I had a four door with manual. It sounded amazing when I had an exhaust leak 😂 until it got too loud. Straight pipe is the way to go. These cars are solid but getting more power is a problem so I got a GTI. Thermostat went at around 100k. Then I drove it for another 60 k without any issues. Just oil, brakes. Original clutch and all. Maybe bc this gen is made in Germany.
Love the video. I'd love to be able to produce content like this. My son and I have the same project car. We picked it up for $800 and invested about $4k into it. It mostly had the same issues you found. I managed to find a complete "scratch and dent" ESC coilover kit with mounts, bearings, stretch bolts, etc for $150. I installed a mk6 GTI exhaust for $50 and the car sounds tremendous! We have a short running intake manifold and an ECU tune now. I have a few videos on my channel if you're interested.
Good video and cool project. Definitely need to hear more of that 5-cylinder sound!!
She gonna get straight piped!

Yeah the made in Germany aspect definitely influenced my choice of buying this one.
