Hi carl, what an amazing collection and your videos are very informative. Just a quick queestion, i am from Philippines, somewhere in city area and i have a new Red Emperor JM, do you think this will survive in a direct sunlight? Given that we are in a tropical climate. Sun is very intense.
Hi and I’m sorry to say no I would give your tree some shade. That cultivar in Europe or North America would be fine so will be listed as sun tolerant, but basically Acers live in the shade of other trees in Japan so need some shade. 👍
Realy nice to shair your knowledge. I started yet. A south facing garden. What i did is putting steel cables over a part of the garden and grow grapes over it. They create a complete different klimate for me and the acers that do not keep up with full sun. And yeq experiment on those hot days. Be quick to adjust. I had butterfly in full sun for an hour and the new tips got black. Bihoo next to it did just fine. They show it quick when they cant take it. Keep new plants in shade. Putvthem in sun when you are in free time and check them every hour can learn you a lot and prevent big damage.

So glad I found this channel, it’s re sparked my love for the Japanese Acer! I did see your video about ‘taylor’ being finicky to do well, mine was doing quite well as a younger tree until one day of decent sun here in the south west gave it leaf burn right away haha! Moved into a spot that gets maybe an hour or two of sun in the morning and then full shade and it’s loving it!
I just bought 11 more Maples to add to my in progress garden. I really like those signs you have. Did you make them? or where can you buy them? I'm in the US. All your trees look so good.👍
Lots of great tips Carl! Looks like you got some unusual new species there. I have just got a 'Black Lace' from the nursery which I've not seen before. It says its part shade, so I'm going to follow your advice and try to acclimatize it
Brilliant again Carl . your advice and tips have helped me keep my 26 Japanese acers looking great. Heard you mention about staking some of yours, are there any important rules or recommendations regarding staking ? I will have to check your videos in case you have already covered that issue. Thanks great work.
Thanks Robert, to be honest I just have a stake close to the trunk to offer support if needed. I find potting on slowly helps as I roots fill the pot adding stability. Staking up the leader on the Red Willow just gives it more height until the trunk hardens off. I’ll see if I can include something in a video soon 👍
Going thru heatwaves over here. Got all mine in shade plus 2 layers bug netting and seems be doing great during my busy work schedule and during the mid 90"s in the state of Kentucky usa. Water once a day..in the evening everyday. If it's going to be this hot this summer I may end up placing a drip Tray underneath all my maples. Most are expensive bonsai I've created over past 10yrs. Have them all together.
I am in US, Colorado. 5200 ft 10’’ moisture/ yr. 250 d of full sun 90-100 degrees summer -15-20 F in winter. Your sun is very different than anywhere else
Hi thanks for all your great videos, very useful keep up the good work, I live in Hastings South East England, it's now the beginning of August is it too late to defoliate Japanese maples now or what would you you say was the latest time to in the year to safely fully defoliate?
How many japanese maples do you have in your collection now?? I'm looking for 2 of them....acer palmatums Mila and Katja so if you come across either or both can you let me know please? Love your channel by the way, Carl!!!!
@@Japanesemaples In sheltered areas they can survive when planted in the ground and have become established but in small containers it’s a battle! My maple tree leaf is turning red and shedding leaves. It feels like the tree is dying in July in Michigan. Any tips to revive the tree? Tree has been watered every 3 days. Its not about the water fir sure.
I prefer clay as they evaporate water, cooling the trees roots in the summer. In the spring they help get rid of excess water. The nursery plastic pots work with the very free draining compost they use, but I prefer something more substantial so clay works. Thx for posting 👍
Great video, thanks! What are your thoughts on compost? I have been trying different types but find some ericaceous is very fibrous, almost stringy and drains straight away! John Innis 2&3 mixed together was recommended, it's heavy and loamy so I have been trying to mix this with the lighter ericaceous to get better drainage. Do you have any tips on soil/ compost and have you experimented with blending?
After reading about proper pots for acers, I went with terracotta instead of glazed pots but forgot that terracotta is not frost resistant 🤦🏾♀️I guess that's not the right choice for UK weather?
@@marie-micheleramsamy5067 I’ve been using terracotta pots for years in the uk and have only had a couple be an issue. The benefit to the trees however is certain 👍

Hottest I’ve seen maple trees is 122 degrees in a poly tunnel. With no direct sun or wind they were doing well. Sounds like you have a great system 👍
While I do like your program, Great Britain "full sun" is like a gentle moist spring where I am. All my maples are in heavy afternoon shade.

Btw is Filigree, green filigree?

Hi may I know the size of these terracotta pots these maples are growing.
Sure most are around 28-30 cm 👍
Cant do this down here in Cornwall! The UV levels are way too intense plus the constant salt laden winds!
I’ve seen trees do well in Cornwall, I think the sun could work for most of them but the salt is an issue 👍

Hello from Long Island New York United States 👋 I have my first maple. It was on sale due to sun scorch. I hope it will be ok.
