This was awesome! I love seeing research on TH-cam, especially mental health related topics! Love how you covered it and hopefully you’ll make more vids like this in the future as this was great!
Oddly enough, I first heard of this from the 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal Lecter shows of his sense of smell by remarking on a nearby patient. "'Can you smell his sweat? That peculiar goatish odor is trans-3-methyl-2 hexenoic acid. Remember it, it's the smell of schizophrenia." Not a scientific source, but it's where I first heard about it.
Diagnosed schizophrenic, not taking the piss. I've always drank an insane amount relative to other people, and recently i heard something about some schizophrenics tending to feel thirstier and drinking more, if you're very adequately hydrated to even over hydrated i can't imagine that's making you sweat LESS, assuming that it's even true and not just a coincidence. That said, my source on the thirst thing is "i heard it one time somewhere that i don't remember" which is about as good as "it came to me in a dream" so grain of salt and all that.
The feeling thirstier thing could also be related to the meds. I was wrongly put on zyprexa for 3 years for a misdiagnosis completely unrelated to psychotic disorders. And I was sooo thirsty all the time. No matter how much I drank
this is so funny...been schizo for49 years and no smell...ok let me do a test.. let me try and sniff my arse like a dog....errrmmm no smell lol.. better not do that again nearly broke my back.. hahahhaahja... smells in the hospital wards in the 60s and 70s where lack of hygene caused by hospital staff not giving a fuck about there patience.. love your vlogs xxxxxx
My whole adult life sometimes at the end of a shower id catch a herby pine needles kind of smell on myself (i thought it was all the flavinoids or whatever in the weed i smoked coming out in sweat or something) and then recently i realised my mum who never smokes also smells like it, shes not diagnosed with a psychotic disorder but whenever i talk about mine shes like "oh yeah thats normal" so idk weird, what a thing to think about
I mean I can understand if someone is really psychotic and they haven’t been bathing or I guess catatonic (the staying motionless thing for hours sometimes right?) so in those cases especially if people around them haven’t wised up that something is wrong, I can understand how someone could smell…. Surely if you’re really catatonic the hospital staff or someone would give you a sponge bath yes? There’s no way it’s legal them to just let you sit in your feces and etc and just let you snap out of it?
In my early days of Schizophrenia I thought I smelt something burning. Now looking back, it might of been marijuana. I can't remember that far back though. Does anyone smell something burning due to mental illness or was it just me?
Hey why don’t you reach out to some psych ward staff and maybe help educate the public on their side of caring for mentally ill patients? I think it could be interesting!
Thank you for talking about this Michelle! Youre awesome
Thank you for watching!

As weird as it may sound, I kinda hope it’s true. It would explain a lot for me.
😢
Bullshit, i am shizoprenic and my hygiene is pretty high
this video talks about hygiene not being the culprit for the smell

very interesting!
"Study", rather much more publish or perish... i am fed up with that "scientists"
Alright

Talking about modern day hospitals not asylums of yore
@@EJ1443 That makes sense but these studies seem to claim its not about hygiene

That could be an olfactory hallucination.
burning smells are also associated with seizures and epilepsy

I like that idea 😀
