The water balloon tomato made me laugh, I’ve learned to always core or score every tomato 😊 I’ve also learned all that “water” from those tomatoes is actually usable, it’s a weak tomato juice, I use it to make V-8 (or V-15) juice at the end of the season with every odd and end vegetables that haven’t been used, purée them with that tomato water and it’s an excellent juice, soup base or whatever !!! You could use it instead of water to mix into your clear gel. I’m so excited to learn I can thicken ketchup with clear gel instead of cooking it forever !!! Oh and also, if you put a cup or two of water in the roaster then put the pan in, it helps it to cook more evenly and prevents scorching but be careful, steam comes out around the edges. Your children are so fortunate, they will never know just how fortunate they truly are even after becoming adults and being grateful for the life and skills you have given them, you are truly a beautiful blessing ❤
I save my tomato water/juice too. I have learned to use all kinds of leftover liquids and broth. I just used some of mine to cook up some lentil soup and I like to use it for cooking my rice too.
I like to do that too! When I make tomato sauce, I like to dip out the free-flowing watery juice with a ladle while the tomatoes are cooking down, and put it through a regular strainer into a pitcher (so I know how much there is and can get out the right number of jars), and just water-bath can it up (40 min for quarts, 35 for pints, at sea level) with a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of canning salt, and half a teaspoon of citric acid per quart - half those amounts for pints - to drink or use later. I tend to water down all my juices before drinking them anyway, having grown up in a large family where we had to make sure there would be enough juice for everyone to have some, so I don't mind the extra wateriness. :)
Hi Ruthann: you are one hard working woman. I understand that “That 1870’s Homestead” channel with Rachel and Todd, that Rachel has a great recipe for making ketchup. She was so pleased with it as it took her awhile to get it exactly like she wanted it. You may have seen their channel already. But, if you haven’t, I encourage you to pull that recipe up and see what the difference is. Maybe combined, or using something from her recipe will help you arrive at a recipe you will enjoy. I admire the lifestyle you live. You are raising wonderful human beings that know the value of a work ethic. Of course, you and your husband are terrific role models. Enjoy your channel so much!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️
I did a blind taste test of Cheerios and 3 other kinds of that type of cereal with my Girl Scout troop when they were in third grade to see which one to get for a camping trip. I don't remember which one won, but it wasn't the Cheerios!
❤❤LOL😂...We ALL did that. And we put bread from the day old store into bags from the expensive bread, and more!!! Only the grown ups knew and everyone was happy!
@@anthroariel well, I completely understand why she was doing it. I had three brothers that were eating machines. The youngest used a mixing bowl for his morning cereal.😳
When I thaw my tomatoes I collect the water and put on a stockpot at rapid boil and it reduces very quickly. What you are left with is an intense and sweet syrup like product that I then return into my recipe. It adds so much flavor back to the product. Love your videos. Tfs.
Hi RuthAnn and sweet family! Your ketchup looks amazing to me and it is nice and thick. Thank you for sharing how to make ketchup. I hope everyone has a very blessed weekend!

I am so blessed to have found your channel. I didn’t grow up canning or doing any type of food preserving , now at 67 yrs old I learned that skill. I am not an expert canner but happy to learn. You are who I wish I was when younger, skilled in homesteading. But is never too late.😊❤❤
Good morning! Once again your video is beautiful. It warms my heart to see your family all gathered together. My mother came from a large family who all gathered like this. This was passed on to her family and we all gather the same way. It is now such a blessing to see all our children and their children gathered. My sons friends always enjoyed these gatherings also. Blessings on you and yours.
I love your outdoor setup! Ive been showing these videos to my husband so he can make me something like it! Thanks for the ketchup recipe, too (I, too have tomatoes in the freezer!)
This looks like such a great video but Ihave NO time this morning. Weather is good and we are replacing a roof on the goat barn. I'll catch you later, RuthAnn. I just froze a bunch of bags of tomatoes this week so I will love this video... later. Have a wonderful day.
@@Ruthannzimm The video is a keeper! Loved how you made this ketchup. I am definately gonna make this. And I learned about the different canning method! Do you use that on more than just the ketchup?
Thanks for the info about tomatoes! I have 6 gallon bags and counting of home grown Amish paste. 2 bags of better boy 2 of Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes. All in the freezer to do when the weather gets colder and we calm down with hay. I cannot wait to make my own pasta and pizza sauce this year. (It's my first year) I grabbed 2 electric roasters for so cheap at the thrift stores to make it easier.
I have to freeze my tomatoes because they don’t ripen fast enough..I make salsa, tomato sauce, or spaghetti sauce. I did ketchup a few years ago & it called for a ton of sugar. Tasted good but trying to cut back on that stuff. Your recipe sounds better balanced..have a blessed week! That calf is really cute.
Cut up tomato’s while watching, getting ready to put in my roaster. Made your pasta sauce twice now, so good! Now I’ll make ketchup, I have both Amish and Mennonites in my area, so I have benefits of stores that cater to them.
Starting the day off with a great video from you. I always learn something. Although I live in an apartment and not able to have a garden and can it is fun to watch and learn from you
I have 8 bags frozen too that I am going to give to my daughter to make sauce for her family. I love watching your videos. It looks like you have fun hosting your get togethers. The kids will have great memories of those get togethers.
So sad…I tried growing Roma tomatoes this year, hoping to be able to do something very similar…alas, our Summer just didn’t play ball and the few I got are still green and now rotting on the vines due to our rubbish weather. I’m so envious of our American cousins and their bountiful harvests this year! On the plus side, so lovely to see your family - including your Mennonite members - enjoying the results.
My mother made ketchup ONCE! She swore she never would again, and she didn't!😂 I helped her with the canning, and I saw what she went through. She didn't use a thickening agent--that would have saved her some time. I used arrowroot powder in my pie fillings last year, and it did lots better than regular corn starch. It didn't separate. I have used the Therm-Flo also, and it's great. I get it at the German Baptist bulk food store, along with lots of other wonderful items, and shop the farmer's market for things I didn't grow. My 9-year-old grandson and I went there for apples this morning, because he wanted to make applesauce with me. We made 3 quarts for him to take home. And yes, he did help! That will make it taste better. ❤
For the arrowroot powder, is it the same qualities as the modified starch? Im in Australia and we havent been able to get thermflo for a long while now, but arrowroot I could get!
You have definitely have mentioned choosing a heavy bottom pot to prevent scorching. I am actually preferring to freeze my tomatoes before processing, it’s so much easier and not dealing with a stockpot of boiling water:). You have a new clothesline!
I love your videos, can’t wait to try the ketchup recipe. I love how you washed out the freezer bags and hung them on the line. I do the same thing. Your family is amazing!
This week I made tomato paste. I can’t seem to find good quality tomato paste in the shops around me so I thought why not give it a try. Now, I don’t have a garden but there is a farm nearby that grows Roma tomatoes (and other delicious produce) and I know they spray their crop sparingly. I also get their free range chicken. Thanks for giving the tip about the bicarbonate when washing the tomatoes. The tomato paste turned out beautifully and I froze it in an ice cube tray. Thanks for being such an inspiration! ❤
I buy my produce for canning from the Amish families that live nearby. If I can get enough tomatoes, next year, I want to try your ketchup recipe. I've made ketchup, once before, and didn't like it. I save the juice from my tomatoes and freeze or can it. When I can chili beans, I use the juice that I saved instead of buying vegetable broth. I've learned so much from watching your channel. I know it's a lot of work but it inspires me to try different things. Thank you.
Isn't it amazing how many uses for the electric roaster. I've used mine to reduce whole apples and pears and then turned into pear apple sauce. Delish! And a whole lot of other things. I enjoyed this video. I'm laid up so your video is appreciated. God bless
The sun back light of the boys playing.... idylic and stunning videography. I often do my tomatoes this was to save up enough to make my big batch to cook down. As always wonderful learning video. God's blessing on you and your family
Watched your video while cutting, pitting, and cooking plums for plum butter. I'm so excited for my roma tomatoes to ripe. I will try your ketchup recipe. I've been looking for one I can preserve. I love that you wash out and reuse your baggies. I do that, too, and kids think I'm so odd.
What perfect timing! I'm making ketchup & taco sauce this morning & I love seeing how you do it. This will only be my second time. I'm trying your recipe. Love the kids and family life. God bless you for sharing.
Ruthanne, I love seeing your large family together. It reminds me of my childhood going to visit my grandparents in Oklahoma (I'm from IA also!) every summer. My mother had 7 siblings and they and they're families would all come to my grandparents to see us and it would be one big potluck. I married into a family of 12 kids of which my wife is the youngest. We would get together for the holidays with her large family and it was always awesome to see everyone and also eat all of the delicious foods. My mom and all but one of her siblings have passed, my wife's parents have passed and we only gather at Thanksgiving so all that is left is memories now. I am so thankful to have been a part of these large families! Please cherish and enjoy these times as they are always gone too soon.
Oh my sakes. 😮Ruthann. It hurt 💔me to see all that yummy juice go down the drain. That’s good drinking juice. Or soup starter. Or even for the chickens and pigs.
I’m glad you talked about the onion salt near the end of the video because it wasn’t one of the spices you added with the cinnamon, ground cloves, etc.
Your such a good teacher. I’ve seen a couple of Mennonite women put their filled jars in the oven to “can”. Do you ever do that and could you show us how. God is good. 😊
I made tomato sauce this week and used your ideas. Putting the tomatoes through my blender worked! Last week I made tomato soup! I loved the idea of roasting the vegetables first and for the soup, I just put them right into the pot. How wonderful and flavorful.😋
Thanks for this video! I’ve been making our ketchup for a few years now and we prefer it to the store bought brands! I will be trying your recipe next tomato season!
I have frozen tomatoes too, Ruthann, but unfortunately, I have an infection in my wrist and hand at the moment, so I am enjoying a cup of coffee watching your video for now, praying I don't get septic joint again, hope you have a great family visit God bless thanks for sharing with us.
I made catsup this summer for the first time in a long time using your recipe in an earlier video. So sorry I didn't make lots more of it. Thank you for your diligence and kindness in presenting your videos.
Love learning from you. I tackled homemade pasta sauce for the first time last week. (I’m 68)😂 so this old dog learned another new trick. I canned 28 pints this week and it’s delicious thank you
Finally, someone with some common sense in regards to GMO. No, I don’t want GMO in my food. But until I completely stop eating out, the little bit that is added to a meal by using a little cornstarch is not really an issue. Every little bit does help. They have not found a good substitute for non-GMO cornstarch that is in a decent price range.
Shabbat Shalom.! Thank you, for taking time out of your busy schedule to carefully link all of these recipes and teach us a long the way. God bless you and your family. ❤
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Your experience with canning and the different types of produce is just phenomenal. I am looking forward to learning how to start canning myself. Thank you, Mrs. Z
I just want to give you a BIG THANK YOU for the link for the stock pot!! I ordered one but one size smaller. Used it tonight and absolutely loved it. So much so I’m gonna order their whole set of pots and pans! Thank you again!!
Your channel and reduced ad breaks is truly a joy. I also jump off other videos if I see yours. Excellent job! Way to confront a “Karen” comment. I find those comments very annoying and you handled it so well. God bless you and your family for letting us share in your home life. ❤️
This year due to time conflicts, we had to freeze a lot of our garden tomatoes. A couple of weekends ago we were able to process them into tomato water that you can use to cook rice or noodles and a very thick paste. The frozen tomatoes were put into a large pot with a small amount of water and cooked just enough to get the tomatoes thawed and to release their water. We then strained the cooked tomatoes through cheese cloth. This strained water is what we can as tomato water that we cook with. We use a Ball electric tomato strainer that does a really great job separating the skins and the seeds from the pulp and we were left with a rather thick tomato sauce, more like thin paste, that would make wonderful ketchup after you had added the spices, sugar and vinegar with very little cooking needed to thicken it. We were impress and the next time we need to make ketchup, this is what we will be doing. Enjoyed watching your version of ketchup making.
I decided to try pruning my tomato plants for the first time this year. I grow Amish Paste, Opalka, and Roma. Normally, I have many small tomatoes on my plants, but this year, they were fewer and HUGE! I am ridiculously pleased! 😅 Processing is so much easier and faster when they are big! I am enjoying your videos so much. You are very knowledgeable and explain everything so well. 😊
Thanks for the information. I have been overwhelmed with tomatoes this year. Many are in my freezer as we speak. As soon as the growing season is over, catsup is on the agenda. 😊
I love your videos! Might it be possible for you to give us a tour of your outdoor kitchen and how you set it up? How did you set up your hot and cold water at the sink? Where does your sink drain? How do you keep the flies and wasps away? So many questions! 😂 Your outdoor patio, deck, and kitchen are absolutely beautiful! ❤
Hey Ruthann, I learned from market farmers to pick tomatoes when they first blush and ripen indoors... it better ensures consistent undamaged tomatoes. Clearly the Roma or Amish paste are better for sauce and ketchup, but you can't beat a good beefsteak for slicing and salads. 😊
I was on another channel, saw your upload, and immediately swung over. In this crazy world, your channel soothes my weary and cynical soul.

Can’t wait to try your recipe. You are an awesome Teacher. Thank you for all that you do!!! ❤️✝️❤️
Morning!! I love your channel 💕 I always learn from you, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Oh my sakes. 😮Ruthann. It hurt 💔me to see all that yummy juice go down the drain. That’s good drinking juice. Or soup starter. Or even for the chickens and pigs.
It was mostly water.
I thought exactly the same thing!
Perfect timing! I'm making ketchup today! Lol thanks for the great videos, blessings ❤
Yay! Ive been waiting for your "ketchup" video, so, thanks so very much!!!
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and skills, Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I don’t.
It’s not a safe method.
Great video. I have been binge watching your channel since finding you on TH-cam. I love your videos.
Good morning. Wow that’s some nice looking sauce!
Thank you for all your videos. I have learned so much. The ketchup looked delicious
Thank you RuthAnn. Always a wonderful video and it looks so delicious. Your homestead os beautiful ❤
I made tomato sauce this week and used your ideas. Putting the tomatoes through my blender worked! Last week I made tomato soup! I loved the idea of roasting the vegetables first and for the soup, I just put them right into the pot. How wonderful and flavorful.😋
I put a little ground clove in my ketchup. But that’s just me… I learned I liked this when making sauce for my meatloaf
Thanks for this video! I’ve been making our ketchup for a few years now and we prefer it to the store bought brands! I will be trying your recipe next tomato season!
❤❤❤I ADORE YOU RUTHANN, YOU HAVE THE BEST HOMESTEADING VIDEOS OUT THERE ❤❤❤
I have frozen tomatoes too, Ruthann, but unfortunately, I have an infection in my wrist and hand at the moment, so I am enjoying a cup of coffee watching your video for now, praying I don't get septic joint again, hope you have a great family visit God bless thanks for sharing with us.
Love this! Thank you!
Yep… it’s about balance more than totality.
I’m not trying to pick apart your analogy, but Azure sells organic, non-GMO cornstarch, if you’re interested.
Shabbat Shalom.! Thank you, for taking time out of your busy schedule to carefully link all of these recipes and teach us a long the way. God bless you and your family. ❤
I LOVE freezing ripe tomatoes until I have enough for a large batch or run out of freezer space!
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Your experience with canning and the different types of produce is just phenomenal. I am looking forward to learning how to start canning myself. Thank you, Mrs. Z
I love your videos! I think that perhaps the spice used in ketchup is likely to be allspice and a little cloves.
Ruthann I was nearly chewing my nails off waiting for you to use a spatula to clean the sides of the roaster!!! 😂😂😂
Lol
I decided to try pruning my tomato plants for the first time this year. I grow Amish Paste, Opalka, and Roma. Normally, I have many small tomatoes on my plants, but this year, they were fewer and HUGE! I am ridiculously pleased! 😅 Processing is so much easier and faster when they are big! I am enjoying your videos so much. You are very knowledgeable and explain everything so well. 😊
Very nice ❤❤❤Thank you ❤
Thanks for your posts! You’re the best!
I mix the sugar with the perma flow. It’s easier to add without clumping and it doesn’t scorch that way.
Adding sugar AFTER it thickens....you are so smart! Thank you!
Very smart woman, I have always washed out all of my bags, and reuse them. Love your channel.
Thank you, Ruth, for sharing this recipe. ❤I will be trying this out!
I serve my chicken and dumplings at church functions in that same electric roaster!!!!
I’m busy canning pear sauce and watching your catsup video! Thanks for more inspiration!😃
Ruth ann your ketchup looks so good! When Harrison stuck his finger in for a taste, I was wishing I could do that too. Bet it was good!
