I'm a fan of Gervais (not a huge fan) and I don't really get all this negative stuff (since nobody actually said anything specific), but whatever. Maybe another time. Basically, if you're going to talk sh-t about someone you really should explain what your issues with them are. I've been listening to Kindler for many years (remember Alex Bennett show here in San Francisco, Andy?) and he always seemed to me to be an angry, sad little man. He still does.
The thing is Gervais knows he winds people up...he lives for it.

Mixed feelings about Gervais. I used to be a big fan. His work with Stephen merchant on the Office, Extras, etc.. is still amazing and incredibly perceptive. Then he started drawing a bit too much inspiration from these ‘dark web figures’ for his stand-up, and seemed to be getting delusions of grandure, pointing fingers at everyone, strawmanning and misrepresenting people’s views or attacking people for not acting 100% rational everywhere all the time, and, sad to say, turned into a preachy old man in his latest work in my opinion. Might just be a bad phase though. He’s done more good than bad.

I would first reassure him that he should not feel the need to cater to me. Then I would gently slap him in the face, tell him that, contrary to his earlier work, his latest stand-up lacked true perceptiveness, and that the caricature he makes of people, being blind to the most commonsensical logic that he then proceeds to explain as if he's teaching nuclear physics, only exists in the loser domain of internet demagogues, where anonymous commenters with edgy fantasy aliases, like yours, like to roam, and kinda makes him look like a prick. I must have missed the part where Kindler 'explained' why he 'HATES' Ricky Gervais. All I heard was rambling and an observation that Gervais isn't a real standup comic (although his comedy specials, where he is standing for the most part, are significantly funnier than anything Kindler's ever done).
I gotta say that this is where brocialism and IDWism is about as equally tedious.
He isn't a stand up comic he is more a comidic performance artist but he doesn't really do "jokes" not a knock on him that is why he is successful he does something different. I feel like Gervais is at his best when he has a straight man to play off of like Karl. His "stand up" usually has a lot of him kinda reading both sides of a dialogue.

Certainly more consistent than Andy. I think Andy's funny too when he's not backbiting his betters (in this case, Gervais). Even when he attacks serial scumbag hacks like Bill Maher, Andy hates them for the wrong reasons (being anti-religious, mainly). I don't think there's anything brave or revolutionary about Ricky's comedy, but he's a damn sight more talented and accomplished than some jealous road comic.
Humor is really subjective. Personally, I find Gervais pretty damned funny.

That reminds me of a shitty video that Michael Brooks did a while back called “Why are some atheists such dicks?”, where he criticized fucking Richard Dawkins of all people, a guy who’s almost always calm and mild-mannered. If I recall, his (Michael) criticism about Dawkins and atheists like him is that they’re too mean and hostile in the way that they criticize religion. I mean, yeah, religion is toxic, stupid and, above everything else, *untrue*, but let’s make sure we’re being super polite when we critique it. 🤦♂️
I can honestly say that I don’t understand the people on this show at all. They attack far-right conservatives, many of whom get their shitty, backwards ideas from religion (I.e. being against abortion, being against gay rights, believing in creationism, etc.)... but then they also seem to have something against atheists who call out religion which, again, is WHERE many people get their idiotic beliefs from. I don’t know, man... I don’t get it. 🤷♂️
John Sykes When you look at how pervasive religion is, it’s fairly naive to say the left is anti-religion. Even among liberals, there are far more religious folks than openly atheist/ agnostic. I’m fine with that. It’s probably fair to say they are more for separation of church/ state and see the obvious implications involved in that boondoggle. Personally, I’m an agnostic atheist, but I get everyone cares and thinks about things to different levels. I’m happy to debate and defend my position, but also try to be realistic about where we are and would prefer everyone be free to figure this stuff out themselves. I totally am with you about how confusing it is to attack both sides, though. I guess the feel good about being smarter than both sides of the argument w two sides?

I feel sorry for Andy. He's one of those comedians who's worked for decades at honing his craft, and he can come up with some smart stuff, but he's just fundamentally not a funny guy. I think it pains his soul that a guy in his forties with no background in comedy can come along and not only create one of the most lauded sitcoms of all time, The Office, but also be regarded as one of the funniest people on earth. Poor guy.

I do not love Ricky Gervais more than life itself. I do love him a fuck of a lot more for obvious reasons than Andy Kindler.

To be honest I hate Ricky too, just the way he goes on about his atheism is just too much for me.
Now I don’t believe in god either but I don’t talk about it or shit talk religion the way he does, it actually annoys me the way he talks about topics like gods and aliens like he’s high and mighty.
He’s always insulting those who do believe in those things, calling Christians insane or stupid and even when it’s a hypothetical situation he always has to beat it into the person making the situation’s head that there is no evidence of this yet before they can even make it.
It’s almost like he’s trying to indoctrinate others into his point of view, something he seems to always lambast others for doing.
There’s also his argument against the paranormal or extraterrestrial, stating that there is no evidence of these events or things and that they shouldn’t be discussed, yet he seems to forget the notion of “just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.”
There was no evidence for bacteria or viruses in medieval times, it was from discovery that they managed to find out that these existed.
All in all I just don’t like Ricky Gervais because from personality and the way he speaks he feels and sounds like an arrogant prick of a man who can’t handle hearing someone else’s opinion.

I have done research after seeing him on this show. I looked up a bunch of his stand up. All terrible. Literally not one laugh. Most of the shows he just complains about the crowd not laughing at his jokes.
