Hey Alek, quick tip with cutting nylon one of my mentors taught me a way back: use HSS instead of carbide. preferably a duller/radiused bit. just manage the heat and it'll be cutting much smoother

    • @MawoDuffer

Hence why you have to "manage the heat" because a dull cutting tool will cause a lot or friction. This is not exactly the same but think about side clearance and rake angles when cutting aluminium or copper compared to cutting something a lot harder like stainless steel.

Alec, while the runout you ended up with on the nylon wheels is probably fine for a dog treadmill, another method you could have used to turn them down would be to mount them in the lathe on an axle using the installed bearings. That way, the turned edge of the wheel would be concentric with the axle and bearings. You would need to use a lathe dog (or similar) however to keep the wheel rotating with the axle instead of spinning on the bearings.

Your current set-up should work, but will require both axles to be exactly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the frame. No pressure!

If you have a wheel you want to turn, just machine a boss for the bearing, with a threaded hole on the end, put the wheel on the shaft, and tighten a cup that sits on the wheel's wall. You can use a holesaw for the cup. This also helps with stringing, since you can cut thicker cuts and make it easier, even without using the proper plastic tooth.

I was just few days ago searching the interwebs to some plans for dog treadmill, and I cannot believe that you are making one.
I also have a malinois and during the winter we can't really go outside every day because it's very very cold, I think I'm gonna be doing this treadmill for her,
    Thanks Alec

Metal will usually shrink down the middle of the weld joint. So adding a super thin shim or two in between your blocks and letting it cool while clamped should get you the results you are looking for. Preheating the whole area that you are welding is another way to help.

If you manufacture "soft jaws" for the lathe out of a softer metal you can just cut the jaws with a normal tool to make it perfectly hold your part. It's how these precise holds are done at volume.

Breaking chips: just plunge groove every 10mm, then feeding across the diameter, the chips will disconnect at the grooves

Machining nylon is fun. Use a sharp hook with a long handle to grab bits of the swarf and pull it away to break. Cut from inside to outside. Compound moves away from work piece.

Alec, when you've got your bars tacked at 200mm gap, tack some bits of steel across at both ends, tack your second upright bar then weld it, cut the bars off when all is cooled.
Then for second frame just clamp it all down to the first frame and tack it up and weld

    • @joernforbest693

Also an good idea. Heating it on the opposite side of the weld with an oxy-propane torch would work as well.

@@richardmillhousenixon You are right but only if you hold it to long at one point. I´m using this method daily at my job and from experience you have to drag the torch roughly twice as fast as the welding gun. If you do it wrong the carbon in the steel burns of an the steel starts melting.

@@joernforbest693 If the metal gets yellow hot, it will warp quite significantly when cooling. A MAPP torch is quite good at getting somewhat thin metal to a dull cherry red without too much risk of overheating it

This project reminds me of a fun history fact. In the 18th century there was a dog specifically breed for turning meat over a fire, it was called a Turnspit dog and walked on basically a treadmill or big hamster wheel that was connected to a mechanical rotisserie, aka spit roasting.
