Ms. Streep could not be more charming and lovely than she is here.
The best actress of many generations.
They have great chemistry and great fun! Letterman is definitely very charmed by her and she seems to be a natural flirt, so relaxed, open and sweet towards him.
Meryl probably didn’t want to do the show. I get that. I didn’t want to watch this video. But she did the show. I watched this video. And we are all better people for this.
tee hee hee. :)
One of the finest actresses of all time.
I worked with her once.. she was very pregnant and for the first time I understood the term “radiant” about a pregnant woman.
Heartburn?
@@thebigl156 No… maybe a slight case of indigestion…
I think they mean the movie Heartburn
@@alexandriahenderson1141 I know… 😁
She's always radiant though, pregnant or not.
Man, I've been in love with her since The Deerhunter.
Meryl Streep is still such a beautiful actress!
"Wouldn't that be something, though?"
LOL
You could see his imagination running with the idea.
She is a natural beauty.. Beautiful skin beautiful bone structure.
That's all superficial, and something she had no control over, yet something society values most.
Her real beauty is the equanimity she radiates, despite her talent and fame! Most people in that position lose perspective.
She embodies femininity and motherhood. She has a special humanity, tenderness and brightness. I guess that's what makes her the unique actress she is.
Of course, as everybody else she is not 'perfect' , but she has indeed a unique warm brightness, so that she never seems to be "playing" her roles, it feels as if she just lets her humanity give them life, so that the wooden Pinocchio becomes a flesh and blood child, every time..
I'm so surprised nobody ever gave her in any movie or play the role of Mary.
Or even of Maria Maddalena.
I'd love to see her in one of the two. She's a great, as Fabrizio De Andrè in music is (for any italian): blessed people with a sharp brain and even bigger heart, who give gifts for life to us, with their Art❤⁰
I believe you've captured the essence of what makes her such a great actress - the depth of humanity within her spirit. Well said!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I personally think she's perfect actually.
3 time Academy Award winner such a beautiful woman...
Dave is actually a little star struck here, imo.
Streep is an acting savant
I was going to say, it seemed like they were a bit flirty..
She had magnetic beauty. He was smitten as any hetero would be. notice how close he is? Unusual for dave.
One sympathizes. :)
@@WintersWarUnusual?😂
Dave's best interviews were always with quests who was incapable of being upstaged and nobody can upstage Meryl.
Funny, I was just talking to my sister the other day about how stunning Meryl's face is... even now!
She's luminous! I can't believe -- I can't remember the name of that director who complained that she was ugly -- anyone would think otherwise. Dave has good taste :D
Heck, let's just cut to the chase: She's damn hot! 🥰😍
@@Jim_L agreed 100%!
@@indranidasgupta8982 It was Dino DeLaurentis when she auditioned for King Kong.
@@GjpgrDthat’s right!! Thank you 😊
Streep's reluctance to come on the show may have been caused by a sketch on Letterman. There was a sketch on new books in the 80s. One of the books was about adjectives you can use to describe Meryl Streep. It was followed up by a remark from Letterman about how Meryl Streep was less than a conventional beauty or words to that effect. It's theoretically possible this sketch could have rubbed Streep the wrong way.
I don't think Meryl has been on many talk shows, she seems like a shy private person, nothing personal against Dave
Meryl Streep is great
Possibly, but Meryl never did Carson, Leno or Arsenio Hall either. She also never did a Phil Donahue interview or Barbara Walters and her first Oprah appearance was promoting Marvin’s Room, which she did with Robert De Niro in 1997, so I think it was more that it was just considered forbidden in those days for film actors to appear on television which didn’t change until the late 90s.
It wasn't the 1st or last time that Letterman has offended someone in show business. He had a reputation back then for being an 'A-hole' to his guests. Cher once called him an 'A-hole' right to his face when she came on his show.
@@filmneye She did not call Dave an A-hole. She said on her first appearance that she her reservation for coming on the show was because she thought he could be an A-hole if he didn't like the guest...which was true, but Cher went on to do many more appearances on the show, including a reunion with Sonny, and the two had a great professional relationship.
Meryl was radiantly beautiful back then, in '99. I remember seeing an early movie of hers in the late 70's and being struck by her luminous face.
That's why she's not "just" à gréât actress but also a star!...she shines.
@@christophepena2212 You don't have to be radiantly beautiful to become a female movie star. Examples: Bette Davis, Angelina Jolie, Katharine Hepburn, Sandra Bullock, Jodie Foster, etc.
Meryl Streep is both patrician and striking.
Really like Meryl in the underrated Falling In Love with Robert Deniro.
Is that the one where they get a book mix up on the train back to the suburbs it was a remake of a David Lean film
I love her. Dave is right her face is bright.
She is 50 here! 😮She is so beautiful.😋Wife goals.
A laugh like hers is SO rewarding, it is no wonder a comic like Dave would love her, just like the rest of us.
speak for yourself bu tt wipe
So true!
I just realized when she was talking about her 8-year-old going as a pink lady from Grease, that must be her daughter, Louisa Jacobson, from the Gilded Age.
Am watching that, too, to see if Louisa can keep up. 😂
My favorite living actor.👌👌
the production she's referring to at 6min in is The Frogs - Sigourney Weaver and Christopher Durang were in it with her...
love her
Yep, she's stunning.
Absolutely 💯
This was the same show that Letterman found Harmony Korine rifling thru Meryl's purse, threw him out of the Ed Sullivan Theater, and banned him from the show for life.
Unless Dave changed his tie mid-show from solid green to green with white polka dots, I'm afraid you're mistaken. Two entirely different shows. Go find the show that's Korine's last appearance on Letterman, you'll see what I mean.
@@rh5466After he was caught rummaging through Meryl’s purse, Harmony was kicked out before he was to guest. He was never on this show.
@CaptainOT is correct.
His last appearance was in April the year before. I understand there’s a compilation of all of his appearances on another channel that also includes discussion of the incident.
What???
@@Margerysharp Korine's an ass and he makes bad films.
Now this is gold. She really had nothing to worry about from Dave, as he could appreciate the truly great guests he had on, with an actual sense of humor about themselves and not just some self-absorbed knobs. Funny stuff.
Larry David used that joke about older kids trick or treating without a costume on Curb.
6:20 Based on Aristophone's play, "The Frogs" [written 2400 years ago] , yeah, you know it?
Sure! American high school students don't know the difference between grease and Greece, but sure, we know Aristophones.
Says Dave: "I can't tell you how nice it is to sit this close to your face..." So weird. What a thing to say to anybody, let alone Meryl Streep.
who . it's been 24 years .... and I still miss Dave
my ultimate face actress La Streep!
She was really beautiful. The best at this time imho.
Classic TV Interview 😅
David Michael Letterman (12 de abril de 1947) es un presentador, comediante, escritor y productor de televisión estadounidense.
76 años.
Lovely, ain't she?! ❤❤❤❤❤💓💗
The chorus from The Frogs is an old, famous Yale football cheer.
Where can i see the other interviews of her by Letterman?
✅️ Alive
⬜️ Dead
Why don't we get to see the previews?
Jay Leno would take strange children for rides. To Neverland Ranch to see his buddy!
`best ACTOR
@ 1:19; okay, I, just love this woman!
Yeah well bad move at the end when he asks her what she's doing afterwards and she replies "am free", he doesn't follow through with it and wishes her a safe ride home.
Either he got it straightened up afterwards or he just passed by dinner with her and having in depth conversations :/
Thank you for posting this. Meryl made five Letterman appearances, I think, and all but one has been removed from TH-cam.
Yes, the best ones have been removed 🥲
W H Y ❓️
@@user-yn7yo1co3k I think copyright infringement.
Why is that?
I remember the one where she came on in a gold dress I think, and she wasn’t feeling well, and she said “well I didn’t wanna cancel” it was amazing show.
Letterman, one of the best, ever, and Streep, one of the best ever!
Music of the Heart was a lovely movie.
She looks nervous.
What's the deal with the crowd applauding after each of her answers, or an exchange?
Is this Arsenio?
US audiences have become this way in recent years. They do that, for example, to acknowledge a clever remark or witty joke. Maybe they do it because they feel that it seems rude to do nothing in such situations.
It’s an American thing. It’s annoying as hell
Miss the Late Show……
Gotta admit, everytime I see a post on here I assume the person died. So when I saw Streep I had a panic attack. But nope, still kicking. Apparently recently made public she is no longer married so maybe this is a lowkey audition from Dave? :D
Every time he opens his mouth it's like an open flame you don't want to touch or get near. Talk about awkward, he is the most awkward producing person I have ever seen and the very, very last person you would ever want to talk with or be interviewed by. WOW, the fact that no body ever saw that in him is unbelievable.
this is delightful
The G.O.A.T ❤
Wrong, she is amongst the title, 'best actress of her generation"..
That’s why we live in Connecticut
A few of my questions just got answered... >.>
respect that
This is rhe day David Letterman kicked Harmony Korine's ass out of the building.
I like Meryl Streep - such a cute person
Oh well, so much for that clip.....
Of her generation? In history!
Dave, the altruistic gentlemen.
She good, just checked
Like you mean good face still ?
@@MrPomelo555alive.
Dave was very sweet here, and yes, Meryl does have a beautiful expressive face. He does seem to make people nervous though, she seemed a little bit nervous here.
7:12 "You can't beat those Ivy League educations can ya?" It's time Ivy Leagues get a little bit nervous and introspect, I guess.
So beautiful! She is the best ❤love youuuuuu
I wonder what Natalie Merchant sang? Will have to search that one out...
Meryl are u naturally wired to think for god like name games i seem to be so lately found my penchance for spiritual feelings❤❤🎉🎉
Sublime.
That was a darling thing she did, sitting in the wrong seat.
What could one hope to find in Meryl’s purse, anyway?
She’s not dead, just separating from her husband
Wow! They were marry for a long time like 40 yrs or so?
@@muffin47gal1245 years, actually
Separated for a while now. The news of it is recent.
Why not show the clip😊
'rights'
@@tommyriam8320 Yeah. Creators do own their creations.
Long time David Letterman fan here, but he really blew this interview, SO many cringe moments, and they just kept coming. Meryl did great putting up with the ridiculous questions.
Nice Dave is nice, but not exactly the anti-establishment iconoclast he used to be.
We missed you Dave 😢
Talking about pumpkin, candy, Halloween...Geez, give me the old talk show hosts...and I like Dave, BUT....Geez....
Hot take: she was hiding in plain sight and they actually DID have an affair.
Dave left the show in 2015.He is still around doing something but not on TV.
Wasn’t Dave the party planner for Obama’s one true birthday? Merly wouldn’t attend that, of course-the party was the only thing that mattered for me in that time
Did anyone check? Is Meryl Streep dead?
She’s beautiful!….So is David!😂
Meryl wasn't pretty enough for king kong 😂😂😂😂
I’ve always heard how she was a horrible person and difficult to be near. Great interview! Miss seeing Dave every night.
Well obviously not true as there's countless stories of quite the opposite, there must be more context that's missing or people took things she said the wrong way.
freak!😂
Letterman always talked too much. Compare this to Carson with a similar guest.
I think in this case he's trying to balance up for her shyness and reserve.
Dave is sweet for women named Meryl/Merrill.
Greatest actress of a generation?????😊😊😊😊😊😊 Hardly. The greatest over rated actress of a generation perhaps.
What was that about the Donald Trump kinda deal?!?! LOL
Not sure, but maybe he had a reputation in that era for throwing lavish parties.
@@allendracabal0819oh true… yes that makes sense!
A Donald Trump kind of deal?? DEAR GOD SAY IT WASN'T SO!
I like Meryl Streep. For a woman who looks like Wayne Gretzky, she's okay.
The Great Ones often look alike.
:)
I find Letterman repelling
Letterman was a bully
Harvey Weinstein’s biggest fan.
I know she's a great actress and everything, but I always find her quite odd in interviews, odd mannerisms and things. In fact, I think she's got odder with age. I wonder whether its just some cultural thing and I don't quite get it because I'm British.
She's just shy and probably uncomfortable, I think it's really cute, I like it.
She's highly intelligent, thinks about her words before saying them, and she is very modest. She's brilliant at improv! Very witty.
I've loved her since seeing Kramer VS. Kramer. ❤
