  • Today we're doing a quick video on a requested topic, which is how to sharpen a lawn mower blade with an angle grinder. Thankfully we we're building our new setup to do such a thing at our storage locker, so here ya go!
    Sharpening a lawn mower blade is very simple to do, you want to make sure you get the right angle and have the right tools, that's it! We use a battery powered angle grinder, a small balancing cone, and you're good to go. Fresh lawn mower blades ready to cut a beautiful lawn.
    Which technique do you guys use to sharpen lawn mower blades? Do you use a flap disc, or a grinder disc? The one we used was a 40grit flap disc in this video, I'll try to leave a link below.

      I put them flat in my vise and use the angle grinder with a flap disc. First pass under, one to two passes on top and a little clean up under pass to finish. Sharpness test is if it easily peels a fingernail

    8 years ago i taught my son lawncare/landscaping. last month he came home and taught me to sharpen blades with a flap disk. A Polish friend of mine saw the all american sharpener and said he can duplicate it. I bought that prototype off him and call it the "all polish sharpener". Kinda funny how it all works. I don't think I would be who I am without all the great people around me

    Ok thanks for the tip, for years I’ve been paying to have my blades sharpened, went out and bought an angle grinder and balancer, took me all of ten min and my blades stay straight unlike the place that was sharpening for me kept destroying my blades, rounding corners and take a quarter off the width at a time! Much better now

    i always thought i was pretty good at sharpening blades with a grinder (when i was using a grinder- i had better luck using a grinding wheel over using a flap disc.) but i HIGHLY recommend getting an actual blade sharpener. no matter how good you think you are at getting that 30degree angle with a regular grinder, your not. and its way faster using an actual sharpener. get the rbg 712 OR the all american blade sharpener- you still use a grinder using this device. i use this if i have to sharpen a blade out on my route (it can be used mobile) i use the rbg in my shop. the all american sharpener takes a second to get set up the first couple times of using it, but once you get it dialed its an excellent unit. i also reccomend changing the grinding wheels every few blades you sharpen depending on how much the blades need to be sharpened (when using the all american sharpener)

    Trick for balnacing blades when you don't have a balancer handy. Put a nail in a vertical piece of material and hang it from that. The heavy side will fall. It's not perfect, but it will get you very close.

    Out of the list of tools where it would be a really good idea to use some safety gear like gloves or a face shield, this would be one of them. Got the ear protection at least. Oh well, your body, your choice. I can’t say I don’t prefer going raw dog while grinding with my tool as well.
    Also funny, we got people that rip on others for not wearing a mask out in public but then go home and start grinding metal and sanding wood, lacquering floors etc with no protection whatsoever, lol…

    You can get away with doing it this way but you're definitely changing the angle a bit.

      Yup. That’s why the All American sharpener is a solid crutch. Or a more expensive option like the RBG712, then again that’s also $600+.

    Yeah, but how to sharpen when the blade has a slight curve to it?

      Yes but not a truly useful tool. Get a dedicated grinder.

    • @keithgibbons195
      @keithgibbons195 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is dedicated grinder mounted on yellow hornet witch has the correct 30% angle. I sharpened 5 sets off blades with it last week. I called it yellow jacket by mistake it is A yellow hornet . I have a grinder with 40 grit flap mounted on it .

    Pretty disappointed in how chewed up my new Ballard blades were in only like 5 hours of mowing

    Never, and I mean never, use something as uncontrollable as an angle grinder to take the burr off the flat side of a blade. You should be doing that very carefully with a flat file. Can't get your flat side back and it's 50% (and the other edge being the other 50%) of what makes up a good cutting angle.

    "That angle is everything..."
    No. No, it's not.
    It's not the space shuttle. It's a lawn mower.
    Go at it carefully with your angle grinder and flap disk.
    Try to maintain something reasonably close to the factory bevel.
    Get a nice edge on it, and make sure it's balanced.
    If the angle of the bevel isn't perfect, your grass won't care.

      Not true at all. While it’s not the space shuttle, there’s a lot to plant and turf health care. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, which is obvious, then I’d not offer your two cents on what a professional knows.

      Most grass gets cut with dull blades. If you sharpen yours frequently, good on you. The homeowner who sharpens his blades regularly will have a healthier lawn than the guy who sharpens them once a year, even if the angle isn't exact. The best advice to the homeowner is, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Maintain your equipment and don't sweat the small stuff.

    Well you know you will always have one guy chiming in telling you your doing it wrong. Well here ya go. I have sharpened for years and not just mower blades but anything that cuts made out of metal. I owned a business doing it. So I have a RBG 712 and All American sharpener. Your sparks are flying the wrong way my friend. So I see someone also commented Country Side also did a video using his RBG. If you watch it check out which way the sparks are flying. Toward the blade VS yours flying away from the blade. Your sending the burr toward the edge. He is sending the burr toward the inside of the blade which is correct. At least your header does not say correctly. But hey if its sharp go with it.

    Blades are never supposed to be super sharp, new blades are never sharp, and never go near the underside.

  • @robertmceuen3630
    @robertmceuen3630 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bad! No balancer? Bad! Never sharpen if you're not gonna balance the blade right then.

    I just watched the idiot at next level diy channel say the correct way is to use a file. LOL !! And An angle grinder will destroy your blade.

  • @leslieframer4068
    @leslieframer4068 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a screwed up blade first you always use a stone disc grind towards the blade at set angle and grind off enough metal to re straighten the edge and get the back side flat again never grind the back his blades look shiny and pretty but I can see the angle flaws and they'll dull in the first use.. thanks but most homeowners etc can't tell oh also us something with a set angle or clamp temporarly guide to blade and grind until angle is uniform.

    yeah try to do that on a mulching blade with curve that is a real test of how good you are???!!!!!
    for me i am struggling to sharpen a mulching blade with curves and I have NOT found anyone that builds a jig for a curvy blade; i have to do some brain thinking to come up with my own
    sharpen a straight blade is a piece of cake. easy peasy especially with a jig!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
