Honestly a part that they fucked up on is that her boyfriend is a chef. A NY chef. He would be working three times as much as Andy. I'm a professional chef. We work like 70 hours a week. He wouldn't have time to miss her.
Absolutely. I was raised by a chef, I remember there being periods of time in high school where I would be lucky to see my Dad for more than 2 waking hours on his work days. Food service is hard work!
Yeah exactly what I was thinking. “Oh no my girlfriend works long hours wah wah wah also I’m a chef” 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨 they could’ve made him like a waiter or something.
Sumida Ryogoku She didn’t intend to apply there. She talked to someone in the human resource department of the publishing company, who, by the sound of it, was responsible for directing potential candidates to any number of different magazines. She probably hoped for an opening in a magazine about politics or stuff and was offered either some automobile magazine or runway. Not sure, if, in the real world, you would then be sent straight up for an interview, I admit, but I think, we can allow for some artistic leeway there 😉
Andy was sent by HR to Runway Magazine, they have a position open for an assistant (they deleted the HR scene). That’s why Emily made a sarcastic remark when she first met Andy; “Andrea Sachs? - Yes. Great. Human Resources certainly has an odd sense of humor.”
When her bf and friends started playing with her phone while Miranda is calling and she gets mad, everyone is like "Jeez, what a stuck-up". I was soooo pissed!! They sucked!
@@AmandaVieiraMamaesouCult Exactly. I never really was fond of friends, but while rewatching this film yesterday I was soooooo angry at all of them because now I'm working adult, and my friends are too. I literally meet them only once in two-three months, and everyone is okay with that. Because we just finished our education, we are early in our careers, we are working our asses off for good future. And Andy even has to work like this only for a year! I hate her friends and boyfriend so much
She did not refuse to eat the sandwich because of calorie concerns. She didn't eat the sandwich because she was so exhausted and frustrated by her job that she lost her appetite. 🤦🏻♀️
@@steflondon88 she said "im not even hungry anymore. that is why those girls are so skinny," meaning that the job is so exhausting that it causes you to lose your appetite and that's why the girls who work there are skinny
Also, just because it's a couple of minutes in the film doesn't mean he didn't spend HOURS putting her together. Seriously, who takes movies this literally??
Um Nigel had been styling her the entire time until she picked out something herself. He was still styling her up until Paris. As we can see by the end of the movie she went back to a similar version of her previous style when it was all left up to her. I'm gonna need yall to get this right before you make up an entire list of the movie and nearly get everything wrong. 🙄
Movie: At the interview for the small newpaper (after Runway) Andy looked like what Emily and Miranda would call knock offs versus the frumpy bargin bin style she had when first meeting Miranda.
The problem I always had was that her friends, as mentioned, were happy to take all the 'gifts' she gave them, but then bitched and complained because she actually started to take the job seriously. The boyfriend wasn't particularly supportive either. However, Nigel is right when he says she wasn't even remotely trying when she started, and was whining instead of committing to the job. She couldn't win.
How is it possible the girls could take the book to camp and not share it? Miranda would know about the extreme liability. The only way it could be remotley possible is Book 7 would be released the night the girls left.
@@cocokai9661 That may be too much conjecture. More likely, it was a plot device. Perhaps if his character had been more developed, we would have lost the plot.
You know the noise Damien makes when Cady snaps the crown at the Spring Fling? I made that same noise when I read that sentence. Surely it wasn’t real?
I know it’s a small detail, but I loved the part where - after weeks or months of barely eating anything for Fashion week - Emily just grabs the chocolate pudding and roll, stuffing her face while berating Andy saying Andy didn’t deserve designer clothes because “You eat CARBS, for Christ’s sake!!” 😂
I stopped watching after the first entry. They do explain why Miranda hired Andy. Andy’s little speech about her work ethic struck a chord with Miranda. Also, none of Emily’s previous hires had worked so Miranda was giving the “smart, fat girl” a chance. At the end of the movie, Miranda states that Andy reminds Miranda of herself. Have you actually watched the movie??
I think it’s strange the heroine’s seen as betraying her coworker by going to Paris when the former is hospitalized. Is she supposed to give up her job because a coworker’s hit by a car?
No, she was making the call to tell her she was not going to be the one going to Paris when Emily got hit by the car. Emily's accident was incidental as it happened after Miranda made the change, told Andy to tell Emily & she called her to tell her. Emily's accident changed nothing, she was already out.
@@heartwings2517 It is true, but actually what did Andy have to do? If she decline this offer she will obviously be fired, this is Miranda, she will not tolerate something like that. So I still don't understand why everyone talks about it as a betrayal. Miranda can't just go without her assistant, they exist for a reason
@@argentums8410 Emily was in the hospital, if Miranda had fired Andy then she would not have had anyone to assist her (w/ Paris coming up).....and as much as she had them do for her rapidly firing out to do lists, that would have been really tough. I am not so sure Miranda could have afforded to fire Andy w/ Emily out of action & such a poor track record of hiring new assistants for a job millions would kill for, but few could actually handle!
Answer to second question: Nigel is dressing her all along just like the first outfit. That's how she's getting all those gorgeous clothes. We learn that in Paris when he complements her outfit and says: "Did you put this together yourself?" And when she says yes. He says: "My work here is done."
At the end nate was all like ‘we have nothing in common anymore because you’re into fashion now’ , as if all he ever liked about her were her ugly sweaters
There's a deleted scene which you can find here on TH-cam. It explains why Andy so unprepared for the interview and didn't even know who Miranda was. The reason is because she was placed on runway through an agency that same day.
About the"instant Fashionista " Andy does Say when about to celebrate with nigel in Paris that the outfit she is wearing for her date is something she pulled for herself that means that all outfits she has used so far are hand piced for her by someone else i can only assume that Nigel is behind her clothes up to that point in the movie.
Unless she was stealing the clothes, Nigel was giving them all to her as her father made a point of saying her pay was terrible. Nigel was obviously giving her fashion advice as well & someone taught her how to do hair & make up. Those Chanel boots sold for like $3000-$4000 LOL! What I wonder is, given the size of their little apt, where did she keep all those clothes???
She was hired because Nigel said "who is that sad little person, are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Miranda wasn't going to hire her at all until that point - she shoos her out with "that's all", and then as Andi is leaving the building Emily comes for her - right after Nigel said his line. the point being that Fashion can and does change anything and anyone, it has a profound effect despite some people saying it's irrelevant and they're not that into fashion. That's why at the end of the movie when Andi has gone back to her former self, Miranda let's out the little smirk and chuckle as she is watching Andi walking down the street back as her former self. It's the entire base of the movie - the DEVIL wears Prada.
I agree, Nigel's comment may have moved Miranda to hire Andi as an interesting challenge. Miranda then became secretly fond of Andi and enjoyed watching her grow as a direct result of Fashion, Miranda's life passion. Miranda did say in that drive through Paris scene, just before Andi quit, that Andi reminded Miranda of herself. The end scene: Miranda sees Andi across the street, back in her element, definitely more stylish, confident and ready for the world than before the position with Runway. Miranda in the privacy of her car allowed herself for a moment to ponder that sight of Andi, lean back with satisfaction and smile with pleasure. In the end, Andi received that wonderfully "Miranda" endorsement "...she was a disappointment...and you'd be a fool not to hire her!". I love this movie!
Also: what irked me in this movie is when the girl just aassume Andy Is hooking up with that one dude when they don’t give her a chance to speak. She claims to know Andy, yet doesn’t let her give her side? Sheesh.
Thank you! Christian just kissed Andy on the cheek and Lily just lit into her like she just caught them making out. God, I wanted to slap her for that overreaction.
she went back to her style at the end but she deff looked better, this job truly updated her style all the way down to the hair. Hence why at the end Miranda smiled after seeing her fix her toupet while she was walking, it was a moment where Miranda realized her/the company’s impact on her
Miranda hired Andy because she's different from all the other girls. In a way, she saw the same ambition and will she has herself in Andy. And this proved to be true, because when Andy really worked hard, she was the best assistant Miranda had. She transformed herself and was able to go from super dull and lost to a stylish woman because she set this goal to herself. And this leads to the second point. It wasn't Nigel's help with the clothes, but what he said before that: Andy wasn't really trying. She was all the time fighting and sabotaging herself with her preconceptions about fashion and fashion magazines. It's when she sees that fashion is something more for some people, when she sees that it's a passion, an art, that she commits to be part of that world. She stops fighting.
I wanted to be a planner for years before I beame one. I grew up learning it from my dad. He was eventually proud of me. At first he said "Don't go into that." Years later, I asked him why and he said that he thought that with my quiet personality, I would never make it. My mum loved the story of Sally Thorson, who had been an underling. My dad had his typical expectation of a woman, that whe would barely be able to do it, and was later surprised when she became a Planning Director herself. She likely had learned some things from him. In Joy's generationof planners. I don't know the details, but when my dad was dying in the hospital, he spent months of daily conversations and convinced a young male nurse to go back to school and become (I think) a doctor. He did that throughour his life. Maybe Joy is like my Dad?
Tesla Kuhn Well they are asking you valid questions lol I’m sure Miranda had a private jet to leave Europe when she was finished. I doubt Andi stranded her LOL
Forcing me to read that was a waste of my time. I did watch the film. I know who the character is modeled after. So it's painfully obvious she had staff. One thing she did not have was a friend. By the end of the film, it was clear she saw Andy as one. Miranda's character even helped Andy in her career after Andy proved she lacks loyalty. The one thing that makes her different from Miranda. And instead of trying to foster that relationship, Andy simply waves at her like a chump after dumping on Miranda's invested time, resources, and personal confidence (as she had done her parents). Creating a woke reason to be a skag in Paris when she realized she was WORSE than Miranda. To now she had misjudged Miranda. Instead of changing her world view, possibly admitting she was wrong, she stuck the course of a narrow minded, petulant, and self important child. You can pretend I'm wrong, but the original point stands.
@Theodore Frazier Sometimes when you sign up for something you get more than you expected. Again. Miranda attached herself to Andy in the film. That was very clear. She even thought Andy cared about her. No one else did. Do I believe in sacrificing self indefinitely with no return. No. But Miranda addressed Andy as Andy and finally "us" in the film. That tells me she thought very highly of Andy. Even considered her a possible friend. Certainly a protege. Not some simple assistant.
Emily Blunt was amazing! One of the best book-to-screen character actors I have ever seen! I became a huge fan of hers after this film, and I’ll watch anything with her in it. She’s a true talent.
They explain why Andy was hired in the deleted scenes, she was not even expecting to go to an interview with Miranda, she was just sent there by hr without short notice, that is why she wasn't prepared.
Miranda explained in the interview why she hired Andy. She said it’s because she always hires the same type of girl and the usually don’t work out for long. She thought Andy would do a better job because she was different.
This reflects the real american life: ZERO real friends, nepotism, conflict of interests, veneers, the bank of mom and dad for all the kids with cool jobs and nice flats.
This comment reflects a real lack of knowledge in terms of how most actual Americans live. Most of us do not have any of the things you listed as typical for Americans. I think you’ve just bought into media stereotypes and made it your schema, which makes your reflection wholly inaccurate and unnecessarily condescending. This movie is just that: a movie. It’s entertainment, a business in which people with money and power produce things to bring them even more money and power. You watch it and take it with a grain of salt. If you’re looking for authenticity, rom-coms are probably not the best source. Seems like that should just be understood.
@ Majority? No, I don't. I think it's unwise to make such a generalization about all young people in America. You have no idea what the majority of people want. To assume that everyone is craving fame or whatever other trappings come with a Hollywood life is to buy into whatever stereotypes about Americans you have been fed. Again, unwise.
I think the reason Miranda hires Andy instead of any other girl who would “kill to have this job” is because she didn’t know anything about fashion. She was like a blank canvas and Miranda could teach her HER ways of doing things whereas hiring someone with fashion experience, their own view of how things should be in the fashion world may conflict with Miranda’s.. idk maybe I’m thinking too deep into it lmao
Imagine having unsupportive friends to your job and most of all, they know what spot she is in. I can't imagine having those friends. Now Nate, don't get me started on him.
@@ThomasJr Maybe not. Maybe thay didn't have any models of sucessful working women other than a few they could think of if they ever bothered, Thomas JR.
Nate was not right. Didn't think so then and especially don't now. I remember at the time being confused by so many facets of the film. Like the message it was trying to push was counterintuitive. I thought Andy discovered more about herself and what she could do while at Runway. And her transformation was a good thing. She took her work more seriously. She grew to respect the industry and the pressure involved. Whether that's fashion or any other field, that's a good lesson to learn and carry forward. And, it's always great to look your best. It gives you more confidence. More swagger. She worked at a place where she could dress spectacularly and not cost her much. Of course, she should take advantage of that. Oh, and her going to Paris instead of Emily? Why was Emily all of a sudden so, "you sold your soul for fashion"?!!! Bitch, what?!!! It's understandable that Emily is upset that she can't go to Paris, but she had to know that was going to be the case holed up in the hospital and of course, Andy would be the one to go in her stead. But, they try to sell it like this great moral dilemma. It was a script-manufactured conflict. Not actual conflict. LOVE this movie, but for reasons the filmmakers did not intend.
Just to point out another thing. The Harry Potter Manuscript doesn't need to come from a book... it's a file on a computer. My best friend and I actually read it 1.5 weeks before it was released. It was a Notepad file and it didn't take much to find it. Don't worry, I still bought the book when it came out to make up for that piracy action, but hey, I also couldn't wait XD
Having had a boss like this before, I came up with a plan to first call my friend in that business, who I would know by now. It might take a few more calls, but if everyone was at work that day, I am pretty sure I would have it, Kitsune Triana. On days like that, they were lucky to have me, as my brain thrives on excitement. It's the only way I can focus fo hours in a row on something.
I had a boss whose standards where so high that Senior Associates always asked for a transfer. I was the Associate that made coffee, ran errands, plus compiled the reports, even delivery of contracts and documents were given to me. My boss saw that I fixed everybody's reports and left at 8pm and I got in at 7am.That boss gave me that opportunity to assume Senior Associate responsibilities. He trained me for 3 years which was similar to bootcamp hell and wrote my recommendation letter to Stanford. Now all the Senior Associates report to me as I became the youngest partner in my firm. Hard work and a Tough boss who just wanted the highest quality consulting for the clients gave me a different perspective. Life? didn't have a life for 15 years. Life started when I quit before 40 to become an entrepreneur.
But your work can be your life. If I enjoy what I'm doing, I prefer to work 60+ hrs a week because I'm going to be awake anyway, may as well be making money!💃
Both my dad and Joy were like that, Chico Chuaquico. We didn't see much of my dad in those work years. It was likely the same for Joy's family. I had to leave and come back to say, "and for my family."
Andy didn’t learn how to dress up like a stylish guru. Nigel tells her what to wear every day. In Paris, he asks her “who dressed you up like that” and says he had taught her everything. It took months of her being told what to wear every morning to actually learn how to do it by herself.
How did Andy and Nate afford their NYC apartment. ..Answer NYC tenant and rent control and succession laws. This is the same way the series Friends explained how they afforded an even swankier apartment.
chipanndale 1 You've Got Mail also mentions this. Nate (bookshop clerk) mentions he has a 3 bedroom, no further details, while his coworker is forced to move to Brooklyn. Even parts of Brooklyn can be expensive.
@@MissEasyPeasySleasy rent control laws, dating back decades limit how much landlords can raise rent on existing tenants and made it almost impossible to evict people. The result is that people living in a place long term will not see any rent increase. Example if you moved into a rental in the 70's you would likely still be paying the same amount in rent today. You could move into a place, becoming a roommate to the original tenant, and then the original tenant moves out, as long it had been your official residence for more then six month's , and there was no clause in the lease agreement preventing roommates or sub-leasing then you became the beneficiary the rent control. This was the story line in friends. The original tenant was a Aunt who had lived there since the seventies, One of them moved in with the Aunt. Then the Aunt had moved out leaving her with a spacious rent control apartment in Manhattan.
When Andy's dad visited he gave her money so she would not get behind in her rent. Her parents could have been helping her out. Maybe his were too? I agree, considering what apts in NYC cost it is rather unusual they could afford it on just Nate's salary before Andy got her job, which her dad said did not pay her much.
If you had listened to what Andy's father told her, you would understand why Nate and her friends are not exactly supportive of her job and its consequences: Andy doesn't like Runway, is not interested in pursuing a career related to fashion, doesn't fit in the industry standards, must be available for ridiculous requests, the pay is terrible, the hours are insane and all she does is try to avoid being chewed out by Miranda for every little mistake she could make. It was only a year, but Andy became miserable very soon and it affected her relationships. Even her new boss noted that her choice to work at Runway didn't make any sense if she wanted to become a serious journalist.
The first question is actually answered in one of the arguments that Andy and Miranda had in the middle of the movie talking about how Andy was only hired because Miranda believed in her being an underdog.
The fact that Miranda hired her speaks to the fact she saw something different in Andy. She saw some potential in her being an outsider to the fashion world.
nigel styled andy throughout her entire time dressing the part besides at the very end, theres even a scene where he asks who picked out her outfit and she says she put it together herself and he says “my work here is done”
This is a weird video but just so happens I have watched this movie about 50 times . . just really like it . . and maybe because watching so it so much I have started to pick it apart . . for example why would anyone eat an onion bagel before a job interview . . lol and if you are an aspiring journalist seems you would research the company you are interviewing with and be on top of your game . .obviously I need to get a real life in 2020 considering I'm still awake and writing this comment . . lol
It's not just the few minutes with Nigel that clues her in to fashion. He continues guiding her, as implied by the scene in her Paris hotel room when he says, "Who put that together for you?... Well, my work here is done!" The entire premise that Andy was a hypocrite and selling herself out was debunked in an early restaurant scene, when the circle of friends toast "to jobs that pay the rent." There's no evidence that her transformation was anything but adapting to expectations, doing her job well as a stepping stone to her goals: (1) paying the rent, and (2) gaining respect to move on to what she really wanted. And despite all the dialog to the contrary, you can't convince me that Anne Hathaway was a larger size than Emily Blunt at any point during the production.
Miranda hired Andy because she had gone through so many "fashion girls" and they all failed. She hired Andy *because* she didn't care about fashion and might be different
She also mentioned she hired her because she was smart. I doubt many college graduates apply for a low paying job running menial errands like picking up coffee. Andy had to have an impressive academic resume as her father mentioned she had been accepted to law school- not an easy feat. Many fashionistas had failed so she took a chance on the "smart fat girl".
@@heartwings2517 I did a year of low paying internships specifically to break into planning. The first year I applied, I got a letter that I hadn't made the list. I called them and said "There must be some mistake. I have a degree in geography." I was serious. :)
Regarding the first scene, Miranda tells us she took a CHANCE on "the smart, fat girl." Perhaps she saw herself in Andy when she was young. Miranda even states this at the end of the movie when they're in Paris.
Joy mentioned Rick Counts who had been Plannig Director when she started (?). She said that when she first started, she had been intimidated to even talk to him, as she was in awe of his reputation. It was a different Joy that I met.
It’s not unrealistic. Nate is an asshole, and the movie does not noticed it, but someone selfishly trying to claim that his partner is not paying enough attention to them, suggesting she should drop her ambitions and the hard way to achieve it is not unrealistic
I can’t be the only one who got sad that emily starved herself and while in the hospital, hogged her food. People should stop framing beauty as being thin or wearing the skimpiest dresses.
Many professionals have a business phone and a personal phone and if you’ve ever worked for someone demanding and you finally have enough, well let’s just say chucking your phone into a fountain is easily understandable.
"Miranda who?" is moot. Andy wasn't interviewing for Runway specifically. She only found out which magazine she's going to be interviewed for once she was with Sherry (human resources staff).
Nope. I am from a 3rd world country, studied journalism and know who Ana Wintour is and where she works. There are just certain people you should know like Mark Zuckerburg and Bill Gates.
christian is a creep periodt!!! he took advantage of andy when shes the most vulnerable and i think that sucks more than how nate is dismissive and whiny.
Miranda isn't just a fashion icon. She has an in with anyone in the writing industry. Be it photography, writing/journalism, editors, modeling, etc. She's a force and it's shown when she states that she has a list of prominent people in the journalism and fashion industry who would walk if she left runway.
Tesla Kuhn RIGHT! Knowing the person who does the art for the book is a FANTASTIC connection, and it seemed totally reasonable that he would be able to get the manuscript with that connection. That was the point. To show how impressive he was. Barnes and freaking nobles would have nothing to do with that. It's not like he said he knew the owner of a bookstore or something insignificant.
Mo Branch when we delivered the book... we had to scan it. To prove it was delivered. Until then we only scanned very expensive items. They locked book overnight in safe.
The real question is, how did she get back to New York after she tossed her phone in the water. Was she gonna buy her own plane ticket for $2,000? No. She was gonna use her free ticket paid for by the magazine.. which means flying with Miranda... who she just ditched and left alone the remainder of her busy week. She was a terrible employee in that moment and shouldn't of used Miranda as a reference. Also who gets a job by saying "in the end I kindof screwed it up"? She has bad interview skills. Maybe the book explains all that better.
And I wonder which planning directors were inclined to keep going after they noticed me gone. Or hire me of the "reputation." Once the homebuilders got the list of the fax machines of all Arizoa planning departments and sent ehe a FAX specifically warning whatever random person picked up the document about me by name. Most books on finding employjment recommend against that. I once considered taking a job our of town and driving three hours each way so that I could still live with my family, but, I needed to live with them. After a while, especially with the sons.
There is a moment at the end of the ball scene where Andy has just helped Miranda remember the names of the guests. This part was not included in the film: Miranda quietly says thank you over her shoulder.
What I still to this day can’t understand is why Miranda was mad at Andy for her inability to book a flight during a hurricane... like I don’t understand, planes can’t fly during hurricanes! lmao.
Miranda was much moreso mad at herself than Andy- however, she can’t possibly admit this to herself because the reason she’s upset with herself is for putting her work above her kids/family. Yet if she didn’t do that, she couldn’t have ever become Miranda Priestly in the first place. This is revealed most of all in the scene where Andy is tasked to leave the Runway book at Miranda’s house, and ends up being seen by Miranda while she’s in the midst of an argument with her husband. I’d recommend you go watch that scene again (I’m sure it’s on YT) and listen to what the husband is saying - because he’s talking about the very night that Miranda was demanding Andy find a flight during a hurricane. And it’s noteworthy, to say the least, that Miranda and her husband get divorced very shortly afterwards.
Because people who have money are used to having people do whatever they ask and can be stupid. I used to work for a high-end interior design fabric company. I dealt with the showrooms, but sometimes, the designers would get us directly. I had one get me one time and wanted to know about getting a fabric overnighted from Europe. She could not grasp that it was late afternoon EST (US) meaning that it was late evening in Italy where the fabric was, so the company was closed and would not get the order until the next morning when my European counterpoint went to work. The designer also could not comprehend that coming from Europe, it had to go through customs and that they could hang onto the fabric for as long as they wanted to clear it and did not have to answer to me. Telling her that orders were 3-5 business days but sometimes showed up in two didn't make her happy. I had to repeat myself several times and finally ended up saying, "Italy is closed. No one is there to get the order. They are closed." I really don't know if she was the stupid one in this or if she had a rich client breathing down her neck being an ass. My guess is the latter.
I was up all night, as Jeff had an ear infection. I watched the "sorties" so I could figure out the date, but I was up all night. Jeff would scream unless I held him in a certain fixed position, fo rhours as it turned out. Joy called me at 7 in the morning and asked me to figure out the streetlights in Area B, and get back to me in half an hour. I did. I am not sure how?
I love this movie, but I was so happy and relieved at the end when Andy chucks it all and reverts to her original, genuine self, and gives Emily all of her Paris fashions.
@@isoldejaneholland8370 It's funny. We never said that about Joy, even though she was an excellent planner who promoted city policy a bit too much, but I am not sure that she had a choice. She would have had a lot more to lose than me by getting fired at that point. I was so upset when I had to resign from MAG. It was exactly the job I had dreamed about having in some place as my career goal. A lot can be done at the regional level by showing the best things some cities do, at the very least. Other cities will follow if it's to their political benefit, which depends both on their consituents and the relationships with the other cities. Tucson and Flagstaff have a lot of environmentalists and people who hate sprawl. In meetings I have held in those places, they were progressive. It's hard to fix the situation of 26 contiguous local juridictions, as the developers can easily play them off against one another, expecially driven by the competition for sales tax dollars. In Arizona these fund a substantial part of municipal governments.
Another question.. When Emily gets hit by a car & ends up in hospital all the trees are green & in bloom, it's obviously spring/summer. Yet at the same time Paris looks grey, wintery & covered with lights that makes you think it's getting ready for Christmas.
I do think the birthday thing is just lazy writing. I really cannot imagine an adult man (unless he had learning difficulties) being THAT salty about his girlfriend missing his birthday because of work. Just celebrate it on another night.
She has every rights to complain! She's being harassed, emotionally abused, never thanked for all the work she did... being a nationally known company isn't an excuse to treat people like dirt
Andy may have been a sell-out, but I have never seen a "chef" sitting around the house as much as Nate does - especially if he supposedly owns the restaurant.
@@onocoffee LOL I do not know any real chefs who work at a place that uses paper napkins. I totally agree, it was not realistic. He should have been a cook, not a chef. Better yet, he should have had some type of job that could justify being able to afford an apt like that in Manhattan when Andy did not even have a job.
I payed attention to all of the things you've mentioned in this commentary. I also pondered exactly HOW did Andy and Nigel have time to put all of those fabulous outfits together moreover, how was there time for that complete and total makeover? We're talking hair AND makeup and all before she returned to her desk which she was told by Emily that she must remain chained to. Never the less, one of my most favorite movies.😎
The problem with the 'blue jumper' monologue is that it only tells you how fashion works, it doesn't say why fashion works, or why we should care what colour blue is blue.
Viewers percieve the film through the lens of who Jung made them and their life experiences and values. Some of them will get it. Reading is like that too.
That would be the same about any professional office that had distinctive features. A government office often has metal desks. Our department had a huge air photo section where we would pull them out by hand and lay them on a table. I would imagine that is now not a feature of planning departments? Lots of maps on the walls is a big one.
I think the two first things ARE answered in the movie. Miranda, when doing the monologue "destroying" Andy about the flight she couldn't get, explains hiring Andy as a leap of risk in trying something new. If she is a legend, she always take risks. And about Andy's looks, a little line at the end gives us a hint that all her looks where put together by Nigel except the one she dresses to meet Christian (which is the one Nigel praises her for putting together alone. "My work here is done", he says.)
actually the total earlier indiference and self-reliance on Andy at the job interview and meeting Miranda is what make her to choose Andy - she somehow sees the whole potential inside Andy that she didn't knew either before, and all of her is a blank page so PERFECT FOR EXPERIMENTATION. Miranda took a chance for shaping-on Andy at her own self traits, and IT WORKED, she is totally right at the very end that Andy could have choose to left the work anytime BEFORE, but she CHOOSED to keep being there and stay, because after all, innerly SHE LIKED IT!! However when that moment on claiming victory over Andy, telling the whole true, was the breaking point when Andy on her new self improvements CHOOSED then to break-up and made her own way freely. Miranda was first quite shocked, but later on SHE IS HAPPY because not only she improved Andy's own self, but that actually she made a choice that she thought none could have ever done, as she, or Emily, didn't made it on time, while Andy did, and she was quite happy, because SOME HOPE in the world came to her. (Miranda actually was and is deeply broken innerly, but you could see that sometimes she wants someone could make her prove being wrong about something, and Andy DID IT. That makes something good for Miranda, though she keeps it hidden from everyone else to notice, as on her work she can't allow herself being softer, but she is actually very glad about that happening!1)
"Things Everyone Ignores In The Devil Wears Prada"....everyone? really? I think we all watched the movie with comprehension. This is like a rant on the movie because it irked the creator of this video. Regarding the Jarlsberg...that price is accurate because the price of food in Manhattan is way higher due to high rents. inserting footage of a 20lb wheel of Jarlsberg is misleading to your viewers. Which is odd because you addressed a high rent, so that obviously effects the price of food too! I swear this content creator has such skewed logic. Irked me getting through this.
New York is a city of extremes, Dakota DellFera. Jarlsburg chump change to some. There were still abandoned buildings with squatters in Alphabet City during this period, I think. I read that all the financially normal people who lived in Manhattan have moved to Brooklyn. An interesting theme is homeless people in New York as what happen when they closed Bellvue seems landmark. There were suddenly more homeless people, and you could notice the crazy people on the street. I would not be surprised to find that there were no homeless people in New York today and wonder where they went.
Nate more so got irritated with her, because Andy would still try to down the job while becoming the people she claimed to hate so much. When he said “I wouldn’t care if you were out pole dancing every night, just do it with some integrity” he didn’t care what she was doing, but wanted her to stop whining to him about how terrible the job was all while becoming an awful human.
Honestly a part that they fucked up on is that her boyfriend is a chef. A NY chef. He would be working three times as much as Andy. I'm a professional chef. We work like 70 hours a week. He wouldn't have time to miss her.

The real mystery to me : why would an aspiring journalist NEVER do any research to a company that she intents to apply ?
Sumida Ryogoku
She didn’t intend to apply there. She talked to someone in the human resource department of the publishing company, who, by the sound of it, was responsible for directing potential candidates to any number of different magazines. She probably hoped for an opening in a magazine about politics or stuff and was offered either some automobile magazine or runway. Not sure, if, in the real world, you would then be sent straight up for an interview, I admit, but I think, we can allow for some artistic leeway there 😉
Cause she ran out of options and needed a job ASAP.... sigh.... she even says so herself.... you you people ever actually pay attention?
Andy was sent by HR to Runway Magazine, they have a position open for an assistant (they deleted the HR scene). That’s why Emily made a sarcastic remark when she first met Andy; “Andrea Sachs? - Yes. Great. Human Resources certainly has an odd sense of humor.”
In the book she actually researched Miranda quite a bit.

Shirley Gonzalez they said that at the end
He was, there are a lot of mistakes in this video
Yeah, in Paris he said "who put that together for you?", which implies someone's been dressing her the whole time.
Also, just because it's a couple of minutes in the film doesn't mean he didn't spend HOURS putting her together. Seriously, who takes movies this literally??
Yes, he also said at the end of the movie that his work is done. So he was dressing her all the time.
I think she went into a hybrid version, of a more stylish version of her older taste...
@@contr4dixion Agreed. Her look was tastefully updated.
Movie: At the interview for the small newpaper (after Runway) Andy looked like what Emily and Miranda would call knock offs versus the frumpy bargin bin style she had when first meeting Miranda.
For the record, Nigel was tossing Andy's corn chowder because Andy was late for preview.
In the third act Andy didn't need Nigel anymore.

Some people need more than fuzzy logic, HelTra91.
Stoped watching because LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE WAS EXPLAINED BY THE MOVIE!!!!

Her unsupportive boyfriend and friends would’ve gotten dropped super quick!!
She had no time for that crap, Jay Caanodii.
Answer to second question: Nigel is dressing her all along just like the first outfit. That's how she's getting all those gorgeous clothes. We learn that in Paris when he complements her outfit and says: "Did you put this together yourself?" And when she says yes. He says: "My work here is done."

There's a deleted scene which you can find here on TH-cam. It explains why Andy so unprepared for the interview and didn't even know who Miranda was. The reason is because she was placed on runway through an agency that same day.

@@slappy8941 You paying for my english lessons would not either.
Interesting perspective. When I think about it, this could be it :-)
I (probably) liked this comment more than the whole video.
Nah
this was beautiful thank u

Caroline Araujo you are right! The thing is that when she stopped fighting she started losing part of herself. That’s why she had to quit in the end.
I agree Caroline! But I think Andi, doesn't stop fighting, she just fights in another way and comes out a winner in both worlds.
Andy pretends in the end she's not like Miranda, but leaving her stranded and tossing her phone proves she is exactly like Miranda in every way.
Because she was Miranda's assistant? Lol

Damn, you have a sad life and you're projecting onto others. OR as someone mentioned, you're assuming most Americans live like the people on TV.

I think the reason Miranda hires Andy instead of any other girl who would “kill to have this job” is because she didn’t know anything about fashion.

Even parts of Brooklyn can be expensive.
chipanndale 1 I don’t know what that means, can you elaborate in how those laws help them afford their living space? Thanks in advance for your time!
@@CJ-im2uu In 1998, Brooklyn was affordable. Prices skyrocketed ten years later because people couldn't afford Manhattan.
Wasn't Nate a chef/cook? Cooks work LONG hours. How can be possibly be mad at Andy for working late when he should be at work til 2am?!
She got a better education here than she would have at some minor journalism job. She learned a new world, rdpcl.
Miranda probably goes through so many assistants and fires them when they can’t do the impossible yet Andy does the impossible regularly
My sister went through a lot of assistants except for Effie, Pablo Tejeda.
Regarding not knowing Miranda, Andy was applying for a different job in the building (deleted scene)

"Everyone gets born, Nate, get over it!" Best thing I've ever heard about that scene
I never thought their apartment was all that spacious to begin with.
That apartment is sweet for NYC!!!
It's not just the few minutes with Nigel that clues her in to fashion. He continues guiding her, as implied by the scene in her Paris hotel room when he says, "Who put that together for you?... Well, my work here is done!"
The entire premise that Andy was a hypocrite and selling herself out was debunked in an early restaurant scene, when the circle of friends toast "to jobs that pay the rent." There's no evidence that her transformation was anything but adapting to expectations, doing her job well as a stepping stone to her goals: (1) paying the rent, and (2) gaining respect to move on to what she really wanted.
It was a different Joy that I met.
that grilled cheese was most certainly NOT burnt
Nate says later that its not about his birthday, that he isnt a child anymore and goes on explaining what his problem is ..
Yes, lots of romantic movies have these totally unrealistic situations. Like Nate can’t give her the job for a year. Selfish
It’s not unrealistic. Nate is an asshole, and the movie does not noticed it, but someone selfishly trying to claim that his partner is not paying enough attention to them, suggesting she should drop her ambitions and the hard way to achieve it is not unrealistic
4:19 if the roles were switched everybody would be up in arms about Nate forgetting Andy's birthday. FACTS!!!
I can’t be the only one who got sad that emily starved herself and while in the hospital, hogged her food.
People should stop framing beauty as being thin or wearing the skimpiest dresses.
IT'S A MOVIE
@@howstunningly its literally about toxic beauty standards 💀
It just shows she hasn’t found the right person for her 🤷🏻♀️ she needs someone to support her but keep her leveled
Miranda isn't just a fashion icon. She has an in with anyone in the writing industry. Be it photography, writing/journalism, editors, modeling, etc. She's a force and it's shown when she states that she has a list of prominent people in the journalism and fashion industry who would walk if she left runway.
The printed copy of the book was heavily guarded. The script before printing could have been copied by an employee
This portion of the video really bothered. Such a stupid "observation".
I hate how her boyfriend was though. Rest of the movie was cool.
Miranda depended on Emily for her new assistants and they failed so Miranda takes a chance on Andrea.
"Maybe we're being a little nitpicky here ....". You think?
Miranda explains in the film why she hired Andy. "I thought to myself, take a chance, hire the smart fat girl" 😂👠
Maybe that made Emily think. Or maybe not, Isolde Jane Holland.
@@coreycox2345 I love Emily's comment to the new girl, "You have some very big shoes to fill."
I think it was more the final straw type of moment.
This is still my favorite movie!!
"The shining beacon of hope" speech is important. People in the same business tend to worship their own product! 🙉
This video actually took all the fun out of “DWP.”
She has every rights to complain! She's being harassed, emotionally abused, never thanked for all the work she did... being a nationally known company isn't an excuse to treat people like dirt
If she did, the response might be "No one can hear your screams" regardless,
When Andy threw her phone and left Miranda without courtesy, that sealed the deal. Miranda won. She successfully turned Andy into her clone.
😅🤡🤡
@@simp2234 Moahahaha.
"Everyone gets born, Nate. Get over it"
THAT WAS SAVAGE LOL
Andy may have been a sell-out, but I have never seen a "chef" sitting around the house as much as Nate does - especially if he supposedly owns the restaurant.
He does not own it, he said he was a sous chef there. It was referred to as the "dump Nate works in".
@@heartwings2517 Sous? How many sous do you know who hang out at home at nights...
@@heartwings2517 Amen to that!
@@heartwings2517 I disagree. Better to keep these distractions out of the main story if they don't fit what you are getting at.
"get over it!" ? Imagine the bf saying this! Lol
I wish i was a size 6. Im a size 17. Used to be size 20 so on my way to more weight loss and healthier me

@@juliafanrose3572 That's fantastic!
Nothing is ignored in this film, true fashion aficionados would notice every minute detail in this iconic movie
That would be the same about any professional office that had distinctive features. A government office often has metal desks. Our department had a huge air photo section where we would pull them out by hand and lay them on a table. I would imagine that is now not a feature of planning departments? Lots of maps on the walls is a big one.
She literally explains why she hired her in the film
I think I had better watch this film, Quinn Tries Staying Alive.
Okay guys this was just a movie we're just supposed to sit back and enjoy it maybe it wasn't written to give out a big message
"maybe we're being nitpicky here" YA THINK
