- Annie Price was badly burnt in a caravan fire. She had life-saving operations on her face, but growing up her mum encouraged her to get on with her life rather than focusing on further plastic surgery. Now, aged 31 and about to get married, Annie is travelling to South Korea, where cosmetic surgery is so common people have double eyelid surgery and are back at work the next day. She wants to find out what some of the best plastic surgeons would recommend for her.

She was very pretty too... naturally. But I think plastic surgery is fine, as long as it doesn’t spiral into obsession. The main issue with korea is that the culture has made it into something so casual when it is in fact, surgery, and is also not a replacement for working on your soul.
Moriom Hasan When you are told that you’re ugly by your parents and other people you then see yourself as they do, calling someone ugly is soul destroying, ugly is the worst word you can ever label someone with and it should be abolished and yes if I had the money I would definitely change how I look and inner charm will always remain. People do their hair and makeup, cosmetic surgery is only making yourself look permanently better.
She also said that a lot of people with plastic surgery end up with the same faces...
I agree that plastic surgery can make people lose their individuality. I think the idea Is facial harmony, not to make you a clone of someone else. I have no problems with other people getting plastic surgery. As long as they don’t force me to fit their ideals. But the problem is that in Asian countries plastic surgery can be seen a necessity to have a head start in life. That’s when it gets problematic. I will never get plastic surgery but that’s because I’m lucky to live in a place that doesnt require you to have surgery in order to get a job, etc.. If I was in a Asian country, I know there is more pressure over there.

If I remember correctly her mother set fire to the room she was sleeping in to kill her, she was trying to eradicate the living proof that she cheated on her husband who like her was also white. Her grandmother saved her.

It might stem from peer pressure, as children they might hear comments about them being ugly or the term eww from other kids and also their families and not forgetting advertising the images of perceived perfect beauty not only on the face but the body too

I was told several times by korean tourists that I need to do a nose job and jawline, it was so random tho. I just went out to buy some groceries and that happened. But I just laugh and said I'm comfortable with my face, I won't change any single thing about it, I got skincare and makeup, and that's enough 😂🤣 I'm amazed how obsess they are with plastic surgery and their beauty standard was sometimes absurd. tbh there's nothing wrong with my nose shape and jawline, I looks perfectly fine like other people 🤣🤣

I think it’s similar to how the US is about teeth. I know a lot of people who think you should get braces (or now veneers) if your teeth aren’t perfect. There is almost a snobbery about it.

That is a risk of getting plastic surgery if you are insecure and do not like yourself.
Many people who do like themselves, who are not insecure and get plastic surgery to improve a few things usually are very pleased with the results.

For example, older women may want to get a procedure to stay looking young. The issue is you're always going to find a new area of yourself that you don't like, I just dont see a healthy way around it. Except for people similar to Annie's case, who might want to go back to how they looked before an accident, and people born with issues that effect their health, it's just an all around negative choice.

I believe it is possible to love yourself and like your own body and still see room for improvement.
Personally I have a slightly crooked jaw, square face shape and slightly recessed jaw.
I had braces in my teens so my teeth are aligned and I do not experience any practical problems.
I also don't think it is affecting my quality of life in a negative way, people in general are still nice to me and I haven't been bullied for it.
I'm 34 and I found out I could get my jaw made more symetrical and more correctly positioned when I was 24.
So for 10 years I have been saving money just in case I wanted it treated.
If I don't get it done I will not be miserable. But I think it will improve the way I see my own face.
I think it would be nice to look in the mirror and see a more symetrical face, and less square face shape will allow for more options with hair styles and glasses.

I have huge overbite, and not only do I think it would improve my jawline, but it might even alleviate my sleep apnea (which I should really get checked out lol). I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't consider having my jaw realigned if possible, so I will soften my stance a little.

One thing I became proud of with my Korean heritage and dating Korean American men was our strong jaws. Seeing koreans thinking of that as a bad feature just baffles me.

In a perfect world, they don't. There is no medical reason for an operation. But then again, we are humans, mean b1tches that judge each other instantly based on looks implicitly before we even get to know the person. Of course her personality shines trough when she speaks but not everybody gets to see that. Personally, I don't think they should, but I get why they would want to.
Ger Iarza I really disagree, standards of beauty are not inherently natural but shaped by socio-cultural factors like our upbringing. It’s the reason why white skin is preferred in some countries and darker skin in others. It also accounts for the different experiences Annie and the Korean girl with burns seem to have had. If we see more variety of looks in mainstream media, textbooks, etc eventually our standards will change (it already often happens when people migrate to a different country). In S Korea, media representations are particularly toxic, which coupled with a anti-individualistic mentality makes everyone wanna look the same.

@@suu1998 bet everything you know about plastic surgery is only all the horrible negative things you've heard from the media. I literally know people who have gotten plastic surgery. Very normal people who are definitely not miserable. It really isn't that deep.

When I saw the last girl's insecure feeling inspite being so beautiful I thank god for not being born in korea... I love k-dramas alot which fascinated me to visit south Korea but seeing their beauty standards I changed my mind bcoz I don't want to be bullied there for being brown or may be end up building inferiority complex
God is great yes! I love Korean dramas too. I fell in love with Korean actor Lee min ho lol. But for sure they’re a very vanity driven culture. I’ve seen what “fat” is considered over there and I’ve always wanted to go but I’d be a whale over there.... their beauty standards are very unique to their look and If you’re not fair looking and a size double 00 with the Asian look well I feel there’s really no chance of being considered attractive over there

@@jillthompson6110 well honestly if I really wanted to go I wouldn't be like "I'm not gonna go because they won't think I'm attractive" if I really wanted to go I would. I do agree we shouldn't be limited to do the things we want to do because of our looks but I do believe as a foreigner visiting South Korea you would be easily judged as I mentioned before they're a vanity-driven culture. They put a lot of their energy into looks. and true @F.D they probably wouldn't even care since I'm not even Korean, however, I've seen interviews where they look at black entertainers from here in the United States and say things like "She's pretty for a black girl" and to me, that implies that they don't only judge themselves but perhaps even see other races as less than. Not saying they're all like that I'm just saying they put a lot of emphasis into looks and the look they like is very particular.

I think there's no problem with getting plastic surgery if it's gonna boost your confidence, is safe, and you know the risks. But judging from this, the korean lady at the end didn't even know what she was getting herself in to.
@sad sushi You don't seem to be familiar with the korean jawline surgery. She's gonna look normal trust me. Many koreans get it and hardly anyone knows as the results usually look natural. This goes for other procedures too esp double eyelid surgery.
