My all-time favorite video game, and I say it without shame. I've been playing since 1999, and I didn't know that trick about upgrading all your tools (or Karen!) on Day 1 until today! Thanks for the great tips. Fantastic video!
That’s the great thing about this game - there are so many secrets and things to discover even after years of playing! Thanks for taking the time to leave a nice comment!
As a heads up, I believe this trick only works if she says your dog doesn't seem too bright. If he's smartened up, this as far as I know stops working.
I'm really impressed for how long you've been playing this game! Today is my very first time cause I found it by accident on my Switch and always heard good things about it.
Make sure you do the tool-leveling in the Cafe, NOT the bar. The bar only opens after 6, which means you start accumulating fatigue when using tools. Even if you don't faint from the stamina loss because of water, if your fatigue gets too high, you'll have a cold the next day and miss out on everything-- which cascades into a whole chain reaction of bad if you decide to do it after getting animals.
DON'T: Forget whether C-Down or C-Up puts items in your backpack (C-Down eats the item, C-Up puts it in your backpack) Came back to HM64 since the original N64 version, and immediately made that mistake, eating a large, presumably rare fish I had spent all morning trying to catch T_T
Also this is one a lot of people don't know, but the New Year Festival is a drinking CONTEST and the goal is to be the last one standing. And you can train for it by buying the jar from Rick and then using it on the underground cellar wine barrels (takes a bit to get the right angle). Being able to out-drink everyone counts toward your score at the end of the game.
This is a great video, Hm64 was also my first harvest moon! I will say that I believe the horse cannot leave the farm in this game. I don't think you can ride him around town. Also, You can put items in to your bag by using i believe up c (youll have to look at what that is mapped to on the switch, idk.) but you have to open your bag to take things out. you can also eat things by pressing down c. and the left and right c buttons call your dog and your horse.
Technically your horse can leave the farm… during the horse festival, haha. And yeah, someone else commented that you can put items in your bag by pushing up on the right stick! That’s a bit of a time saver right there!
You can also ship items directly from your hands to the crate by using your horse. Whistle for the horse using right stick left, it will come running and you can just deposit your harvested items into the saddle bag on the horse. But be careful you might also drop said items on the ground
@@deeperth8679before getting the greenhouse, I would harvest outside then go into the barn and deposit into the crate there. After you get greenhouse, basically time doesn’t matter as much with respect to your money making ability, it’ll be almost no time wasted.
Yeah, so many games these days just throw this aspect of the game out the window! HM64 is actually really fast and exciting when compared to most modern farming sims.
The tool tips is mental it's the first time I've heard it! Also my tip is to avoid wasting time, go in the barn to load the bin instead of doing it outside, that way you don't lose time loading them in the bin 😊
I love how with this game, you can do EVERYTHING right and not make any mistakes and still not get a perfect game. It is CRAZY hard! In all the times I've played, I've only ever had one perfect game.
What a great game! It was my first Harvest Moon game. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that's worth replaying because you may get to see different events, cutscenes, and character dialogue that you missed the previous time! I love games that provide a unique experience each time you play, it's difficult to find games like this nowadays, which is why I'll always love retro games like this. 😊
I didn’t have any gaming consoles until college so it is great that I get to now play games from console generations I missed out on when I was younger. I am excited to try this out!
Apropos of nothing, but hurting your animals with certain tools was a thing in the original. Trust me, I restarted many a day because I accidentally used a hoe on my horse and felt bad about it
Note, you start with 100 energy, and each drink of water restores 3 energy. Your hammer and watering can only take 1 energy per use, but the axe and sickle take more. Finally, if you are power leveling your tools, don't bother with the sickle because having it at a higher level is way less useful early game.
There is a music Box in the field that is on the cross spot of your dog house and tree. The map is in the tree. If you befriend the guy that makes tools he will repair the box for free and it is good to get a huge jump in affection with any girl. It is repeatable as well so you can do it every day once its an option
Always do the 3x3. For one, I'm AuDHD and my brain hates the irregular formations. But two, if you have the all-water can, that means you get that last middle crop on the last harvest of the season!
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but this is my first time playing it and it’s been fun so far, but I had a mishap early on where my chicken died and I couldn’t figure out why. A little tip to everyone, your chicken will only eat from their designated bin if they’re left inside. ^^;
Yeah, this game has some old school mechanics! Each animal has “their own” bin. If you miss a few feedings… RIP. I probably should have mentioned save slates! They have helped even me when I make a mistake here and there.
Every animal has their own space for feeding, but here's a tip, you can leave your chickens outside and they will be fed automatically for free, no need to get chicken food, but you should get chicken food anyways cause you need to get them inside when it's raining or a typhoon is comming, specially on typhoons cause i think they instantly die if they are outside, same with other animals like cows and sheep, just let them be free outside on sunny days and they will get fed automatically and remember to get them inside if next day is raining or a typhoon is comming, have fun!
@@elithegaymer also the animals eat overnight not during the day. So if you’re putting them out in the morning and putting them back in the barn at night thinking they ate, wrong ..
I hope you enjoy the game! The mechanics take a bit of time to get used to, but it works well once you get used to it... Unlike I how I feel about SNES Harvest Moon, haha. With SNES HM, I can't get used to not having a backpack.

Hey, I know you like this game so I just wanted to let you know that I just made an orchestral remix of the opening theme, I would be happy if you could listen to it! 😃
This was my first Harvest Moon game and I love it so much, especially the graphics! I just wish the days were a bit longer. I remember so very well I’d be so relaxed playing this as a kid, but revisiting it gives me anxiety from trying to do so much XD
Yeah, the fast days are good because it makes the pace of the game fast and interesting… but it goes a bit too fast, especially with how long days are in most cozy games these days. I wish it wasn’t so difficult to have a perfect save. I’ve never attempted one because I feel like it would stressful, haha. I absolutely love the graphics and style of this game!
These are good tips, but the water drinking trick for levelling tools 100% does not work, at least not on the original NTSC N64 version I'm currently playing on. No matter how many times I drink water, he still ends up falling over exhausted. Unless you need to drink water after certain reactions (like him wiping his forehead for example) it just seems to mitigate the effects for maybe one or two uses before reverting back to the exhaustion animations.
You can do it if you are healthy. Your character must be sick. You’ll know if you’re sick because your character will wipe his brow the first time you start to do something that day. Eat a medicinal herb before bed and it should work day 2.
@@elithegaymer It's a fresh save file as I just picked my N64 copy up last night. I've found the only real way this method works is if I use a tool until the second reaction (where he looks exasperated) and then drink about 12 glasses of water to get him back to before he wipes his brow. So theoretically it *does* work, but the description provided in the video equates to just "drink some water" which doesn't really break down just how much you need. It's also worth noting that the watering can apparently needs to be filled in order for it to count. An empty can doesn't seem to level up at all in my experience after maybe 50-60 tries.
@@FreakinSweet1987 belated reply but the watering can does level up even if empty and used!! i just did it in my own playthrough (: it's just the watering can takes more uses than the others iirc, out of all the tools. the watering can takes the most amount of points to lvl. i believe in a guide i saw most tools level at 450 swings/uses or so ( i think the hammer levels after 100 ), but the watering can requires 600 uses per level.
But what about hitting your cows until they give gold milk? One of the more interesting bugs in the original game but I doubt they fixed it in this port.
They didn’t even fix the incorrect spelling of their name on the title screen! I’ve tested several bugs and they all work, so I think the game is just a 100% untouched port.
I'm playing for the first time and Im loving it. I'd like to know how to fishing in this game. I release the B button when the fish bites, but nothing happens! Also, how can I get the horse if I miss it on the first day? Can I leave chickens outside all the time?
You have to be really quick with releasing the B button when fishing. Playing on the switch, I have better luck catching fish when I'm playing the switch as a handheld. For some reason when I try to use the controllers while the switch is on my TV I have no luck. Like there is input lag or something so it never registers quick enough. As for the horse, you don't have to get it on the first day, just dont forget to get it. When you leave your farm, go straight left. Walking into the field will trigger the cutscene. Yes you can leave chickens outside all the time as long as the weather isnt bad and as long as it's not winter. Just be careful in the summer and check the weather channel because typhoons can happen and it will take all your chickens.
Also I found out something terribly hilarious. If you hit your cow or sheep their love rating goes up. O.O wut. I played this game when I was 9 and 36 now wth lol.
It’s still there! When you place bets at a festival, just hit cancel instead of confirm and it still places the bet (for free). I tested in this version and it still exists here on the Switch.
Another don't: (SPOILERS AHEAD! I know the game is really old, but it is so old that a lot of the people playing now will likely be new to this game. Anyway...) There is an event in the game where the elderly grandma dies. I believe it happens during a festival day, but you walk by her in her rocking chair and she is not moving. When you go to talk to her, you discover her death and some scenes play and she is gone from the game. When you see this, DON'T talk to her and walk past. The next day the event flag is gone and and she will still be alive and stay that way for the rest of your game. Or if you are a monster and want to kill the old lady for 'feels' then do talk to her I guess.
It's not in a festival day, but the entirety of second year's Spring, avoid talking to her on the second Spring, when Summer starts she'll act like before and won't die anymore. Fun fact: She's Ellen, one of the first Harvest Moon's bachelorettes (Harvest Moon 64 is a direct sequel, you play as the grandson of SNES Harvest Moon's farmer)
Haha, if you know, you know! I didn’t want to spoil anything in this video for those who have never played the game. I was so shocked when I triggered THAT scene.
Stardew Valley is a clear spiritual successor to Harvest Moon and this version in particular and a phenomenal game, but... HM64 will always be my favorite. Time to Bet All my money at the tracks
@@elithegaymer im jumping between HM64 and stardew valley at the moment im getting pumped for haunted chocolatier whenever it decides to show itself 😅
Hey, I just remade the opening theme of this game into an orchestral version, I worked really hard on it and I would appreciate it if you could listen to it! 😊
Hitting your animals while they’re sick actually serves a purpose and for some reason gives them a massive friendship boost. I think it has something to do with overflow values
A couple tips I didn't see: DO optimize your Materiel *cough* Material gains by utilizing the mountaintop stumps BEFORE the earthquake event. There are three of them that replenish daily, and they're gone forever afterwards. DO wait for winter to bother clearing up the farm, related. You'll have a lot more energy without seeds to tend. DO feed your dog every day! You can put any forage in his bowl, including the Edible Herb. I'll admit I never checked stats, but I do think it helps raise his relationship more quickly. DON'T have a fence for your chickens? Put them on the roof. As long as the weather is nice, it will count as "outside", and you can quickly gather the eggs. They can weather a typhoon in your living room in a pinch! (I don't remember why I didn't get them to the henhouse, but this happened once...) DON'T walk into the cafe on day 1 and buy Cake. I still don't know how I did this but that was a hell of a ragequit. DON'T marry Maria. She's mine 😤 Thanks so much for a cool video on my first cozy game ever! Subscribed, I love your presentation ❤ did anyone else think Rick was a girl for a very long time? ...just me?
Thanks for leaving such a nice comment! Your tips are all quite good… I’ll make a note to not marry Maria, haha… Only problem is… she will end up marrying the mailman, haha.
@@elithegaymer Oh, Harris and I go way back. Poor man. I married her and he spent the rest of his days standing in the rain, staring into the void, cheerfully commenting that there's no mail on Sundays. I would quietly whisper "It's Wednesday, Harris" and go home to forget what I had seen. You're very welcome! I should mention, I haven't tried the tools hack, but you made me realize that instead of going straight to bed on a typhoon day, you can use your energy to level tools until you get tired--longer if you have some herbs. Thank you so much for adding mad strats to my '99 skill set!
No problem! Most modern farming games have moved away from this, but lots of the early farming games had this “feature” of having nine seeds in one bag! I still am extra careful every time I start a new farming game haha.
Honestly, HM64 is a game that is set up to be played multiple times, so don’t worry! For a farming sim, this game is very fast paced and has a lot of time limited events.
This cozy game does hold a special place in my heart from my childhood. But in terms of coming back and playing it again I wouldn't personally. Because of how rough it is in terms of gameplay. I'm now spoiled on how good we have it for options. Like in certain games you can adjust how fast or slow the day goes by. Or making it so we don't accidentally harm our farm animals 😅. Though rivals do make for an interesting part of the game, and it's too bad (to my knowledge) I don't see it very often if at all. Even so that doesn't mean HM 64 is not still playable now. What I would really like to see is a remaster of it with much needed upgrades that newer cozy games implement. But that's just me personally 🤷♀. As of right now I am content watching someone else do a playthrough of it that has a lot more patients than me 😆!

Great stuff, I loved harvest moon 64
I can’t leave my farm with my horse is it a normal thing ?
Yeah, you can't leave your farm with your horse; you can just ride it on the farm and during the horse festival.
@@YourFavoriteNoodles This really helps! Thanks a lot!
It's finicky, the more you play the more you get the hang of it. Gotta try the handheld and compare.
This is my first HM too!
It’s definitely a great one to start with!
Sleepy cow ❤. the 9 seed spread is good if you are aware of it. A great time saver. Thanks for the tips.
Yeah, I gotta let the sleepy cow get some air time every now and then, haha. Thanks for always watching and commenting so quickly!
Also I found out something terribly hilarious. If you hit your cow or sheep their love rating goes up. O.O wut. I played this game when I was 9 and 36 now wth lol.
The typhoons were ao stressful as a kid, and how your animals could die broke my heart 😭
As a kid? Typhoons still stress me out, hahaha.
There an awesome horse race glitch but I don’t remember it in detail and don’t know if it’ll work on the switch now.
Anyway...)
There is an event in the game where the elderly grandma dies.
I forgot about this event, noticed she was in a slightly different location in that yard and talked to her 😢
I like the choice of thumbnail lol. surprised you didn't go into That Scene of things to avoid 🤫
Haha, if you know, you know! I didn’t want to spoil anything in this video for those who have never played the game. I was so shocked when I triggered THAT scene.
It's a rite of passage!
Stardew Valley is a clear spiritual successor to Harvest Moon and this version in particular and a phenomenal game, but... HM64 will always be my favorite. Time to Bet All my money at the tracks
an update would be amazing
Right? There are several N64 games that I would even pay money for extra DLC for them. I would def buy new HM64 content in a heartbeat!
I played this as a kid when I wasn't able to play animal Crossing. I then got more attached to this game lmao I miss it
Hitting your animals while they’re sick actually serves a purpose and for some reason gives them a massive friendship boost. I think it has something to do with overflow values
The greatest game of all time
You have good taste!
A couple tips I didn't see:
DO optimize your Materiel *cough* Material gains by utilizing the mountaintop stumps BEFORE the earthquake event.
(I don't remember why I didn't get them to the henhouse, but this happened once...)
DON'T walk into the cafe on day 1 and buy Cake. I still don't know how I did this but that was a hell of a ragequit.
DON'T marry Maria. She's mine 😤
Thanks so much for a cool video on my first cozy game ever! Subscribed, I love your presentation ❤
did anyone else think Rick was a girl for a very long time?
Hello what emulator are you using?
… This is on the Nintendo Switch Online Service Plus Expansion Pack.
Water maybe free, but increasing your tolerance is more fun.
I was definitely wasting all my seeds on one plot. Dang it. lol thank you.
No problem! Most modern farming games have moved away from this, but lots of the early farming games had this “feature” of having nine seeds in one bag! I still am extra careful every time I start a new farming game haha.
Actually the horse can not be taken around town unfortunately. U can only ride the horse on your farm 😢
soo...start over for the third time. Got it. 😆
Honestly, HM64 is a game that is set up to be played multiple times, so don’t worry! For a farming sim, this game is very fast paced and has a lot of time limited events.
You are so wonderful :)
Haha, aw, thanks for taking the time to leave a such a nice comment!
🐮🐮🐮
Interesting list of complaints.
I've been waiting for this for so long🥹 This game was my childhood obsession. I really wish they would bring rival marriages back
