When Suzuka was in primary school, she made a promise to choreographer Mikiko that she would never cry on stage. She sobbed after this when she got off stage. She has been a true professional since childhood.

It's quite adorable, this was over ten years ago but you find the girls still support each other to this day. Only Su graduated from SG this year, the other three (notice the ones with bows) were all graduating from elemontary to senior school, Mariri was leaving 3 years early (being only 12), to pursue her dream ov becoming a model.

Such a wholesome environment these young ladies evidently experienced. A rare thing in the entertainment industry indeed.
Suzuka displayed a maturity far beyond her years.

Don't forget to check out the "nendo tests" starting in 2010. They were annual exams that they gave to the group on general culture and then they obtained a classification based on their performance. This is where the funniest moments come from reading the girls' responses.

I started watching the guides to Babymetal and learned so much. They're a little different than you expect. OH and if you ever run across Moa's habit when someone else is talking during interviews, I'll just say that once they point it out, you can't unsee it and it's cute lol.

A couple of things to remember for a new fan. "Fukei" & "Nendo" will be very common words you'll hear when going down the Sakura Gakuin rabbit hole.
Fukei is how Sakura Gakuin refers to their fans. It literally means parent or guardian in Japanese.
Nendo means "school year" (it could also mean "fiscal year" in Japanese but in the context of Sakura Gakuin it will always mean "school year") and is how all of Sakura Gakuin's activities are scheduled around. Their graduation concerts are always held when the Japanese school year ends at the end of March and their transfer-in ceremony concerts where they welcome new members is always at the beginning of May. That was the case until the pandemic hit in 2020 and their graduations had to be postponed a few months due to Covid restrictions. Since they were unable to get any new members that year Sakura Gakuin closed down for good in 2021.
The members usually join the group any where from 5th to 7th grade with a few exceptions but always graduate at the end of 9th grade. So if they join in 5th grade they would be in the group for 5 years, if they join in 7th grade they would be in the group for 3 years. Mariri was the only member (out of all 36) who graduated early. She join as a 6th grader and was only in the group for 1 year. She decided she wanted to become a model instead, which she did for many years. Ironically, she recently joined another J-Pop group (her first since she left SG 13 years ago) called LUCY (@maririn_LUCY)
Another thing to remember is that they don't refer to the middle school grades as 7th, 8th & 9th grade. They refer to them as 1st grade of middle school, 2nd grade of middle school & 3rd grade of middle school. And sometimes subtitlers will abbreviate them to just 1st grade, 2nd grade & 3rd grade which can be very confusing. Just remember that when you hear them talk about the "3rd graders" they are referring to the "seniors" who are actually in 9th grade.
As for suggestions, if you want to react to more music videos I recommend "Song For Smiling" another one from Su's senior year or "Heart no Hoshi" from Yui & Moa's senior year. The seniors always get the most lines and screen time in their videos. Or if you want to watch something to that shows more of their personality, the Nendo test videos are always good. The "Gakunen Matsu Tests" (lit. "end of school year tests" - but we just call them Nendo tests) are surprise tests that Mori-sensei would spring on the girls every year. There are 12 of them, (1 for every year from 2010 to 2020 except 2015 which had 2) and they are always hilarious. He would give them 15 minutes to answer 20 questions and then show everyone the funniest answers. Definitely worth watching.
Look at me I'm turning into Grington300!

Mariri reportedly left SG early because she was already a successful model and the commute from Hiroshima was taking its toll on her. She, like Su, was a graduate of Actor's School Hiroshima, as was later SG member and Metalverse lead singer, Miko Todaka. ASH has produced a lot of top talent in the music industry.

Nendo is a school year. It runs from April to March next year (like a fiscal year in some cases). So, it can be a bit confusing when it says "nendo 2012" and it's actually from March 2013.
They are incredible human beings and we all need to learn a lot from them.

Thanks for the video. Moa has always been a very emotional girl and her connection with Su is special. I have also laughed as a defense mechanism to keep from crying. If you don't get emotional watching these girls, you're not human. The world would be a better place if more people were like these girls.

There were 4 people in the graduation photo because 3 girls were graduating from elementary school. Together with Su who was the only one who was supposed to leave because she had already completed the entire course. The other girl left before finishing the course, as she received an offer to be a model.

  • @johnschultz7765
    @johnschultz7765 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

There were 4 graduates. 3 graduating from the Elementary school division: Rinon, Saki, Mariri. Mariri did also leave SG. Rinon and Saki continued on in the middle school division of SG. The elementary school level members wear a fancy bow tie, the middle schoolers wear a necktie. Nendo is the school year.
Yui perfectly described the situation with Mariri. Mariri was also commuting to Tokyo on weekends from Hiroshima as Su- had done the prior 2 years. Also, Su- and Mariri knew each other from Actor's School Hiroshima.

So the idea of graduating from an idol group is not just something that was done in Sakura Gakuin, but is very common in most Idol groups and simply means that a member is or has left the group. In the case with Sakura Gakuin, it being a School Themed group, the "Graduation" would seem to more closely resemble real life.
In Japan, most kids complete compulsory education around the age of 15. Likewise, when kids in the younger Idols groups reach 15, they "graduate" out of the idol group. In real life, this would be the same as graduating from Highschool in the West, and can then just enter the work force. However, they can then also go on to a tech school where they can learn a trade, or go on to higher education in "High School"..but their High School is Not compulsory and is seen more as a Preparatory School for University Entrance Exams.
Hope that helps a bit and as always....
    Put your Kitsune UP!!

Thanks for explaining this. My family is from Mexico and it seems like they use the same names for the education system. My grandmother would ask me if I graduated from Prepatory School and I didn't know how to answer. I'd have to ask my mom every time lol.

Nendo is a school year. Nendos are marked by the year they start, unlike in the west where we mark them by the year they end. So while this graduation happened in 2013, it was the 2012 Nendo.
Yui was a hot blubbering mess the previous year when Airi (the tallest member) graduated, because Yui always dreamed of growing tall like Airi-chan.

Su is such a quick minded girl, watching her on Sakura Gakuin lets you see not only that but other aspects of her personality, which was hidden for the most part during the first years of Baby Metal, fortunately after the BM rebirth this has changed a lot, nowadays you can really see peaks of her personality during concerts being funny and goofy everything being encouraged by Moa and Momo’s playful personalities on stage.

My single best take-away is Moa promising to always support Su. Moa has kept that promise, to the point where Su relies heavily on Moa.
Where Moa states "I love you' - they have both said multiple times that no one really understands the nature of their relationship; IMO it's like a stong very close familia relationship and years of shared experiences. Sometimes called "Mother Moa" she takes care of Su and now Momo.
Check out the actual graduation speaches from Su, Maria, the principal, and sensei; plus the surprise party for Su's graduation by the girls.
The end of the year Neno tests are a great way to more insight into they personalities. You'll need to find out the meaning of "Delorean" and Su forgeting Moa's name.

Sakura Gakuin is well worth looking into imo - the nendo tests and some of the jokes are pretty fun - and they actually do some pretty good music sometimes. The sweat comment I totally get - in the early days she'd sweat a lot (they all did) but somehow it made them look even cooler and gave the impression they were giving 110% - I kinda miss that :P

If you're going on the SG train, I would suggest the annual 'Nendo Tests,' (beginning with 2010) that way you'll get to see a lot about each of their personalities, as well as the very quirky and funny teacher. There's also a skit you might enjoy about Yui's being depressed due to being short. They also do some competitions and things too. Besides, of course, the songs.

Nice one. Sakura Gakuin was active from 2010 to 2021. The girls would graduate when they were 15, new girls would transfer in to take their place.
Three members had graduated in 2012, Su was the only graduate in 2013 (Mariri was the other girl leaving, but she was not 15 - she lived in Hiroshima and had got a modelling contract, so the commute to Tokyo was too much, she had only been in SG for a year I think).
Yui and Moa graduated in 2015.
Nendo is a school year (this was the end of the 2012 nendo - they use the year it starts to name it, so the 2012 nendo ran from 2012 to I think about March 2013).

"Nendo" can be interpreted as "school term" or "class of...". So if you see "2012 Nendo", it can means "class of 2012", or "2012 school term".
The girl that graduated with Su was Mariri. She only had joined Sakura Gakuin for a year and decided to leave early to focus on her modeling career, which she already had going. As it was difficult for her at the time to balance the workload, traveling, etc. She was 12, 6th grade primary school.
At the end, they showed pictures of the 4 because, other than Su, the other 3 "graduated" from 6th grade primary school and will be 1st grade middle schooler next nendo (school term). And will wear necktie instead of ribbon tie.
Moa cried a lot because it's who she is. She's not shy to show her love and appreciation to others. Plus, at the time, there's no official confirmation that Babymetal would continue after that.
Definitely do more Sakura Gakuin. Though there are not many non-song videos out on TH-cam. Most of them are in the fandom archives.
    For songs, I would suggest:
Sakura Gakuin - "Aogeba Toutoshi" This is the MV. It's from 2014 nendo, Moa, Yui, Hana, and Yunano's senior year.

Dude! SG has some awesome stuff. A lot of it is more like a Japanese reality TV show - and Japanese TV is fucking WEIRD! But it really shows all of the members’ personalities, and they all get their moment to shine. Some of it feels staged and kinda low budget, but is has a lot of heart.
Their ‘instructor’ Mori-sensei made them take these fake exams, called “NENDO TESTS” where they have to answer basic knowledge type questions which he then grades afterwards. He then roasts all the members one-by-one for their weird answers. Very entertaining!

I think there are some things I need to clear up because I think you were mislead a bit involuntarily. SG isn't at all what you said it was. It actually IS a school, just not a school where you learn math, history, science and all that stuff. It's a school that trains girls how to become idols or models or something else in the entertainment business. It was sponsored and financed by Amuse, which is, I think, the biggest entertainment company in Japan. So most of these girls were training to become JPop idols. There are some strict rules when these girls are in this school. I don't think they're allowed to have social media (they still aren't even now even though Babymetal is HUGE), they're not allowed to have boyfriends, and they had to keep their grades in regular school above a certain threshold. So these girls had to really work to be allowed to attend this school. I don't know if it's true, but I remember reading somewhere that at one point Moa was getting close to getting in trouble with the school because of her grades in regular school. I don't know how true that is though. It might just be something somebody had said at one point. I cant recall where I read that.
I don't think the school is just 3 years per say. From what I've come to understand (and somebody like roadrunner, or Jake Muller, or Grington300 will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure, they know FAR more than I know), is that the girls graduate from the school when they turn 15. It's at this point that they choose what they want to do, and Amuse will try and find them a spot in whatever they choose to do if it isn't already found.
I also have found it funny how Moa was crying (Yui actually was crying during certain periods of the song too, but she's a bit strong than Moa emotionally since she had a lot of hardship taking place for a while when she was in SG, so for her, this isn't as big a deal as what she had to go through before). There's also a TH-cam video of the girls performing at a Babymetal concert (again, don't remember which one and I don't have the link), where they all think it's going to be the last time they ever perform together and that now that Su had just graduated they thought Babymetal was going to end and you can see Moa is visibly upset and is crying again. Thankfully things are still going strong!
SG shut down during covid and never reopened sadly. It finished by ensuring those last students graduated and had stopped accepting new students, I wish they kept going as I think they were doing a good thing and they were teaching a lot of good things for these girls. All these girls have been taught how to be proper ladies and have been shown how to behave properly in the spotlight and to keep their humility and dignity. I truly think they were doing a good thing.
I'm not too sure what Nendo means, but since you wanted to see more of the girls like this I HIGHLY recommend (literally... I can't recommend this enough!!) reacting to the Nendo Tests. They're very funny, you get to see ALL the girls personalities more, and they're a lot of fun to watch. This is a very crude comparison, but it's the best I can think of right now, and it's actually quite accurate. Have you ever seen how a service dog is when it doesn't have it's uniform on? Well, in case you haven't, most of them become regular dogs. They're playful, they like sniffing things, and running, and all the things regular dogs do. But once you put their uniform on, they know it's time to get to work and they become a COMPLETELY different animal. It's kind of similar with Su. While I'm calling her a dog by any means, I AM saying Su is a goofy, clumsy, kinda nerdy, young woman, who, when she was still in SG, didn't dance very well at all, and it was actually really cute to see her trying as she was long and lanky and uncomfortable in her body at that time. She was also a bit of a scaredy-cat.
Anyhow, hopefully that helps out a bit mostly I wanted to correct you on how the school ran because it was actually quite strict and tough on the girls. There are some TH-cam videos where the girls would perform their end of year concert and the teachers weren't happy with how the performance was going and inbetween "scenes" would really bear into the girls and tell them that they're not performing up to standard. It shows how hard students work in Japan and how difficult and abrasive the teachers are with their students compared to here in North America. In the end, the students become very strong and aren't so easy to break. I think long-term it ends up being good for the students. They become like tempered steel.

@cyberbrynnhildr1053 yea they cared for sure I think, but they could also be very hard on the girls too. They weren't careful, or diplomatic with their criticisms to the students, which you can see during the SG concerts back stage inbetween acts.
