    Colourful Trains at Carlisle
    68s, 88s, 70, 90s, Pendos in various liveries
    06 January 23
    Taken on the last day of the Christmas and New Year strikes. Only Avanti were running some token Anglo-Scottish trains with nothing from Trans Pennine.
    The lines served by Northern and ScotRail were out of action as they are manually signalled. To keep within the limited hours available from the Power Signal Boxes, the intermodals were running during the day rather than spread over early morning to late in the day. While the Oil tanks to and from Dalston ran, they proceeded no further north than Carlisle Yard. No departmentals today!
    Despite all this we still got both of the 'celebrity' Pendolinos plus a variety of locos.
    The West Coast 37s were laid up presumably awaiting a job - or a driver to take them back to Carnforth.

    What a superb opening sequence from Wreay, the golden light, mistiness and the sun reflecting off the metals. There seemed to be more 'squealers' that day!

      Thanks John. I'm rather proud of that opening sequence at Wreay as I was worried about the sun rising too high and the mist burning off before the train arrived

    What a difference a bit of sunlight makes. I, like others was blown away by the sunlight on the Pendolino in the opening shot, fantastic capture Les.

    I would like to thank you for all your great videos. Really impressed how the Uk rail network seems to of got its act together with decent rolling stock. I am originally from Uk but have lived in USA since 95. Amtrak / USA have a lot to learn fro Uk rail networks.

      Thanks Michael. It's rather chaotic at the moment but I know, from travelling with Amtrak over many years, how advanced many trains are in comparison, even our 40 year old stock compares well with superliners and the like.

    What a beautiful video of the PRIDE train on the countryside! That was epic, Les! You said at the beginning it was a quiet day in Carlisle, and then the video felt o quiet and mellow. Weird. It was sad to keep coming back to that TPE sitting there (and the locos at times) and not moving. Felt sorry for them. lol Anyhow, it was another cool video and nice mix of freight and passenger trains... locos and other units! All the best and stay safe!

    The announcer said the Avanti had elen coaches, that set me thinking to when I was a little boy in the fifties. There was a train, "The Caledonian" that went past Kendal (through Oxenholme) at maybe 11-11.30 a.m. and had only 8 coaches, it was a bit of a sprinter, the headboard, as well as the name had crossed, crosses of St George and St Andrew.
    Google alas only seems to know about the Caledonian sleeper.
    Keep the videos coming.
    Again when I was a little boy the Brits were awesome but nothing was as mysterious as 10000 and 10001.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The Caledonian was definitely a sprinter, I just remember the Brits on the trains to Barrow but the LMS pair were unknown to me.

    Hi Les Another good video, I think the "Do Not Travel" message put out by the RDG is causing the lack of passengers, even though some trains are running they just want to discourage anybody from trying to get anyway, its a shambles really and not good for the long term (sorry for the little rant there, lol). Thanks

    I haven't seen that location at Wreay used by anyone else. It is a particularly fortuitous location to get that straight section between the curves without an intermediary tree. A few yards either way and the scene is lost.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, it's a great spot. The row of trees is inconspicuous in the winter months. I think many photographers have ignored it as it's on a falling gradient to Carlisle.

    Hi les can you possibly help my wife has been kind enough to let me have a few hours out at Carlisle, BUT it's can only be a Friday night through to Saturday morning so not to bother the kids routine or school. So is it still worth coming up to Carlisle through the night?

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen guys do it. I'd check it with the station office first and they'll keep a waiting room open for you I believe and a toilet lol. But I'd check Real Time Trains to see what usually runs on a Friday night (not everything planned in the timetable does). I must admit I've yet to do it.

    The rail track is in a terrible state. It all needs re-laying.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sure does - I understand that Network Rail know it but can't work out how to do it! HS2 is supposed to mean a rebuild and relignment of part of the trackwork. There are tracks there that date from before the 60s whilst much was laid out in the early 70s. Long lengths are replaced often but the pointwork and sidings and bays are showing their age.
