I just started through my interest in Nirvana. And one of my neighbours . I noticed she and her brother gave me a Nirvana cassette. But she recommended The Pixies and through spying on her. I think she was a Pearl Jam fan. From Pearl Jam. I got interested in : Living In The Free World . In particular the 2nd chorus . Of course in the past a single was more of a product . I reckon.
Great interview . Neil talked so much of how he writes and make music . He. Is so gifted . My emotions are flying everywhere . I cry with Neil , I cry for everyone involved in his project . We love you Neil . You have taken us on a ride that no one can replace . ❤
I have an unwavering appreciation and reverence for Neil Young. His songwriting and delivery are so captivating, timeless and evoke so many emotions in me. As a human being, he is as genuine and steadfast as they come. The musical landscape is, and always will be a far more compelling and rich place thanks to his incredible body of work.
Do you (as me) dig his earlier work as much or more than his later work.? Decade has a few samples, (Burned, Expecting to fly etc) Everybody Knows.. Harvest, ATGR, On the Beach, Time fades away, Tonight's the Night, Journey through the past , Comes a time, American Stars..(mita left out a cpl).. These to my ears n mind has left an impact on me for a lifetime.. Live Rust was the greatest show I've seen n heard to this day. Gold.
Then don't read "Shakey: Neil Young's Biography." I like Neil's music and have listened to him since Buffalo Springfield, but Neil is not the person you'd want to trust for a friend. He would do whatever was most expedient for him without a thought as to what effect it might have on you.
"Steadfast" is not an apt adjective for a person who leaves his wife of 35 years for a younger woman. Even if one doesn't want to be judgemental about a creative genius, his actions in real life make one doubt the "soul" behind his music.
Jo Jeffries I think his earlier work is far superior, a lot of songs he's releasing now were rehashed songs he wrote decades ago which were left off Albums. His last 4 or 5 Albums were mediocre at best, I was excited to hear Nils was back only to be disappointed he's hardly used at his best, I saw the Trans tour and Nils was playing some superb duelling guitar with Neil and made his presence felt, this time around it feels like Nils is being shackled, the only time I know when it's Nils is when he's playing piano or accordion, what a waste of an amazing guitarist, is Neil too jealous these days to let Nils loose, a bit like Springsteen who makes him stick to strict guitar playing.?
Neil Young has always had a lot to say, and we are blessed he’s still speaking his mind. No one like him in the rock & roll world. A true original. Keep Rockin’ Neil!
Zane Lowe is such a terrific interviewer. To get so much engagement out of notoriously difficult but brilliant artists like NY and remain himself is a real art in itself. Great series
Great interview. A friend of mine said that he worked on a tour with Neil Young in the 90s and everyday when it was lunchtime Neil Young worked as a server in the catering. He did it as a way to meet everybody that worked on the tour crew so he could thank them.
I'm so glad that we still have people like him around doing all those things.. I remember when I was 10 and I saw the video for "This notes for you" and then saving money to buy his records.. he is the best.
I found the album today and just kept it on repeat all day. A great album - I'm pleased for the band and anyone else who enjoys the music. Neil's a top bloke.
This is a great interview - I can see now why Neil seems so stoked about the discovery of the Summer Songs session. It lines up perfectly with his new recording method. I'm not sure the first take thing always sounds as good on the record as it feels to them, but when it works, it really works.
To be fair, I think some people tend to compulsively talk when they're nervous or uncertain about how they're being perceived. There's an interview with Mark Lanegan like that. I think the interviewer was Joseph Arthur. It's not a great quality in an interviewer, I agree. That's why Larry King was so great. He let people talk. Mark Laita of Soft White Underbelly is another great interviewer.
I started collecting music at an early age, have been to hundreds of concerts and have been a DJ for 15 years. Played every kind of music at every kind of party. Neil Young and Joni Mitchell seem to me to stand on their own as artists. Another plane. Unfortunately I never saw Joni live. But Neil Young live was the greatest show I've ever seen. There's something so visceral and so earth shattering about seeing him (and Crazy Horse). So raw, so real, so human. It shakes you up.
Love how authentic, and deeply honest and candid Neil Young talks. He speaks from his heart and lives everyday trying to make the world a better place through his music. His music speaks to the soul. At 62, I can honestly say that whenever my world fell apart through the years, Neil's music has always spoke to my heart and gave a sense of calm. Not sure if he reads comments, but all I can say is "Thank you neil, for making the world a better place. Your music sure has made my world better through the years. "
In 1970 I bought my first car, plugged in 'After the goldrush' and listened endlessly to Neils raw creative brilliance! NY still has no peers when it comes to tugging my heartstrings...and though I enjoy plenty flashy guitar Gods...none make it bleed like Neil does! Just feel privileged that he's still here providing the soundtrack to an otherwise mediocre soundscape👍🥰

No offence to his contemporaries, but none of them are still creating relevant music the way Neil Young is, this album is a triumph. The guitar work on Welcome Back is up there with his classic albums, it’s astounding.
Just 5 minutes in and he's talking about how the sounds resonates or doesn't against round logs of a barn. How many musicians can tell you things like this without some input or education from their producer or engineer? He's a true musical genius.
Love Mr. Young's comments on going forward to help save this planet. And Yes, I hope we're not too late. Great interview. Would love to meet the man at some point. Thank you.
Good interview but this is not Neil's house in Malibu, which is being rebuilt at the moment after it was destroyed by fire.
