    The most common oil leak under the engine is actually not from the engine itself, but from the vacuum pump seals. There are front, rear and side rubber seals that eventually leak and require removing the vacuum pump to replace. It is actually easier to delete the vacuum pump and block the cavity with a sealing plate made by IE which is cheaper and permanent. There are several videos out there showing how to do it. I did it over 10K miles ago and have no oil leaks at all from it. My 2008 VW Rabbit 2.5L has well over 160K miles on it and I love it.

      You still got it? I'm thinking not getting one, I was burnt out from an older gen vw I had, but it was mostly due to the previous owner neglect and some parts are pricier than other brands.

    My 04 MK5 is still going strong today at nearly 100k miles. Interior is great, no rust, keyfob works brilliantly, runs well, no issues. Dont be put off by this video but I guess it does show buying a looked after car can be worth that extra bit of money.

    They’re great cars. I’ve owned my GT since new, 2007. Very few problems. Twin charged, 168 BHP. It’s been a lot of fun all year round and through some harsh winters.
    The battery died today after 189,000 miles. Yeah, you read that correctly!

    your door lock issue is more than likely caused by the VERY common, short door harnesses. The MKV door wiring harnesses were manufactured about an inch too short. You will need to remove the door skin, (easy) the inner door panel, repair the broken wires and extend the harness. I also slightly rerouted the wiring to release some of the installed tension. (I've had to repair both front door harnesses twice, different wires broke at different times on both front doors)

    Since there have been a lot of comments complaining about this: I am well aware that my car is far from pristine, it was a steal because of it's condition. I bought it at 120,000 miles and it had all of these problems except the flex pipe which failed while I owned the car. Of course if you maintain your car well there is a lower chance of these issues, especially the cosmetic ones, occurring. The purpose of this video is simply to show what commonly goes wrong on this generation of VW.

      Driving 1 mk5 1.4 FSI I can confirm these common problems. My central door locking is not working anymore after 100 k kms. My flexpipe broke and I replaced it together with the catalytic converter in 1 piece. My Left CV axle is completely rusted and I have a new issue wich I have trouble with tracking down so anybody who wants to have a listen on my channel to the loud sound I'm getting while driving is welcome. Thnx.

      Thanks for the informative video! I thought it was constructive, I don't understand all the hate in the comments. You did not sound like you were complaining. You simply pointed out what COULD maybe go wrong. I have an extensive history of working on VWs & you brought up at least 3 or 4 very common failures that happens to almost every MkV eventually. (Door locks, headliner sag, interior soft touch wear, flex pipe, small oil leaks etc) These happen to alot of MkVs. Not all, but they are fairly common. Ignore all of the haters, they sound very immature and they are naive about the MkV.

    VW mk4+ headliners can't take the heat of the South. The foam glue fails and the fabric separates. The hotter your weather the sooner it occurs. It is fixable and not a serious problem - but it shouldn't happen. If you are having locking problems you need to test your car with a vag-com or equivalent to see what is wrong. It might be a faulty lock module, trunk/hood switch, or something trivial.

  • @KathleenJean53
    @KathleenJean53 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Had multiple clutch Spring failures at 100,000 miles, expensive fix, VW mechanics tried to blame the way I drove, NOT! Little crappy Spring seems more likely, also antilock sensor rusted and expanded, fail inside the wheel at 90,000 miles, expensive fix. This car has been pretty reliable for ten years and is really great in snowy conditions when you buy winter snow tires. Replacing muffler and fixing a small hole in exhaust at 116,000 miles. So a few blips but a solid, fun and relatively economical car and considering the sticker price with all kinds of options standard, I love this car. P.s. Never had any issues with my Accord clutch for fifteen years!

  • @tonytrilex2555
    @tonytrilex2555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    They also tend to have transmission issues with the valve body and it might require a valve body rebuild with a shift kit to modify internal parts of the valve body. Also the vacuum pump tends to leak because of a bad gasket. Along with other intake leaks. I would say that is most of it and normal wear and tear just like any other car.

    Thanks. Yes, those are effectively weak points .In my case, main issues: (electricity) locks, window operator, fuses box; plastic wear, glove compartement lock fail;
    steering rack wear (replacement)... but the engine, after 20 years and 290200, doesn't know what a mechanic is.

    I got an mk5. 2.0tdi 4motion. Do not have any of these faults. One of your faults i can agree with is the rust. I started noticing rust on the front doors. But i've seen a few mk5's with this problem b.cuz of the water does not flow as it should, then at winter it transform to ice. Mine has past 135 000 km now. And all i can say after owning it for 2 years, i worship vw. Even if u got some faults, it may have less then other brands. Love my car❤

    Thank you. My key fob for the door locks on my 2007 drive me nuts too. Sometimes the alarm goes off when I press lock or unlock, and won’t turn off until I get in the car and turn on the ignition. My neighbors are probably like. WTH? Is he doing. Lol The trunk doesn’t open until I press the fop like 5 times. My headliner had to be replaced last year as well. I had to change out my headlights this year because of the thick haze that accumulated over the last few years. All and all it’s been a winner car for me. No mechanical, except for a oil regulator replacement. Not bad for a 11 going on 12 year old car. Hope I can keep it until it becomes a classic ride.

    I’ve experienced flex pipe failure twice. After having it repaired the first time last year, it just went again a month ago. The reason was because the dogbone/subframe mounts were worn out and the hangers on the exhaust connect to the subframe. The car is still drivable but now the subframe is putting more pressure on the exhaust.

    I just bought a mark 5 for my girlfriend and she loves it as it's a major improvement on the mark 4 she's been driving for the last 10 years. What she doesn't realise is that I've been checking her cars every week since her first one. Air, oil and water have miraculously appeared, the interior is never untidy and the bodywork is usually clean and shiny. In order to convince her to get rid of the mark 4 I just stopped doing all that stuff and after about a month she convinced herself that it was time to move on.

    Mk5 GTI (in hong kong, made in south africa), Owned the car for 2 yrs with about 50k on the clock. Some similar issues.
    - Same central locking failure, started with front passenger door (left side) now drivers door and rear left passenger door, the other day I couldn't get out of the car !! quite scary. (great info from a guy lower down on wiring harness being too short)
    - The headliner was replaced just prior to me buying the car, my fake leather door cards have collapsed on all doors (internal foam degraded) and temporarily glued back.. I say that as I keep having to reglue ever few months.
    - My sunroof automatically opened a few weeks back when I was at a set of traffic light.. wtf !!
    - Drivers seat lumber support broke a yr ago, sounds like a plastic gear slipping or something
    - Flapper motor failure according to OBD but can only hear a slight ticking.. dont know what its supposed to do
    - Crappy air con.. only seams to work when its below 25 degrees c which is when you don't need it, it does get crazy hot here
    - Rear hub bearings replaced last yr
    - DSG gets confused in city traffic, great on a open road (contemplating a re-map with stage 1 tune)
    - Zero rust, externally perfect (no salt on the roads here)
    - Mechanically fantastic !

    Door locks have been problematic starting at 100,000 Miles. Many problems in the rear hatch too, wouldn’t unlock, wiper fail, back up lights and top third brake light not working. I asked the dealer to check wiring, they scoffed and started by replacing that third brake light unit to the tune of $290.00! That didn’t fix it. When they fixed broken wires all the rear hatch issues were solved. My clutch has failed twice now at 114,000 Miles. No, it is not my driving. It is cheap plastic parts and ridiculous little spring unit, looks like it came out of a free pen. The trick now is to find a dealer with good technicians. This is an expensive fix. I love my 2007 Rabbit. Would I buy VW again? Nope.

    Okay so my only issues are the locking mechanisms and ceiling sagging ( I chucked it up to living in so cal where it gets 120 in the summers) but my fob locks my passenger side door and sometimes it locks the driverside so I make sure I manually lock it. Any information on how to fix the lock mechanisms?

    You were on the money with these issues. The car has been close to bulletproof especially with the motor.
    I have a ‘09 2.5L Jetta and it had dsg auto shifting problems at 120k miles and I went to go get a fluid change for the first time and they fix the problem completely. I can tell I did some wear to The DSG auto because I didn’t know what the problem was right away. It does wine when I accelerate between certain speeds like 25 - 30 and 55 - 60 miles an hour. Now, the good thing is dsg doesn’t give me any shifting issues and shifts like new.
    I went to my RepairPal.com to find the most common issue with MK5 VW across multiple generations and I kept seeing the DSG auto had shifting issues around 120k in the MK5 era and other eras. Is this something I should be worried about?

    Anyone got a quote on a mk5 golf for the door mechanism, UK

  • @lennycook206
    @lennycook206 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You seem to be getting a lot of grief... I too have a VW golf but the 1.9tdi golf plus 2005. It has 110k miles. The central door locking is rubbish, it's an infamous issue and is due to either filthy micro switch (the door skin design equates to lots of debris entering the mechanism inside the door) or the bigger of the 2 motors sticks. The other issue that is also a known common fault is a whine from the gearbox. This problem seems to differ slightly from 1 car to another but on my car it's 3rd when accelerating only. It selects perfectly and feels strong (although I naturally treat 3rd with care) its fine when decelerating strangely. Its a 5 speed. Looks an easy fix for the 6 speed but the 5 speed is sealed. I've read plenty of people quoting VW techs stating its "normal"
    I don't think so VW. Otherwise it's a brilliant typical reliable German car. So my top tip is to any car thief, try the doors as I'm sure most people won't realise that the door locking hasn't engaged on all doors. My one seems to mostly be the passenger door but can be random too. Took me a few weeks to realise and I live near an infamous car crime area.... Blackbird Leys. Nuff said.

    These don't have a oil leaks you just have a bad vacuum pump that is causing it to leak, the vacuum pump leaking is a very common failure in the 2.5l. Downpipe tend to break if you have a bad motor mount or dogbone mount not common just maintance. For your key fab not working its due to a bad door lock module also a common thing in these cars. Other then that these cars are great.
