Hi there, could you do a detailed overview on the swing out build, and it’s build process. Keep up the great content on Instagram and here on TH-cam I love the first gen content
It's a nice setup while you're young. Now that I'm in my 60s and about to retire and travel the country I think I'll go with a full size truck with an 8 foot bed and a cap with a higher roofline. 30 years ago a small truck would have been all I wanted but now I want more space and comfort.
How do you secure your tailgate. I see the shell having a little lock but when you go to the city how do you prevent people from simply opening it and taking all the stuff?
I'd say it was faster than setting up a roof top tent, and was less work haha. We set up our roof top tent with two people and it still took a good 4-5 minutes to get it ready to sleep in.
Overland Under Budget but now with the van I can pull into camp and crawl into the bed and go to sleep right away. I don’t even have to get out of the van lol
So there is no way to close or open the swing gate once hopping in the bed? The gate would have to be left open because otherwise the rear glass would hit the tire if closed. Or is there enough room that the glass does clear the window? Appreciate it
Very relieved to find this video as I am debating between a SB or an LB. You're clearly taller than me (I'm 5'1") and seem to fit just fine in the SB with cap. Are you able to stretch out all the way or are you just a fetal position sleeper? Thanks for showing off your setup! :)
I was in the same boat. I called every topper place in the greater Denver area since there was nothing within a thousand miles to buy used and it had to be custom ordered. I got side windows that open both with the sliding window and pop up like the rear. Cost me $3,500. Ouch. If you can't find used, you'll have to go to a topper place and have them order one to be made for you unless some places have them just sitting on the lot (every place I called pretty much laughed at the possibility of that)
I mentioned this in another comment here but I called every topper dealer in the greater Denver area (only used ones were different color and at least a thousand miles away). The shops all said they aren't made anymore unless you order one. I got the upgraded side windows that slide open and pop up like the rear window does. Cost me $3,500 and took like a month to get
I’m pretty tall. Just recently got a short bed Tacoma and I wonder if there’s a way to replace or rig the back truck window so the whole thing can come down then. Raising the bed high enough with a foot platform so my feet can hang into the truck cabin
Greetings from Argentina, l have a Toyota Hilux, very similar features than the Tacoma short bed, l´m 6,1 and will try fitting diagonally, do you think l would?
I had a rooftop tent it's to much weight and your to vulnerable. I had no choice but to get rid of it. Times are getting tougher and all the creeps and predators are coming out the wood works. I had far to many instances where people in cars or trucks would come and doing burn outs next to me bumping music shining there high beams right at my tent. I almost shot a few people.
You referring to the camper shell/topper? If so, I tried my best to find one (used ones were all 1,000+ miles away and some where clearly scams) and all the shops I called said they aren't made anymore so they aren't on lots. Has to be custom made. I upgraded my side windows to be sliding and pop open like the rear. Cost $3,500
"Faster than any roof-top tent"? Sorry kid, not even close! I take it you've never seen Australia's 'Drifta', or South Africa's 'Alu-cab' roof-top tents? The gas-strut-flip-open model from either company can be deployed with the bed already made in about 5 seconds.
Micah, can you please rebuild the sleeping platform or make a video of adding more hinges and go over the dimensions etc?
1. Your videos are awesome 2. Can you do a video on that switch board you have in the corner of the canopy? Keep it up please!
Great video and fresh perspective on this industry! Always enjoy watching!
Thanks Marcus, I really appreciate it.
You have a link for that sleeping pad?
I dig the fold out plywood platform
Did you make it ?
Nice ! I haven’t seen a shortbed setup like this 👌🏽
glad see another ur video thanks for ur effort
Thanks Jose! I'm starting to get the hang of it. I think ill be making a lot more soon. Anything you want to see?

Hey Colby! Sounds like a plan, I'll and get that filmed this week.

I would 100% agree with that! were starting to out grow it already!
Where did you get the mattress pad ? Thanks .
You could get a handheld vacuum and a large vacuum bag to get more space with the mattress topper!
Love the truck..... and setup. 😉👍🏻
That's pretty cool setup. Nice man!
Thank you !
Can you make a video of how you did all this lol I want something like this is my short bed Tacoma
Great set up , looking for Tacoma ideas as I'm getting a Tacoma in a month and looking for ideas , so I'll subscribe and be following
Glad to see I can camp in my shortbed!
@@Jose-im3ki how tall are you?
This is a nice setup. Im 6 ft do you think i can fit diagonally in my Tacoma shortbed?
You might be able to squeez in there but its going to be tight
Thanks for sharing this! Have you tried 2 people in the 5ft bed? how'd it feel?
I am 6'2" and I barely fit diagonally and my head has to be on the tail gate end. Works in a pinch, but I wouldn't say great for me.
I was wondering abt that . 5ft bed
I’m 5 10 ?

Colors in that camera are great. What camera is that?

Ok good to know! Definitely, a comforting feeling knowing you get into a comfortable bed quickly after a long day.
Overland Under Budget but now with the van I can pull into camp and crawl into the bed and go to sleep right away. I don’t even have to get out of the van lol
Ha that is the mega advantage of a van!
@@CholulaDaddy yes. I have this same truck with a cvt tent and set up is a lot more work than my pop top van.
@4:12 you hear something crazy outside could be someone "locks" the tire rack back in?
The panel you have in the corner. Whats that made of?
You got Marv in your truck lmao
Nice build! What type of roof lights and charging outlet are you using?
What’s the link to that pad?
Any issues with not having a support in the middle? Or any thought of some kind of support in the middle?
Dope set up ✅
love it, man...thanks for the excellent ideas...
Glad you like them!
Just need ac and mozzy net and you are good to go
nice set up!
How do you close and open the rear tire carrier from inside the truck bed?
So there is no way to close or open the swing gate once hopping in the bed? The gate would have to be left open because otherwise the rear glass would hit the tire if closed. Or is there enough room that the glass does clear the window? Appreciate it
Also... Harbor Freight Transfer pump for $10. Instant running water.
Cool. How'd you make it. I have a 5ft bed with a shell ordered.
How did you hook up your hinges To hold like that Can you send a picture

You'll be just fine in a SB if you're 5'1". I'm jealous lol
Great video
Got a link for that camper shell you're running? I'm having real difficulty finding anything specific for a 1st gen 4dr tacoma these days.

Can you do a stealth camper build on a 1992 HiLux?
Probably
This is awesome
thanks for the video love it.
Hey brother I’ve been looking for a camper like this for my 02 double cab. What’s the make and model number on your shell?

What kind of wood are you using is it 1 inch in height

Check out the foot extension idea at bambeds.com.
This is amazing! I'm wondering if two person can fit sleeping that way? Thank you very much!
oh well not to medium sized adults without opening the hatch and sticking the feet out. But my son and i camped in this setup until he was 3yrs old.
@@OverlandUnderBudget thank you very much! Amazing, making great memories with your son!
What’s the brand of the bed topper
Greetings from Argentina, l have a Toyota Hilux, very similar features than the Tacoma short bed, l´m 6,1 and will try fitting diagonally, do you think l would?
Hello! Man i think you will be very close, but you might be able to make it work with the right truck cap!
Hi! Have you had any problems with water coming into the bed? I am currently troubleshooting my 1st gen.
Yes! haha i used some window caulking to help but yes its not 100% perfect.
How tall are you and how long is the bed?
You did not explain what the bed platform was .
I do have a separate video on it 👍🏻
How tall are you? Can you fit comfortably in it?
Do you lay diagonal??
Whats the mattress size

where did you get the bed canopy?

What part of SLO county is this?
How did you do the power outlets in the canopy?
Just some heavy gauge wire from the battery to a fuse block in the camper then run your accessories off of that
@@OverlandUnderBudget do you have a video on your power station build and how tall are to sleep diagonally.?
How do you close the spare tire after you are inside??
A lasso
6'3 signing out 😐😔
What bumper is that
Custom made - in one of his other videos
Future vids you should block or remove license plate
I’ve often seen this done. And I’ve often seen it not done. What is the main reason for this. Easy to say security. But from what?
Is that the 5foot bed?
Great content ... Alot of overland gear is just overpriced and over rated...
his dirty shoes on the fresh bed just made it worse.. idk how people do that and think its hygienic???

The wind affects aren't really needed.
haha i agree i should left those out : )

@@OverlandUnderBudget I like your videos but you really need a deadcat.
come on man you cannot fit there
