and ton of armor. It allows me to be much more aggressive, while simultaneously still letting me pick and choose my battles due to being able to use the jump jets much more often. Very good for dealing with lots of Light mechs, Combat vehicles and VTOL's, while also letting me nip at mediums and heavies until I can choose when to strike with my SRM's.

A pair of Dervish mechs can skirt and apply equal pressure on the battlefield.
I found more luck running the 7D and removing the SRM-2s for ammo, armor, and/or heatsinks.
    A 7D i'd run would be Twin LRM 10's
    12 Double Heatsinks
    2 Medium Pulse lasers
Enough Ammo and Armor I can put on the mech.
It gives enough longevity to the field while being a threat to vehicles and wounded light mechs. I often would pair this up with a Kintaro 9B, but that 9B would have its LRM 5's stripped out to up ton the engine and armor, so it can fill a striker/spotter role for the Dervish. This given with 2 Crap 27RB's and that Dervish would act as a breaker mech, allowing the Crab's energy weapons and Kintaro's SRM 6's score vital damage.

  • @michaelmills8205

The Dervish is a mech that I am not fond of, due to an irrational hatred of SRM-2 racks. I also feel that second tonne of SRM-2 ammo can make it into an ammo bomb, especially on the variants with SSRM-2.
That said, it's a mech I offend find myself using. If I am deploying a generic medium lance in the succession wars era, my default is the Big 3 (Griffin, Shadow Hawk, Wolverine) plus another mech, usually a Phoenix Hawk, or Dervish. It works fairly well in that kind of lance, giving it additional closer range firepower that some of the big 3 lack. I also rarely have heat issues with, since its brackets are cool before heat movement. Once you get into position, you can rain down fire with little issues.
I think that it's biggest issue is fairly plain artwork. Unlike the other 55 tonne mechs in TRO3025, its not based on a unit from "Fang of the Sun Dougram", which had mecha designs by Kunio Okawara who also did the mecha design for the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" and numerous other mecha anime and franchises. Most of the artwork for the Dervish is ugly, but not in a utilitarian "this is a warmachine" way. The torso is pushed back, looking like the center of mass is well behind hips, with numerous random bulges for no apparent reasons. It just doesn't have the visual appeal of the Big 3.

Strolling into the late game in BTA 3062, and I still have one of these in my main lance. I can't remember what configuration I have it in, it has been a couple weeks since my last play, but I have no problems putting it right beside my assault mechs in battle. I think I may have upgraded one of the LRM's to an LRM 20, and then swapped the other for SRM10 or 12(6+4 or 6+6). And sadly, I don't think I have the really good one, with the four energy weapon slots, I think mine only has two.

The SRM-2's are there for looks. Unfortunately due to rounding the SRM-2 on average delivers 1 rocket to the target most of the time. Even if it delivers its full payload that is 4 points of damage. The Dervish would be better served getting rid of both SRMs and the allocated ammo, adding a 3rd medium laser and taking the remaining 2 tons in armor. This only raises the heat burden of its close range weapons package by 1, which allows the Dervish to fire all 3 medium lasers and walk while remaining heat neutral. This wasn't done for two reasons. The minor reason is it makes it too similar to the Trebuchet and Catapult. The major reason is the art for the mech existed before the design was made.
Honestly, if you like SRMs enough that you want to keep the launcher, you'd be better off with a single SRM-4 than 2 SRM-2s.

Honestly if I was to give it an upgrade it probably would be to replace the LRM10s with a pair of MML5s each, give it half a ton of SRM ammo, and maybe even swap the Streak SRMs out for a pair of MRM10s because nothing says spicy like being blasted by twenty LRMs, then twenty MRMs, and then finally twenty SRMs because f*ck anything that gets close enough for that. Might need a Light Fusion Engine to fit all that but as long as it's got CASE (or even CASE II) it should be fine. Might need some more heat sinks, maybe an ECM, and if we're feeling extra cheeky, maybe Stealth Armor "acquired" from the Capellans.
Or there's always the meme build of replacing it all with Thunderbolts because big Missiles go boom.

I have found the Dervish to be relatively lacklustre for a 55 ton mech. Mostly the heat management is just unacceptable.
In my BEX 3025 and 3029 campaigns I prey on these things. Without some Star League tech especially double heat sinks these things struggle to provide firepower.
