  • We drive the 2024 Buick Envista to find out if it's the BEST budget crossover you can buy?
This is the 2024 Buick Envista and it’s one of the nicest and most stylish premium crossovers I’ve seen this year, in fact for a very long time. It’s a compelling proposition, has a very appealing price, and is made in Korea, so today I’m going to test it and see what it’s like.
The Envista slots below the Buick Encore GX, filling a gap created by the discontinuation of the entry-level, Encore, which wasn’t a great car, its short wheelbase made for jiggly progress wherever you went. . This one is not an Encore successor, because the upgraded looks and better driving dynamics make it a brand-new car.
Size wise it's nearly a foot longer than the Encore GX and rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, which is 4.1 inches longer than the Encore's providing a decent 97 cubic feet of passenger space.

    Under The Hood
Now for the bad news, all Envistas drive their front wheels only using GM’s turbo 1.2-liter with three-cylinders, it makes 137 hp and 162 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed auto. The good news is it’s fairly fuel-efficient offering 32 mpg on the highway, the bad news is it's slow taking a yawn-inducing 9+ seconds to get to sixty.
It seems odd that they didn't use the 1.3 liter instead which has more power and torque and is a lot less pedestrian. I can only think Buick is saving that for a more sporty model. Hmm.
The driver has two screens, directly ahead is an 8.0-inch digital cluster that can be configured using a scrolling control on the steering wheel. You can choose from two different views and also access MPG, range, and other ancillary gauges.
The touch screen in the center is connected to the driver display as one single pane and is an 11.0-inch unit that responds well and has cool graphics with an easy-to-decipher menu structure. The dash materials are decent and are of a textured nature with blue stitching, but below that, there's plenty of hard plastic but nothing you wouldn't get in a car costing thousands more.
The heated seats are some of the best, in fact on more than one occasion I had to turn them down because they were too hot. There's also a charging icon on the main screen that shows you if your phone is charging or not, a nice feature.

We took four adults, and the car fully loaded on a two day trip. It wasn't blunted. It performed greatly! You need to try this with your impressions.

I think you're missing the point of this whole car... The point is to give people something that's affordable rather than having them shell out 50 grand for a car... If you want all those things you can buy them it'll just cost you a whole lot more money

Why make a 3 cylinder that only gets 28-32 miles a gallon? There are some 4 cylinders that get that kind of milage.

Is it $29,000 or $27,000? The description lists the lesser price.
And Buick does excel at heated seats. My Verano is toasty on the high level.

Excuse me for bringing it up. Your presentation is so informative. Well done.
Has this engine been used enough to gauge it's reliability? Does the 1.3 have a track record?
The turbos concern me. The power is less important to me than longevity.
      Thanks again 👍

Thanks! I don’t have any data on reliability of the tiny turbo 3s but they are no worse or better than a 4 cylinder turbo.

      @coastalbeer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

A 4 cylinder motor will far outlast a 3 cylinder motor! The 3 cylinder motor has to work harder to match the performance of the 4 cylinder motor. Trust me on this. Think of it as a "team" effort. The bigger the team, the greater effort is issued. It's why V8 motors used to rule the day. Then they figured out the turbo motor and "cheated" the power delivery.

@@coastalbeerI have a Jeep Patriot 2010 with CVT that still run like a charm today and when I bought it reviewers said it was underpowered. It’s perfectly fine even on highways, never felt unsafe passing other cars. Yes it’s a bit slow ramping up on the Highway but there are ramps for a reason. We’re currently considering this car and the Encore GX as our next one. The design is wonderful, we tried them both and like how they go. Just waiting on reliability as it is on the new Trax platform and there’s no data yet.

I paid 22k for the ST and I love it. Yes it doesn’t have the power of my Mercedes AMG but who cares. It’s fine for driving around town. It’s a fun car.

    “This car is under 30k!”
Gripes about cost cutting and materials.
Drags ragged fingernails over every interior surface
“Look how easily the plastic gets scratched!”
“No rear wiper! DAMNED GM BEAN COUNTERS!”
    Lamborghini Urus: No rear wiper.
    Jaguar F-Type: No rear wiper.
    Mercedes GLE: No rear wiper.
It isn’t cost cutting. It was a design choice. Rear wipers aren’t a necessity. Prius Prime doesn’t have one, doesn’t need one.
You can’t praise a vehicle for the OTD price and then grouse about missing features.
I would also like to see a more potent power plant, but that would make the MSRP go up. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. That was true in 1538, still true for MY2024.

I have it, and it has plenty of power. Technology today is top notch...I have owned mustangs all my life and have a heavy foot. It's not a mustang but it has plenty of power compared to the average car. You don't notice the three cylinders

@badele80 The Bronco Sport, I think, has a 3 cylinder also, and everyone that I know that has one loves it. I like the Envista, but I did swear to myself that I would never buy another G.M. anything ever again. For the past 20 years, they've been putting out crap.
