    Oh my goodness Steph, I have just spent a wonderful morning in Antoinette’s gorgeous garden, it’s so beautiful. I’ve been thinking about getting a Japanese Maple so it’s been so wonderful seeing all the different types. I’m still as confused as ever wondering which to buy. Please thank her for sharing. It makes me smile that over in the US you call a half an acre garden a small garden! We have much smaller gardens over here. So lovely Steph ❤

      @@Thunderkitty0 thank you so much, I’m in the South East of England, about 30 miles west of London, probably around a zone 8 (although we don’t use the garden zones over here). I’m hoping to go plant shopping this weekend so will definitely have a look for some Japanese Maples, the spot I have in mind is my east facing border which gets sun for perhaps 6 hours in summertime, I’d like something either yellow tones or red, to break up the green I have on either side. Any suggestions welcome, I’d prefer something that doesn’t get too wide, more columnar. Thank you ♥️

    Thank you for sharing the garden tour. What a beautiful garden with many kinds of Japanese maple trees! I love ginkgo trees and peonies. I think Antionette may add some tree peonies which are even prettier than herbaceous peonies. I’m currently trying to collect Chinese and Japanese tree peonies. However, I had hard time finding tree peonies at our local nurseries 😢.(living around Lexington and Concord area)

      Thanks for this idea!!! I would love to add a tree peony. A friend of mine had one once and it was very cool. But she moved away. I’ll add it to my wish list. I don’t have any open spots now but I always manage to find a spot for a new plant somehow

    Loved everything you shared in Antoinette’s garden! It was lovely to hear your conversation. Thank you for showing so many varieties of Japanese Maples. I am such a fan. I also loved hearing Antoinette refer to cutting out areas of the grass to make room for more plants. My only question, how do you keep the lawn watered?? Wonderful video!

      Thank you so much for you comment! Watering the lawn is difficult these days. We were in such a drought last year. We have been getting some much needed rain recently. I suppose with less lawn, you would need to worry less about watering? Thanks again for you kind words.

      Hi Jan, Everywhere. Local nurseries, box stores, and even online. Some of the more common varities can be found locally, where more unique ones are ordered online. Mr. Maple is a good site to start looking as they specialize in JM's. I haven't ordered from them yet, so I can't speak to their trees. But they have many too look at and research. They also have a channel if you wanted to check it out.

    9:20 It is actually the male gingko tree you want and not the female - the fruits of the female unfortunately stink badly after they drop off the tree and rot in the fall.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carole, You can move it. Though at this point, I would wait until it cools off in fall. Try to get as much of the root ball as you can, and don't worry to much if you have to cut a few roots that are really attached. I've moved a couple and they do pretty well. Just keep it well watered, and provide it with some good compost mixed with your native soil wherever you plan to plant it. Hope this helps.

      I feel it would look lovely. Depending on your look it could serve as a focal point of beautiful color and different leaf texture.

    • @HookedandRooted
      @HookedandRooted  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it could work great! While they aren't native, some maple trees are so I think the foliage would work well. Just look for one that is hardy to your zone to ensure it makes it through. Depending on how much space you have the red varieties like bloodgood, and emperor 1 are pretty hardy zones 5-9. but of course if you have a protected location, where it wouldn't get too much harsh weather/wind, it may do best. Sort of in a micro climate in your garden. Hope this helps.

    • @Thunderkitty0
      @Thunderkitty0 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s awesome that you have a native style garden! If you’re worried a Japanese maple may not give the right effect… I wouod personally avoid crazy lime green chartreuse ones and red ones. Maybe a more natural looking gree n leaved one would fit in better.

    I was wondering if you or Antionette follow a regular preventative spraying on the Japanese Maples? I have only 3, and one that is just a few years old has aphids. I'm wondering if I should be spraying them or just leave them alone unless they have a problem. Thanks!

    • @Thunderkitty0
      @Thunderkitty0 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I’ve had certain years where aphids were much worse than others. In fact there was one year that I remember being outside in the evenings after my kids were in bed in March or April in the dark with a headlamp on. To remove aphids, I found the best method is to spray the plant with a sting stream of water from the garden hose. Luckily, most years the damage from them is barely noticeable. Goodluck!
