Just Go | Pro Cubers Talk About Their First Competition

  • I created this video for those who haven't competed before. When I went to my first competition I walked in shaking, stood in the back of the room all day and didn't talk to anyone until someone finally talked to me at the end of the day. There's nothing to be scared of at competitions and I hope this sheds some light on that.
Thanks to Schwan Park for this video idea!

Excellent video Chris!

7:18, it reminded me of a time when I met Drew at Worlds, and I asked him if he can sign my shirt, when he was done singing it, I asked him if the cube he was holding was a Boron Treated GTS2M, and he said “Yes. Do you want to try it?” And I wasn’t expecting him to ask him that question, so I said “Sure!” I tried it and I told him I was very impressed with the cube. I believe it was the 3rd or 4th day. And I have to say, Drew made my day

  • @cubethesquid3919
    @cubethesquid3919 6 ปีที่แล้ว

This video made me think of my first time! It wasn't that long ago, really, but I had no idea what to expect. Going in, I thought that the main purpose of the comp would be to just do well, and nobody really talked to anyone else. I was so nervous my first time. I have (mild) anxiety, and I was sweating so badly. I remember the first event was skewb, and I was fidgeting and tapping my foot constantly before my solve. Brandon Satterstrom was my judge first solve, and I didn't keep my hands on the timer long enough to start it. Thankfully, he was so nice, and because it was my first comp, he let me have another one. He judged another 2 of my skewb solves, and I ended up with a 15 second average. I started being more confident, and enjoying myself more. During my 3x3 round, Chris, you were one of my judges, and before my solve, I asked how to pronounce the name of your channel. I was so excited to meet you, and I couldn't believe that at my very first competition, I could meet someone "famous". For those first competing, just have fun. Don't be shy. There are people there who are just as cool as you are. If you're into math, there will be other people who like math. If you're into chess, or art, or yoyos, or My Little Pony, there will be someone else there who enjoy that same thing. I guarantee that if you put yourself out there, and try to meet new people, it won't be something you regret.

I've never been in a single competition but this just made me want to, but my country doesn't have that much comps, I'm on the WCA website like everyday waiting for some kind of competition just pop up so I can sign up and go and compete, to meet people, etc. Going to competition for the first time is something I've been dreaming of, I mean what's the point of just buying a bunch of different speed-cubes or puzzle just leave it at home without doing anything, no setting up, everyday starring on the computer, looking for method, tricks, tips, vlog, etc but they weren't meant for, so that's why going to competition is something that could show you, to let you know what Cubing of being cubers really means.

    Heres my first comp story.
My first comp was fun I was with my friend who wasn't competing my first event was 2x2
at this time I was pretty bad at and very nervous. In 2x2 i averaged around 15s and got a 20s solve but that doesn't matter comps are amazing mine was pretty nerve racking on 2x2 I got the same judge a few times in a row most of those times were Extra Scrambles (ES for short) because the person forgot to reset the timer the same thing happened on 3x3 getting an Extra Scramble isn't nice but on 3x3 i did pretty good I mained a gts 2m and got a 25s solve and a 34s solve with 27 - 28s solve between but i didn't care i ended up getting off the stage after my ao5 and laughing it off with my friend we then walked around the room and watched people building a tower we talked and tried out cubes, both of us got to meet feliks and he's nice. While waiting I was sitting with my mum and friend talking to other cubers sitting around us
heck someone looked like the cubing version of rambe
but in the end if you're nervous go
    the people are great
its a great opportunity to try new cubes and meet people
    comps are great

I recently went to my first comp and didn’t make the second round so I went home early and upset but two people talked to me, both of them I met in line at the area where they were selling cubes and I raced one of them he was about 10 seconds faster than me also later we were in the same 3x3 group and he let me try his Valk which felt pretty heavy and slow for me, the other one was way faster than me and taught me double flicks which I now use and he also told me I had better f2l and I let him try my Gans Air which I was gonna replace with another cube anyways. Both these people talking to me help me calm myself and get over nerves.

I wish I could go to competitions and I really want to....but I can't. There are very little competitions in Malaysia and they are all really far away. I missed the only one I could've gone to because I was going to Japan. I wish there were more competitions in my country because I really want to go to one I have not gone to one yet.

i like this video. Its not just a random video. it has a reason. not alot of people realize how hard it may be for some newcomers to take the step.

I recently got into cubing about half a month ago, and I've never solved a cube before. I know some algorithms and the easy notations. Christmas is in like 27 days and I'm begging for a cube. I have a friend who cubes and I'm planning to go to a competition with him.

I was very shy at my comp because I thought that people would judge me because I don’t know good methods and use beginners but it was really fun and I almost made it to the next round and managed to beat colorful pockets on pyraminx!
