Bring back the tradition of carrying colourful animal lanterns as well for children. Hope to see all these cultural traditions upheld and creativity expanded upon. More light / lantern shows in the evening. In temperate climates, this festival is more significant as the weather gradually gets colder, warm lights make people feel cosier and homely.

As a Vietnamese, I could recommend you to buy mooncake from old-school bakeries. If Singapore have Tai Chong Kok, then we have Bảo Phương, Bà Dần in Hanoi, Đông Phương in Haiphong and Như Lan, Nam Việt and Phương Diêm Thuận in HCMC.
Aside, these snowskin mooncake have been a part of Vietnamese traditional mooncake since unknown time, and they are bloody good lol

Every year without fail before we married, he would buy them for my parents and he certainly agrees it has the most simple packaging but yet still it has the best taste! I think it’s important to acknowledge the origin of mooncake / 月饼and moon festivals/ mid autumn festivals / 中秋节which can be traced all the way back to ancient times in mainland china( with archaeological evidences and literature document). Those beautiful traditions accompanies by poetries (水调歌头),songs and dances are brought to many parts of the world by Chinese immigrant such as Singaporeans .
Although due to the CCP mainstream western English speaking media or YT is willing to celebrate or mention much of it. It’s such a shame culture has to be ties with politics.

I'm a foreigner but live in one of the many North American city with strong a Chinese diaspora community and I love regular moon cakes so so much. Every year I get excited for Mid-Autumn Festival when the Asian grocery stores all start carrying mooncakes so I can pick them up anywhere instead of going to the specific chain of bakeries that carry just the lotus or red bean ones year round. The only novelty one I've tried had pineapple filling and I was so disappointed! It tasted and more importantly FELT completely different from the hearty seed or bean paste I'm used to, it was basically a completely different treat, more like a fig newton or something, not worth it! Mid-Autumn Festival is a special time and I don't mind traditions evolving, as long as they don't fully displace wonderful, original creations like "plain" mooncakes. I had a hell of a time trying to find some with salted egg yolk for my British husband to try, as they've been selling out since the shelf space is limited and the novelty mooncakes take up more and more space every year, and he agrees with me and Mr. Ham, salty, sweet, bitter, it's all there and it's the best!

Tradition being a fluid thing is a really interesting concept. Although, in countries like Italy, food traditions are really fucking hard to die because they are supported by citizens of that country.
Whereas the weakness of this mooncakes situation seems to be that Singaporean, on par of some other Asian populations, are quite fixated on trying the next new thing easily forgetting about the past.
Showing off on social media also doesn't help the traditional products that are seen as obvious and uninteresting.
I believe a cultural campaign to give importance to traditional food (and not only) is really needed.

Mooncakes are overpriced cr*p. Just refined sugar & lots of additives. I wouldn’t even buy it. At Hai Di Lao, they gave us a small one on the actual day. I left it at the table.
My cousin gave my mum a durian snow-skin mooncake. I only tried 1/8 of it. And that’s enough mooncake for a year.
I’m 43kg & I lead a healthy lifestyle. Many say they indulge only ‘once a year’. But those who say that also indulge in themselves too often on other stuff & their health suffers.
Of course Mr Ham would say the obvious, since he wanna emphasize the fact that established brands don’t have to waste time on packaging. Still, if you think about it, mooncakes are just lame products of some fake myths that ppl continue to perpetuate.
And it has become so commercialized that ppl have to gift mooncakes to show their partnership. Even if they gift Tai chong Kok’s mooncake, I’ll find it excessive.
My bro-in-law’s housing agent is good friends with all of us and he just helped to sell my in-laws’ house recently. He bought mooncakes for my in-laws & bro-in-law. We told him firmly we don’t want mooncakes not because we are standing on ceremony but because we don’t have sweet tooth.

man... u must be fun at parties... i mean if u want to be a pessimist and a downer u can say that about any holiday... why do ppl spend hundreds of dollars on a christmas tree to be thrown out a month later? Well if u think about it then christmas trees are just another lame product of some fake myths that ppl continue to perpetuate....

to be more precise ,why are ' SINGPOREAN CHINESE ' obsessed with mooncakes?
i'm pretty sure majority of singaporean malays/indians don't give a damn about mooncakes.

As a singaporan chinese , i concur with this statement. I dont think Malays or Indians care so much about mooncakes which originated from China

There’s always a choice in increasing the prices of what he’s selling. So it really depends on his ideology.

Cos he’s lame. Mooncakes are just lame products of some fake myths that ppl continue to perpetuate. They’re also processed food with lots of refined sugar which does our health no favor.
I wouldn’t even eat it if gifted it, much less fork out my own $.
I’ve received quite a few. It’s rude to reject gifts. But I’ll leave the mooncakes in their packaging below my house for less discerning folks to pick it up.
