  • Cat tries to engage with a deer, but the deer is afraid. I was out for a walk in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada) with Jelly the cat when we met a whitetail deer.. they were very intrigued by each other.

Cats would take the risk too because even if they lived from that experience, they would still like to go outdoors and just be more careful the next time if there is one. Always give them a cat door or always bring them out for a walk everyday on a harness. Feral/stray cat to fully indoor cat is torture to a lot of cats. If the cat is born indoors (not a stray or feral) and does not know how cars or what is poisonous, from their stray/feral mother cat, then maybe the cats should stay indoors and take them out on a walk on a harness sometimes.

      Humans risk their lives by going outside too. Stabbings, accidents, or shootings. Would you rather stay at home for the rest of your lives? Obviously not. Cats would take the risk too because even if they lived from that experience, they would still like to go outdoors and just be more careful the next time if there is one. Cats can learn just like humans can learn from past mistakes.

      I have a couple of times trained them to come when whistled. It's easy: whenever you put out the food bowl, whistle. After a while, they're not fussed with the food, and just come anyway (mind you, probably the scratch on head and stroking also counts!). Distance doesn't matter; all that's needed is that they hear you (handy for calling in at night).

    The "stomping" is a form of threat by the deer. Sometimes they will raise up and stomp with both front feet, just in case you don't take the hint. They will also "snort" to make a threatening noise. Note that the deer's ears are pointed at the cat, the nostrils are flared and the deer is using all his senses to evaluate this "thing". The tail is up. The deer is alarmed and ready. Aside from just a gesture, the deer's hooves are very sharp and can inflict a serious wound, probably even kill, a cat. The deer is alarmed but feels like he can handle this threat. But the deer's best defense is still to RUN, and usually that is what they will do if the cat pressed the issue.

    It’s funny how the deer knows that, despite its size, the cat is a predator and something to fear. I guess that’s what millions of years of being hunted and killed by felines will do to a species. And the cat’s relaxed attitude despite being in danger of being stomped suggests that it knows how the predator/prey relationship is supposed to work as well.

  • @tonyk501
    @tonyk501 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fascinating to see millions of years of evolution and genetics at work here.
    That domesticated cat instinctively knew or understood enough that the deer represented a prey animal, but was too big for it to take down safely.
    So it instead stalked and communicated its territorial boundary to the deer in a show of intimidation.
    As for the deer, it also instinctively came to the understanding fairly quickly that it was looking at a predatorial creature, albeit a small one, and communicated its defensive posture accordingly.

      Deer is actually trying to say that to the cat.
