This video helped me so much with making my first walking skirt!😊 Without it I don't think I could did it. Now I'm making my second and plannig to do a lot, lot more. Thanks a lot, there aren't much youtubers in historical costuming community who actually provide explanations to the process. Again, thanks a lot🥺
I made this pattern as a blsck sil skirt. Sewing was a horror -always slipping off. But the finishes skirt is a masterpiece too. Thank you for your help and introduction with this tutorial
Love this skirt! I always want one but I don't feel comfortable with garments that sit at my waist so always opt for Regency (and now Italian Renaissance!) lines, but I'm getting closer to the walking skirt! Edit to add: my seven year old daughter LOVES your doggies!
Thank you! It is difficult to have a heavy skirt sit at the waist, but the corset really takes the weight and makes it easier to wear one. I totally get it though! Def worth it if you can work your way to it. Awww, that's so sweet! They are adorable pups 💚
@@AbiSueCostumes Redthreaded is having a pattern sale so I'm thinking of making myself a corset for the first time! I've only made one for my daughter before, which was like being on easy mode because she was six at the time, so pretty much no curves to work around! I imagine I'd feel better about garments sitting at the waist with a corset on!
I’m shocked that I like the look of the contrast binding along the hem, it usually looks silly on pattern envelopes. Your helpers are adorable! It might be a good idea to fuse your pattern pieces you use a lot to some freezer paper to protect them from further destruction. Costuming Drama has a great tutorial on that. You would also have to remove the Scotch tape before you do that, though, because using an iron on it will cause the tape to contract (I learned that the hard way).
I know right? You would think with how bright the red is, it wouldn't look so great, but it turned out to be the best idea ever! Thank you! They are def cuties haha. And interesting, I might have to look into doing that with a few that I use a lot, since the standard patterns are just so easy to rip lol.
Just stumbled onto your video/channel. Very nice dog choice in the opening shots, I have the tri color and the black n white variety. I had to train them to not step(run) onto the paper/board mat for pining and marking patterns, they'll lay down right at the edge with a paw tip touching the cardboard.
Love the skirt, i so want one now..Looking forward to the jacket..your fur babies are adorable. I'm enjoying your channel, only just found you, your music choice very relaxing.. Clear voice easy to follow instructions. Now i just need to go back and watch your other videos.. :)
Thank you so much! I appreciate the feedback, I've been working on making my videos better, so yay! My pups just love to be involved lol, they will be a mainstay here 😂
how many times bigger, should the skirt be for the waist? sorry english's not my mother language, i dunno if you understand what i'm trying to say. but if i do want to make some fold for my skirt ?
I think adding half of your waist measurement, maybe less, would likely work to add some pleats in the back. I added a couple inches on each side I think to the pattern that that already had some gathering space in the back.
No worries! It's Butterick 5970, which is a pattern for a skirt and bodice separates, the skirt part has been amazing. I've made the bodice up once so far too.
Of course! And I think it has higher sizes, but there are some pretty easy ways to size up a pattern if needed, I've had to do it because my size wasn't available before.
That's awesome! It might be intimidating at first, but the skirt part of the pattern is a little easier than the bodice, so you should be able to get through it!
The placket is the rectangle of fabric that I attached to the other side of the back opening of the skirt. It's for modesty, when you don't use a zipper, and you use hook and eyes or snaps, it's nice to have that extra piece of fabric so anything underneath doesn't show. A felled seam or a flat-felled seam is when you cut one side of the seam allowance to about half of the width of the other side, then you fold the large side around the small side to encase the raw edges, then you stitch that edge down, you can hand sew it so it doesn't show on the other side, or you can machine sew it. I think it's also called felling when you iron both seam allowances flat and then wrap each edge under to encase the raw edges and machine or hand sew them down.
Very nice. I have that pattern, but it's really nice to see someone actually make something from it to really see what it looks likes. Also was the #HomeForTheHolidays a Costube thing? I keep hearing about Costube and Costubers and have asked a couple of people but haven't gotten a reply. I'm a cosplayer and am getting into more historical costuming and have a channel and would like to participate in these fun projects, but I never hear about them until it's too late.
Thank you! The pattern can be daunting because of all the pieces, but I find the skirt part very easy to work with. I've made the bodice as well. And yes, there is a #HomeForTheHolidays playlist that one of the costube channels created. The costube group is on Facebook and Instagram, from the sounds of it you qualify to join! I can send you a link.
I just ordered this pattern along with Butterick B4954 and yaya han cosplay. I'm so happy that I finally have the courage to do a project like this on my own. Thanks, I will try to follow your instructions. Can you tell me why you put the green fabric inside? My English isn't as good as to understand everything by the first time watching.
Very cool! I do like that pattern for my Edwardian skirts. So the green fabric is the flannel interlining that the pattern calls for. Interlining helps to stiffen the hem for a better movement and weighs the hem down as well so it's not flying everywhere when you walk. It's different from flatlining, which I also do, that's the white lining fabric.
What a perfect tartan for a Christmas holiday outfit 😄👍🏻 My mother had a “Christmas dress” in a very similar tartan.
Yes! That's essentially what I hope to wear it as, Christmasy wintery goodness

The corgi has just gained you a new subscriber. Love that breed.
Awww thanks! Diana is adorbs, she's usually at the end of all my videos plus cameos throughout 💚

So happy I could help! The slipping always sucks ugh, bit I'm glad you were able to make it through, love this pattern!
Thank you for showing so may of the steps can’t wait to try and will be hand stitching the whole thing ( will be my very first project!) wish me luch
Happy to help, and that sounds amazing, good luck with your project!
Well done

Oh yay! Yeah I posted this skirt recently in a few groups 💚
@@AbiSueCostumes I recognised the skirt, can't wait to see the jacket. X

Could this be made in a thick corduroy, i wonder?
@@kellysouter4381 that seems very possible, thick fabric like wool is used a lot, so I don't see why not
