  • Thanks for checking out how I made this DIY Dog Treadmill / Carpet-mill for my Siberian Husky, Ghost. Ghost loves to run, I'm sure he would do it all day long if he could! However, when it comes to rain, he isn't the biggest fan. That's when I decided to try and make this treadmill for him so he can run inside during inclement weather. This was a fun afternoon project that can be done with basic hand tools. Make sure your dog only uses this under proper supervision, and make sure you train your dog to use it safely!
    Material list:
    Wooden 2x4's
    1/4" (smooth) plywood
    landscaping lumber
    4" PVP pipe
    Carpet
    Copper Pipe
    Thin metal wire
    Screws
    4 framing nails
    iHook
    Leash / rope with a clip
    OPTIONAL:
    Paint
    Wax

    You could also use Melamine for the top material which has a slick finish. No sanding, no waxing, already slick.

      Good Luck! Let me know how it goes! Definitely train your pup to be used to it, especially if they are scared! I started by just throwing treats on the treadmill so Ghost was comfortable around it. Eventually he started putting a paw on it to get a treat, and then was standing on it. Then I finally clipped him in and let him start to try and use it. Definitely do not rush this! It will be better for the pup in the long run!!

    Awesome build man, I got a Pitsky I just adopted from the pound and she has WAY more energy than me lol. So thank you for the video! My only suggestion (if you don’t already) is to get a set of 90° clamps, they changed my build quality 10 fold with having perfect squares screwed/nailed/glued together every time!

    Kind of funny with a build and no in-use shots.
    Whats really funny is my Sheltie took to my wife's electric treadmill when young.
    Can remember the 2nd time he was on it when I turned it up a bit and he took off on it. Got so into it that he started pooping and it looked like he was expelling little tootsie rolls that were hitting the belt and shooting away. Funny as hell, he's 10 now, and I should go out and find a used one on Craigslist.

    First let me say thank you for sharing. I would love to make this, unfortunately you weren't very clear on the rollers part. If the wood inside the pvc was screwed to the pvc, and was made immobile, how do the rollers roll? I am sorry, but I am just not sure how to fasten the rollers to the frame to allow them to roll that well. You showed screws in both sides, but those screws can't be the only thing holding the rollers in place, or they would thread themselves out.
    Please explain

    I’ve been using an electric mill for about 15-17 years with the various dogs I’ve had the pleasure to own. I had a carpet mill quite a while ago and in my experience most of my dogs didn’t run as well on it as they did with the electric. The carpet as you know only moves if the dog makes it move so I had to motivate them with their favorite toy or tug toy in front of them. Then they’d run for a minute or two. That’s why the electric has been my choice. You can set it to 2.0mph with about 3% incline they will jog for about 10-15 minutes and you can decrease their speed if they look tired or shorten their jog. You asked for requests for another build, would you build a slat mill? They are motor less like the carpet but they move quick with the rollers going all the down the surface they run on. You might already know what they are but if not you could research a little. Thanks and great job BYW on this build I hope your baby has a blast I know mine do take care

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284
      @thewoodworkinghusky3284  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for this! Yes electric would be 10000% easier for the dogs to move on, however was not in my budget. Slats could make for another interesting build, this is something I am definitely going to do some more research on. Thank you for the amazing feedback!!

    • @adamy1491
      @adamy1491 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your Siberian Husky will enjoy a slatmill. Just like the carpet mill it’s dog powered not motor powered but the slat mill can be real fast. Good luck with your research I look forward to the video if you end up making one. Thanks

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284
      @thewoodworkinghusky3284  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's great to hear! It took maybe 30-45 minutes between cutting all of the pieces and screwing them together. The use of a stop block made the bracing pieces super easy and super fast to cut the same size piece accurately. The longest part by far was sowing the carpet together to make it a longer piece (note to self: get a smaller dog, or a bigger carpet next time)

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284
      @thewoodworkinghusky3284  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I tried to make it pretty close to Ghost's dimensions. I came up with the calculations by:
      - 1.5x his width
      - His longest stride (got him while he was passed out on the couch) + 1 foot (although this added length might be different for much smaller/bigger dogs)
      - And I made sure that I made the harness strap support about 8" taller than he is!
      All in I think I spent about $60-70 on this, but I also had some things, in the garage already, + the cost of wood has gone up. I would say maybe 80-100 as a guess.
      Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284

      A *ROUGH* estimate (pun intended) would be about 15 ft. I got it at home depot, but it only came in 12' strips, so I needed to make it a little longer. You can calculate it by figuring out how long the platform is, multiply it by 2 (top and bottom), and same for the front and back, then add a foot or 2 for slack, the more slack, the easier it is to start the movement!

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284

      Give the carpet more slack (the tighter it is, the harder it is to start). Try using a wax paste or something to slick up the base a little bit. Make sure the rollers can spin, if there is too much friction, it won't be easy to move. I would also check the carpet to sefe if anything is getting stuck on it. Hope this helps!

      1) Get a dog (or a second.. or 5th... as many as you can.
      2) measure the dog (make sure the frame is long enough for his/her longest stride (i did 1.5x his stride for ghost)
      3) build the frame (leave room on the ends for the rollers, add support studs in the middle)
      4) attach plywood to the top of the base (not where the rollers will go). make sure to countersink the holes so the carpet wont grab onto anything
      5) make the rollers (pvc pipe + landscaping lumber)
      6) attach the rollers to the frame
      7) attach legs to the frame
      8) attach the carpet to the frame (sow the 2 ends together to create a loop)
      9) add the safety support to attach the dog with an old leash / rope with a clip
      10) add dog to treadmill
      Make sure to train the dog to use it though! Don't want the little guy/girl to be scared on it!

      I just got it at a local big box store. I really spent the time to go through and find the best pieces, with the least amount of bend, and knots/etc.

      I’m going to make this for my mini aussiedoodle! So it’ll be a small one and I’ll definitely let you know how it goes as I want it for my apartment. Thanks for sharing and being so detailed! Loved the vid! Did Ghost ever get less afraid of it or get much use out of it?

      Take a bit that is bigger than the head of the screw and drill a shallow hole (about the depth of the screw head). This is so the top of the screw will sit flush with top, creating a flat surface.

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284
      @thewoodworkinghusky3284  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for reaching out! I'm not quite sure what you mean, there isn't anything on the floor (except for the legs for the treadmill). The carpet is touching the floor because of the slack in it, but that's all. The carpet spins as the dog walks/runs on it, pushing the carpet backwards, and spinning along the rollers. I hope this helps!

      @@user-lp7ze2rk4u I used cheap carpet from a local hardware store, I just made sure it didn't have a rubber backing so the carpet would slide. It moves along 2 rollers, one at the top, and one at the bottom.

    Wonder if there is a way to build a dog treadmill without owning 10 grand worth of woodworking equipment. I have a hand saw and a few hammers.

  • @rickjames501
    @rickjames501 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm guessing it doesn't work because there is no video of your dog actually on it. Sorry if I'm wrong, but that was a huge oversight.

    • @thewoodworkinghusky3284
      @thewoodworkinghusky3284  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a fair point. I know there are other videos out there of similar builds that show the concept of what I did. I was just excited to get this out there, and Ghost was not really into it yet. Huskies are notorious for being stubborn, and can be hard to train to do things. This was no different, so I decided to try and put this out before trying to get a clip of him running on it. He still prefers to run outside, but he can be coerced to use this with treats... Lots of them!

    • @jefferydbzcoo

      No these move fine. A dog that's not trained to run on a carpet mill usually won't.

      Does the carpet not move at all? Did you leave slack in it? If it is too tight it is extremely difficult to move

      It's true that I didn't use basic hand tools for this, but its easily replaceable and the same cuts can be made with them. Jig saw instead of a bandsaw, or a hand saw instead of a jig saw. There's always another way!
