    Good info Gents. Thank you. I’m in coastal So Cal, Zone 10B. The morning sun and shade in the late afternoon is key. The new leaves from a growth flush get toasted in the late afternoon sun. It’s going to be in the low 80’s today and tomorrow. From the mid 60’s last week.

    Zone 10a sw florida....full shade and 3x weekly watering in a terracotta pot seem to be working well. New growth and healthy foliage are all I can ask for in this experiment.

      Question, I’m just now trying to grow a Southern sugar maple sapling in SE Florida zone 10b. By full shade, how many hours of direct sunlight does that mean? Do you let the soil dry out before watering again?
      What do you think are my chances of success growing this tree where I live?

    I live in a mountain area of SE Australia. Whilst the heat is not as high as other parts of Australia, the UV of extreme for most summers days combined with low humidity makes it difficult to keep maples even though my are is equivalent zone 8. Hit summer winds are the real threat and can easily burn the leaves of a maple in a few hours.
    Mine are in pots so I can move them around the garden to either get sun or shade depending on time of year.

    Zone 10B California here. I can't grow some variety in open sun. I planted in locations that hide away from sun around 2:30 PM to sunset, and they are doing just fine at least up till now. During the summer some types of shading iterms/techniques are needed I guess.

    There’s some excellent advice to be had from this video. All of my Japanese Maples are in terracotta pots ranging from 10ltr to 450ltr volumes. Each pot has good drainage and decent compost blends to help the Acer settle-in and develop. I make sure that the compost feels damp and moist like a fruit cake. If the sunshine and heat is fierce. As it has been recently in the UK, I keep an eye on both how hot the clay pot feels and likewise how moist the compost feels to the touch. We have had two periods of extreme heat recently and it was a concern. Many have experienced leaf scotch but the Acers will get through this and hopefully next year the Summer period temperatures and heat will be “average “.

    • @tangofoxtrot40
      @tangofoxtrot40 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to see someone from UK replied to this. I’m fairly new ot Acers and i bought one last summer and the poor guy got aphids and then leaf scorch. It survived and is now starting to bloom. Moving forward, shall I just keep it indoor?

    • @Nicholas-db5sl
      @Nicholas-db5sl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tangofoxtrot40 I’d keep it outdoors as long as no frost. There are some anti aphid sprays on the market so look at those and see if it’s ok to use on JMs. I lost one JM to frost this Winter. But it’s sibling is now coming into bud and the colours are like jewels already!

    Just an fyi, I am in zone 10 in Southern California. They do very well here, but NEVER wet the leaves when watering. I’ve done six different varieties all did very well here.

    • @Gladysaur1
      @Gladysaur1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait, why can't you wet the leaves? I'm in LA and the freak thunderstorm last week (Wed- 6/22/21) hit my potted japanese maple tree. By sunday (6/26) I noticed so many of the young leaves curled, turned crispy, and brown. It was only the small leaves. Was it because the leaves got wet? I've been trying to figure out if it was caused by overwatering due to the rain, if its underwatered, or if the hot winds from the thunderstorm hurt the tree. Its really windy where I'm at, but Ive had the tree for 3 months now and this is the first time its happened. It is also shaded in the afternoon. Only gets the morning sun, so I think it might be the overwatering + wet leaves?

    • @cascooter
      @cascooter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gladysaur1 yeh it was probably the rain. I just planted a new maple about five months ago, it’s doing very well but I built a shade for it because it’s very hot and dry. It gets a few hours of sun in the early afternoon seems to love that. Water it from the bottom leaves never get wet and it still has a beautiful canopy. Keep watering your little twig and next year it will recover. Hopefully when you get rain again you will have good cloud cover and your maple won’t burn. Good luck.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dormancy can be tricky in hot zones. They do need a dormancy period to do their best. We typically recommend them in the us in zones 5-9 because in zone 10 they try to stay to active. I have had customers in Hawaii refrigerate bonsai in pots to achieve this. In the ground is hard as they tend randomly drop leaf for my customers in Miami and have a shorter lifespan for sure. I don’t know but I would experiment with trimming foliage on a smaller one strategically at first to see maybe
