    Ok... this may be the single dumbest $400 tool I have ever seen. I love how their "cost comparison" shows that now you won't need that $150 impact gun but makes no mention of the cost of the required 29-gallon minimum 3 CFM "minimum" @ 120 PSI air compressor. Those die grinders suck a lot of air. 1-hour battery life on the camera? One of the advantages of removing the blade to sharpen is it allows you to clean and rebalance the blade and scrape the deck at the same time. It also allows you to cycle through several sets of blades which extends the life of all of your blades. Best recommendation - save the box. :-)

I don't know about you but I think I could have swapped a set of blades and sharpened the spare set in a lot less time than it took them to get everything hooked up, adjusted, connected, booted and then sharpen.

    Stan the one thing I see off the bat is if the blade isn't removed it can rust itself to the mower arbor on the deck every time I sharpen my blade I clean the entire blade to make sure it is perfectly balanced to prolong the arbor bearing life and reduce vibration to next to 0

    Hey Stanley, I've been sharpening and balancing my blades since about 1968. I have one machine I bought new in 1985 a poulan model x14v38A that has been balanced with every sharpening and the mandrels greased at every use. One mandrel had to be replaced due to a piece of iron I hit in 2012, I replaced the othern at the same time...Now I have a decent spare mandrel. I bought a used Husky Gt in 2015 that was 2 yrs old and the mandrels were raggedy as a hotel mop and the blades were out of balance when I bought it. Replaced mandrels, sharpened, balanced, hardened and tempered a set of new blades and the new mandrels are still good and tight. These little tractors mow 6 acres a week. Hmmm, I cain't argue with my program but for each their own I reckon! I do love that camera rig though. God Bless, Kev

    If you start out with a new blade that is balanced and sharpen it properly, removing the same amount of material from each cutting edge, I could see where you could get away without balancing it. I always check the balance on my blades after sharpening but rarely find them to be out of balance.

    This is a great tool. I've never sharpened a lawn mower blade myself, but this looks very cool. Will it work for push mowers as well? For guys who can't afford to buy it(me) I wonder if the same type of barrell grinder on a Dremel and doing it by hand would work?? Thanks Stan and Dan for sharing your thoughts and videos, Rodney

    I have started to see this thing a couple times now. I think by the time I find a flat place to roll it and get set up I could have had both blades out with a impact and started sharpening. Sorry Im not sold. How long is that little grinding wheel going to last? Probably not as long as my disc. I dont balance much but I do check if its close its good.

    Thing to bear in mind is that the main reason it is taking SOOOO long is they are learning about using and setting it up - with practice it would take a few sec's as height, etc, would already be set.
    RE: the compressor/tank, etc - if you don't have them, tool isn't for you, simple.
    One of the bigger issues, that I can see, is the stone wear - be interested to see how a carbide burr would work and service life.
    Personally, I could see that as being useful for a quick touch up at the end of the day/week, for some, but by no means everyone (including myself) - and that is fine.

      @@christapherdane You dont want "razor sharp" blades when mowing, you need a decently sharp edge with enough angle and material behind it to make sure the edge stays longer and cuts more consistently. The sharper, the hotter and the more material you take off these blades the more time you'll spend taking sharpening them and will equate to a shitty cut or the blade edge disappearing within 2 weeks of commercial use which is nfg. I've been in the business for over 10 years and I currently own a good sized fleet of commercial mowers which include: (5) stand up 52" john deere quick traks, (7), 60" Toro 6000 series mowers, (2) 52" Torograndstands (3) Ferris Z3X stand up mowers, two of them are 61" ones 52" and I have 3 more 61" ones on the way (2) 36" hydro great Dane walk behind mowers, 10 commercial pushmowers ranging in size from 21"-30" and that's just my commercial ztrs used for turf grass that's not including the boom mowers, brush cutters and Bush hogs. With all the years experience i have I know for a fact that I'm pretty close to an expert on large and small property maintenance, landscapes/hardscapes, turf care, cut quality and how to sharpen and balance blades with my eyes shut using a proper blade sharpener. So before you try to defend such a useless product actually do research and be sure that you're qualified or have the knowledge to argue about such product.

  • @eriklindbergs5017
    @eriklindbergs5017 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    25:20 Stan, you don't crawl under the mower to remove the blades. you drop the deck and disconnect it. Extract the deck, then remove the blades. With a little practise it is possible to get the deck out and blades off in about 2 minutes. Another 2min to sharpen, 1min per blade to balance and 3 min to put everything back. so for a 3 blade deck your at about 8min. The reason you balance the blades is to prevent the blade vibrating (even if you can't feel it), this type of periodic oscillation will cause a huge amount of extra wear of the bearings of the blade shafts. Wear those out and depending on the machine you could be out a couple of days trying to fix it or in some of the cheaper ones you'll need to replace the entire deck and blade drivetrain because of the way the bearings are seated will crack the deck if you try to extract them. (been there, not a fun time.)

      I just pull the spark plug caps, lift the front of the mower and chock the wheels. Never had a problem. Pain in the ass to have to remove all that unless you need to. If the plug caps aren't in, the mower can't cut on and the blade clutch can't engage.

  • @huckbeduck
    @huckbeduck 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It just seems like a best practice sort of thing to make sure your blades are balanced. Those little harmonic vibrations probably cause other components of the equipment to wear faster. Also the discharge blade always wears the fastest, and needs to be swapped with the least worn blade. With those tiny little wheels of that sharpener, you have to have perfectly smooth concrete to roll it around on.

    in short blades you will not need to balance if so every five years. 22" and longer may be every two years. My blades lasted 12 years no problem. The lawn mower died first.

      NoraCore has another new tool coming out for adjusting spark plugs. Instead of wasting time removing the plug and setting the gap with a feeler gauge, they have a new fiber optic tool that goes up through the exhaust pipe and up through the exhaust valve and allows you to robotically adjust the gap from INSIDE the cylinder. It will revolutionize the small engine repair business.

    Sure, no problem, skip balancing the blades. But, when your spindle bearings seize, and you have a downed machine and have to shell out a lot of money cause of laziness and stupidity, you might want to keep balancing your blades. Besides, how many lawn care companies have a compressor big enough to handle the psi and cfm for this gimmick? 🤔🤔🤔

    I believe that's a waste of time and money. Ill keep doing it the old fashioned way. I always like to balance my blades each time I sharpen them plus it's a good time to do other maintenance while the blades are off.

    Sadly, this system seems great, BUT... you also need to ballance the blades!
    It looks real easy to use and gives great results, but the blades still have to come off for ballancing... Or kill the Bearings in your Mandrells!
    Just my $0.02 (two cents worth) of criticism. (SORRY...😿)

      @James Michael that is true. In my business I rarely need to balance my blades. I take them off to Sharpe but 99% of the time they need no balancing. Like you said, take the same off both side. If I need 5 passes on one side to get it sharp then I do 5 on the other end. And they stay balanced just fine

    Gimmick it is a tich off. To many variables to getting set up. Looks like the surface you have to work on has to be very smooth and level. And the small grinding stone will not last long at all. It is a good idea but is seems easier just to remove the blades. Air grinder take allot of CFM to run properly. If you have a 20gal compressor and a nice garage floor maybe. Just won't ork for me.

      Notice too they never showed trying to sharpen the far side blade. If you think the blade on the discharge side was tough with two guys holding flashlights, imagine working in the dark using only the camera on the opposite side (or middle). :-)

    NO way Jose, that is worthless. Blades off, inspect deck, inspect the blades, clean, sharpen, BALANCE and reinstall. Thats the way it should be done. Yea, taking them off is a pain, but so is having to pay taxes. Most factory blades are ground to 15 degrees...
