    I'm about to replace a section of gutter, really similar to this job, and this makes me feel like I can do the job myself with no problem. This is how I want instructional TH-cam videos to be. You explain every step in simple terms without a bunch of unnecessary filler, on an actual project, with a great positive attitude. Really excellent video.

      Except "Goop" ... For beginners like me, I don't know if that's what it's actually called or a metaphor.

    I rarely leave comments. Super clear. Efficient use of video time. Minimal banter. Much appreciated man. Maybe you should make videos on how to make efficient videos. Other comments seem to support this.

    Clear and simple. Thanks, bro. The only thing I'd like to see up-close would be how you drive the screw into the brackets to fix it to the edge. Is that self-explanatory when you see the actual bracket (like, there's only one way to do it)? Do you need to seal the screws? Thanks again!

    • @homemend

      hey happy!..self explanatory my friend. the brackets guide the screw right where they are needed, ive never sealed the screws before. You got this!

    • @homemend
      @homemend  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi tim.. you would want to pre drill with a masonry bit and use an anchor or you could just fill the hole with wood and attach a screw that way! hope this helps!

      if you have solid block concrete blocks like my house you will need a ramset with the red power loads and 1 inch set nails. the 1 1/2' will not go all the way into the blocks with red loads.. BTW it kicks like mule, if you brace it against your body you will need some padding. I bruised some ribs doing it that way.. I tried masonry bits with a 3/4 drill and only got about 1/4" in to to the block.

    Do you need to patch or seal the holes that were left from the screws on the old gutter? Also do you measure the slope?

    • @homemend
      @homemend  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Travis it’s definitely a preference if you’d like to fill those holes or not. More than likely the new gutter will cover and protect them. I don’t measure the slope I just throw in about 2 inches for a 10 foot section. I hope this helps

    My buddy’s gutters need to be replaced at the downspout, so I figured I’d help him out and just replace the whole section. It’s maybe twenty feet. Should I start at the opposite corner? Or can I install the downspout and work my way back? Does it matter as long as the slope is there?

    • @homemend

    • @homemend
      @homemend  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey shal..you can use the screw hangers into the rafter ends or you may want throw a 1x 4 or 1x6 behind it..shoot it on then secure the gutter...i hope this helps!

    • @Shalmaneser1
      @Shalmaneser1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@homemend @SimonSaysDIY Thanks for writing. Closer examination shows the ends are 1/2" back of the paper, which is 1/2" back of the shingles. I'm thinking 1" x 5" fascia after sealing up the weathering ends. Great camera work.

  • @pyrofful
    @pyrofful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job except I didn't hear you mention anything about a slope. I did roofing in the past and the guys would say how much of a pain it is to get the right pitch across a long roof. Our company didn't do gutters so I don't have any experience but unless I missed I I didn't hear you mention any angling for rain to roll toward the downspout.

    In a mobile home with aluminum soffit, what is the best way to attach the gutter bracket? Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • @homemend
      @homemend  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike! Great question! I would attach them every 18 to 24 inches along the length of the gutters. #8, 1 ½ inch screws, just below the eaves. I hope this helps!

  • @MrWhitelightning73
    @MrWhitelightning73 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is “goop” simply clear silicone. And do you prefer screws or rivets.

    • @homemend
      @homemend  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey charles...lol goop... ( gutter seal) in the gutter dept. but silicone should work also..gutter goop is a bit hardcore...i usually do screws so they can be removed. i hope this helps!

    Thanks for the video. Two questions: How much slope do you want the gutter to have to ensure drainage? And how did you ensure you screwed the mounting screws into the ends of the rafters and not just into the fascia?

    • @homemend
      @homemend  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi donovan, good questions! theres no code where i live but i try to do about an inch per 10 ft. You can see the nail heads in the fascia board or you can peak through under the shingles between the sheathing and fascia to see the rafters. I usually get one or two in the rafter per 10 ft run. Thanks for watching!

    How do I handle the slope when I need to go all the way around the house (due to hipped roof) and to slope 1/4" every 10' would cause me to run out of facia?

      the goop is called "gutter seal" found in the gutter aisle..you can also use harcore exterior silicone or a poly based product like quad.

  • @shelleyannette
    @shelleyannette 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is your inside "goop" really called. Also, the edge of the roof looks a mess and you are adding new gutter. If the shingles are hanging over the frame of the house it looks like water would shoot up under the shingles.

    • @homemend
      @homemend  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi shelley, i believe its called " gutter seal" and should be in the gutter aisle. typically the shingles would hang over about 1.5 inches into the gutter. I suppose if you do not clean your gutters, it could roll back under the shingles. i hope this helped you, thanks for watching!

    So do you just drill the screws into the board. I didn't hear him say anything about finding a rafter. ?? How long does that hang there with that method of every two or three feet. ?? They are one and a half inch for a reason ...

    • @homemend
      @homemend  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey jm..if your wood is sound you don't need to find a rafter..and....i guess it will hang there as long as your fascia holds the screws..but add as many as you like...you cant see them!! thanks for commenting!

    Not for novices. Have no idea what half of the terms you said actually meant. Goop, tapper, drop-in? Reminds me of how IT people explain things. But great video for someone that actually has some familiarity and maybe needed a refresher.

    • @homemend
      @homemend  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alex sorry man I thought I explained it well. The goop is the goop that I Gooped onto the seam ( gutter sealant ) A tapper is the self tapping screw that has a cutter head and is basically self drilling. The drop in is the thing that was dropped into the gutter after cutting the hole
