*TIPS/HACKS* -APPLY TO AS MANY SCHOLARSHIPS -rent an apartment with preferably 3 others (so rent can be cheaper)... maybe with 2 bed so 2 ppl in 1 room -learn how to cook basic/quick/cheap dishes before leaving for college -get a job during summer -make friends with ppl who have a car just in case you need a ride somewhere -share books with friends -there's a fee for college health insurance, if you already have insurance, tell them so you can save $$$ -don't miss deadlines, unless you want to lose $$ -make sure to talk to a councilor / therapist bc most students get depressed... it's normal. do not feel bad about it. -don't get a credit card, bc you do not want to lose control... -only take loans that you NEED, not WANT ! -make a study group of at most 4... unless you want study sessions to turn into hangouts :( -if you're dorming... don't over pack -get active... unless you want to experience freshman 15... or 20 haha GOOD LUCK! .... I need it... going to college this fall :)
1) I’m the friend with a car and 2) I have insurance under my moms plan that I’ll tell the college about but im not gonna use it unless it’s an emergency
if you're still in highschool you can take community college courses for free. most highschool counselors won't directly tell you about it unless you ask. it's basically like taking an AP course but way easier!
I agree, take as many classes at a community college as you can!!! It saved me so much money and time; plus I had an amazing advisor there, unlike the one at my university.
currently in college and you should definitely get a good pair of noise cancelling headphones. definitely good for long nights study in the library or even in your room when you don't want to hear your roommates
I know that for studying, I find it helpful to review all the material, in a preliminary sense, find out what I don't know much about or don't fully understand (or am struggling with), and I emphasize studying on that material with notecards/study buddies/asking for the prof's help to re-explain it/etc... It saves a lot of time and helps you become more well-rounded and prepared for exams in comparison to trying to cram everything into your head, all at once.
I really didn't think i was going to go to college being the youngest also. when i signed up for FAFSA i noticed how much i would get. Total life saver.
How to survive college is not to attend. 😂😂 just kidding. 1. Do your work asap. 2. Take advantage of your teachers office hours and tutoring. 3. Apply apply for scholarships. 4. Make friends in case you miss class they could help you catch up. Have fun it's college.
My "hack" is going to community college for the first two years. It's a whopping 5k for the entire year and I'm gonna be in less than $10k debt when I graduate, plus I get my degree from the college I transfer to 😉
I'm a senior, and all of these are so true!! This is stuff I wish I knew my freshman year and had to figure out myself. I HIGHLY recommend #9. Do not take advisors for granted. I wasted so much time taking pointless classes because I didn't take the time to meet with an advisor. Also... look into study abroad!! They are some of the cheapest trips you can get (you can get study abroad scholarships as well)... something I definitely regret not doing, and now it's too late!
In the UK, you go and do your degree and then you pay back the money through student loans once you start working. I didn't realise it was different in the US
ChelleBelle you can do it that way here too. We go through financial aid then take out loans for the rest and pay it back six months after we graduate/when we get a job
I'm so glad you made this video! I'm in college and I have done most of this stuff and it helps a lot! There's people out there who are first generation going into college and this is highly beneficial! Great job 💖💖💖
Because of you, I might be going to my dream college. I'm currently in community college, but I want to transfer to go in to my state college. I've been to scared a nerve racking about applying for my FAFSA for the 2nd time. I watched your video and I realized I need to do this now or I'll never do it. So I just finished over Half of my FAFSA for the 2018/19 School year! Thank you! 💕💕
Jeanine, I LOVE your personality bc I know how u feel about going to college for several reasons: 1. I am the youngest of 4 girls and I want to make my mom proud 2. I'm 17 and I just got graduated 2 months ago at my secondary school and I'm going to community college[Technical] 3. I try my best to save money so I can buy school supplies for college [$1100] to be exact 4. I, like I said, try to save money so I can buy a phone and laptop [however they need fixing] The tips that you give us is a big deal and I hope you will stay strong. You're kind, caring, smart, independent and helpful. P.S Have some good time in college.
I love'd this video! Im going to start my senior year next year, but I like to learn things about college. Ever since I began watching your channel you have inspired me sooooo much! God bless you girly :)
So I'm just finding out about this channel. I think it was in my suggested videos to watch list. Anyways. I'll be headed to college this upcoming August, and this video was so helpful you don't even understand. There is so much appreciation flowing through me right now. Thank you!
This video was so beneficial even though I am still not in college. Sometimes, these rules also apply to high school years! Thanks Jeanine for that!!! :)
For me community college was definitely the slower route. It did save time but it took so much longer. Our community colleges were super impacted so your first couple of semesters you could only take a couple of classes & I would say they were harder than a normal university. But I saved tons of money so yea it was worth it.
In college, uni or community college you are expected to be organized, so choose whichever system of organizing your notes and papers best suit you. In addition all you need is pen, pencils and some paper. And I would recommend five star, because you never know how much notes you will take. Even though I'm claustrophobic of wasting paper, instead I would I suggest balancing paper with word documents so that it will be kind of easier. Although, recording notes is not that helpful and will be confusing at all once you start studying.
kaisoo fl. Stay organized. Even if it says optional, do it (nothing is optional!). Go out of your comfort zone (even if you think you may not get into a school, apply! I was accepted into my dream school even though I thought I wasn't going to be).
kaisoo fl. start your essays over the summer! trust me, if you have all your essays done you'll be super thankful during your first semester. also, make sure you ask your teachers for reccomendation letters!
im a freshman in high school & im already taking college classes at acc here in austin. i go to an early college school. this is so helpful!!! thank you!!
omg i loved this so much! im so happy to be attending UT this upcoming fall! hook 'em!! could you do a video about ur experience as an rtf major or film school in general? and also more videos about UT bc there arent any good videos out there :(
Another tip from someone who studied memory in my master's program. Try to study in the same environment as you will be taking the exam. When you are actually taking the exam, having the surrounding environment be similar to where you studied will help you recall your information better. If you are able to study in the same room and seat as you will take the exam, that will make for optimal results. (this means no music of any type, unless your professor plays music during the exam.) Again, everyone is different and people who study in their beds or study with music might do equally well as someone who studies at a desk with no music. The majority of people will excel with the recommendation above. I am happy to provide sources for those interested in reading 11 15 page research articles :)
These tips are so helpful. I'm a freshman in community college because even though I got into my top school, I would have had to take out big loans. Can you make a video, or just give advice about, transferring from community college. For instance, the applications process, transfer essay, credit transferability, adjusting as a transfer
Take up as many extra credit opportunities as you can. Even if you are getting an A in the class, it would help out. As well as going to your professors during their office hours for help. They are more than happy to help and want you to succeed in the class as much as you do.
Could you please do a video on everything you need to know about college. Like the classes and everything about it. And I LOVED THIS VIDEO SUPER BENEFICIAL
the community college is a HUGE thing, especially if you live in Chicago. If you graduate from a CPS school, you can go to a Chicago community college (CCC) for two years for free. the first two years are just all about the cores subjects, the last two years are for your major. The most importantly for the majority of college no matter, where you are studying for a major, concentration or following a program of study. To emphasize, study as much as you can in order to keep track on time, and always meet your advisor first of the semester. If you had any concerns or questions about classes you will take next year of 2018. The reason you should study as much is because that will help many students to do well. In addition help keeping yourself focused, and put aside the work for yourself, friends or spending all the day for maybe doing art, working on a new chapter, and maybe trying out a new workout. Study and learn actively, smart, and efficiently, and not the improper way like highlighting the whole textbook or reading a whole chapter. Instead break down the chapter and paragraphs, use post it notes and post on the sections so that will trigger your mind of the notes, questions you had while reading.
All I know is, select classes that are in the later part of the day. I would do this so that I can sleep in, and/or get a part-time job. Seems like that would be helpful.
Tips: -Join Bing rewards and stuff like that online for free Amazon and Starbucks giftcards. -Rent books online. DO NOT BUY. -Ask people who took the course a semester before to see if they will sell you the book cheaper...and get their notes, etc. -Start paying on your loan as early as you can. Even if it's just paying towards the interest. -Get to school early for better parking. -Try to schedule your classes based on where they are located at school to make sure you're not late to them, if possible. -Ask your professors questions after class and tell them your name so they may recognize you during final grades....attendance and a name-to-face can go a long way. -Always do as much bonus work as it's offered!

Thank you or the wonderful tips and wise words! This will really help me as I'm from England, London and I have 2 years left in high school - I'm in Year 10 so I have my last year to go and then off to College!!
This could also work for anyone ..if you put an essay into google translate it can read it back to you. Never knew this until my first year in college and wished I knew of this trick throughout grade school
*TIPS/HACKS*

Another tip from someone who studied memory in my master's program.
Try to study in the same environment as you will be taking the exam. When you are actually taking the exam, having the surrounding environment be similar to where you studied will help you recall your information better.
