You set me at ease with your drawings and allow me to believe that I can do the same. I like the idea of using little scrap cards of paper so it's not overwhelming. Merry Christmas, and thank you for a lot of wonderful videos this year. Bless you.
I totally agree 👍🏾 Whenever I watch artists doing drawings and paintings that perfectly mirror reality, I mentally run screaming. So overwhelming. So out of reach🥺
These tiny sketches are great fun Toby - I must try them out. Happy Christmas to you,Tash and Betty and thank you for all your wonderfully entertaining and educational videos over the last 12 months. 🙏 Thanks Martin
I love how easy and accessible you make sketching. How you make the complex so simple. And your wonderful teaching style that encourages me to leap in and continue to learn and develop. Merry Christmas to you, Tash and Betty.
This is why if I buy a large sheet & have the store cut it, I make certain they give me all the scraps; I want all of it. 😊I usually end up with some perfectly sized bookmarks and a few 2x4[inch] sheets. You've shown a great way to use what some would call 'scraps'. Most excellent! Thank you, Merry Christmas to you too.
Thank you Toby, this film of yours speaks directly to me! I always struggle with larger pieces of paper and - for now at least - I am doing better with tiny scraps because I am simply unable to procrastinate over DETAIL. My little sketches, which are usually tinted with watercolours, no longer have room for much detail and at long last my sketches are starting to look like art rather than bad photographs! I’m writing this at quarter past midnight but will have another watch tomorrow with pen and small scraps of paper to hand. Happy Christmas Toby, to you and yours 🎄
Thanks, Toby! The perfect video to start the day. And precisely what I needed right now as I continue to struggle with the challenge of loosening up my drawing. I loosen up but keep finding myself getting sucked back in to being too tight and overly detailed. Anyway, a great reminder once again from you lighten up and llet go! Cheers and happy holidays.
Thank you for this brilliant video. On days when I really want to sketch but have no time or energy, I will do some simple sketches instead 😊. Thank you for the lovely little sketch of a Bakery Breakfast which you included with the painting I bought a couple of weeks ago. Very kind of you. Merry Christmas to you and all your family, and of course, Betty.
Toby, do you have a recommendation for a pen/nib for a beginner that would be economical (one with an internal well, of course)? Along with that, recommended ink brands?
Platinum preppy with a platinum ink converter- 0.2 or 0.3mm nib. Very solid pen, cost less than £10 and produces a good fine and controlled line for sketching
I’ve got a brand new free course, find it here - www.sketchloose.co.uk/become-an-artist-in-just-one-week - one week of sketching fun
I love how easily understandable your instructions are. You make things make so much sense to where it sticks! A very good teacher!
Thanks :D
Ansolutely delightful. Love your accessible approach and gentle instruction. Happy holidays, Toby.

IT's always a difficult balance to find! A cycle of loose vs tight is something we all probably go through :)
Great lesson
It was fun to sketch along with you. Thank you for sharing Toby!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Awe glad you appreciated that sketch!!!
Toby, muito obrigada 🌷🇧🇷
Thank you, Toby as usual, brilliant and inspiring
Glad you enjoyed it
Great idea. I love your videos.
Thanks so much!
Fabulous videos Toby. Please can I ask what fountain pen and nib are you using. Really nice pen. Xx
Merry Christmas mate!
Same to you!
I love my little lighthouse card that you popped into my purchase. Its stuck on the kitchen tiles with washi tape....
Awesome!! Glad it's got a happy home :)
Could you tell me about how you use your pen. It seems that the nib is sideways on? Is it a special pen, mine wouldn’t work like that?
Not a special pen, just using the nib upside down. All fountain pens work like that

I just wish you show a larger, maybe full screen, view of the photo you're painting.
Noted!
What pen is being used please?
