Such a beautiful skirt! Thanks for explaining, especially the facing of the bottom. I reckon the difference in length is not due to any error on your part but more that the linen stretched xhere cut on the bias. I have had it happen to me with linen, and on such a length of fabric, it can easily come up to several inches of stretching. This is why it is so important to let the cut pieces hang for a while. I think Bernadette Banner had the same issue once for a skirt, with wool, and the surplus was also several inches long! She suggested to recut the fabric pieces according to the pattern pieces after the hanging time.
I am sooo grateful that you showed the gems and how you dealt with them! This sort of thing happens to me all the time. Very nice to see that I’m not alone. Thank you!
Love Bernadette Banner, you both make sewing not be intimidating... Mine is staring at me judgementally right now... a pair of dungarees... Anyway. What is the skirt you are wearing? Love the fabric and color!
I just got some plaid wool suiting in the mail that wasn’t quite what I thought it was going to be, and isn’t suited for the project that it was intended for, so I started searching TH-cam for “wool plaid skirt”, and came upon your video. I realized that I actually have this pattern, so this will happen! I’m all about the lazy nod to historical accuracy. :)
Its gorgeous, love it when you do sewing videos. This one is no exception, you suit the style so well and I am sure Bernadette would be proud, short cuts or not, its about making it suits your needs of now. Love it ❤❤❤
Thanks. I’m going to be buying this pattern and found your video really helpful. I’ve never bought or followed a paper pattern in my life so am researching like crazy. I’m quite intimidated by most of the stuff on TH-cam but your relaxed approach made me feel so much more positive about the project. I think you’re really brave using linen!
Thank you for sharing, Kristin. So beautiful. I love that you share your whole process; I am a new sewer and my projects so far are all problematic, but I am still making muslins and adjusting them to create a working go-to pattern. So seeing the zigs and the zags of more accomplished sewists is inspiring and keeps me sitting down at my sewing machine.
Yay! So happy to hear that, Alison. Hah! Mr. Seamripper usually makes an appearance, at least once, for every project I tackle. But the more you sew, the better you get and more you'll be able to reach for these little fixes/workarounds when you hit a speed bump. 😉 Keep at it!!
Someone may have pointed this out already (forgive me if they have) when doing a hem facing, if after stitching on the hem binding tape (or grosgrain ribbon) if you stitch just below that on the facing a gathering thread you can spread those little tucks you did over the length of the skirt hem with a very shallow gather - its practically unnoticeable as a gather but it prevents the need for larger tucks. Does that make sense? Anyway, its a gorgeous skirt, I love the fabric you chose even if it is a little slidey! I bet that has been super comfortable this summer. I have a similar skirt planned because it is super flattering on all figures. I am trying to gain the confidence to try to draft a pattern for myself from the Keystone Guide (but I have skirt patterns I can fall back on if the drafting goes badly).
I am a little bit "round" , overweight. I wear 18th y.o. clothing or XL. Does this kind of skirt have that kind of size or if we must be almost a mannequin to be able to sew one?? Where can we buy a pattern like this skirt if I can have my size? Thanks.
Hi Claudette ... This pattern has a relatively wide range of sizes -- it goes up to a size 46" waist / 56" hip. The pattern is by Truly Victorian trulyvictorian.info/index.php/product/tv291-1898-walking-skirt/ 😊
Hi Claudette, I'm round too, and I'm collecting walking skirts because they look gorgeous. While I cannot vouch for this pattern, there are many easy to follow tutorials on TH-cam. I really enjoy one where the sewist only uses 2 meters of fabric, but I can't remember the name of the channel. I prefer using a little bit more fabric to get the right "swoosh", but that's up to each person. Maybe you could also look up a pocket full of poseys? She is a lovely shapely lady and shows her stunning skirts in her shorts. Stunning inspiration to me. I hope this will give you the courage to try a walking skirt of your own, best of luck!
Just found your channel-video recommended from the TH-cam algorithm. Lovely cat! Does s/he like to 'help' lay on your projects or play with the fabric clippings? I made this skirt recently and had issues with the bottom length too, but because I used a printed fabric and had to re-cut half the pieces so they went in the correct direction and ran out of fabric (piecing is period!) so length was off until I trimmed and hemmed at the end.
I just found you channel during a search on how to make long shirts (like the one you made in this video) but at a beginner level. I found some supper simple ones for turning jean pants into skirts which probably wont be to expensive to bring to the dry-cleaners to get constructed; but I would love to learn how to hand sew (I don't own any fancy sewing tools just needles and thread and a few pairs of medical shears). Do you happen to have any such videos that are simple enough for some that has never sewed to be able to follow along with?
Nice video, the skirt came out great! I’m not sure if that’s up to you but I got 7 times an ad-break which was way too much for my taste. Idk it really made the video less enjoyable because I also wasn’t able to skip at least a few of them :/

I enjoyed watching you make the skirt. It is beautiful. This style of clothing really suits you

You're far too hard on yourself. This is lovely work. Well. Done.

ooohhh ... I'm dying to make a walking skirt! ... I was looking at Truly VIctorian Walking skirt the other day ... I'm sold!
OMG, that is gorgeous. There seems to be no end to your talent. You really rock that style. Stay safe.

Hi this skirt came out beautifully and I'm considering making one for myself and was wondering how many yards of fabric it took?
It is beautiful!

Gorgeous!!
Bias tape?? I haven’t sewn clothes in years but that’s how most hems were made.?? By the way, gorgeous.
Love it 💗

Love your skirt. As an older person it's so great to see that the art of personal sewing as opposed to the mass produced is being kept alive.
